This week marked 30 years since the great Freddie Mercury passed away. We've just spent the evening watching various programmes about Freddie and Queen. He's one of the only artists I'd like to go back in time to see (Freddie, Buddy Holly and Bob Marley are on my "if I had a time machine" list).

Just watching the programmes and listening to the other members of the band and Freddie's friends/family, a few things struck me

1) How absolutely fucking amazing his voice and stage presence was

2) How absolutely fucking awful the press was at the time - as bad as it is now?

3) How absolutely fucking disgusting many "mainstream" commentators were at the time, about gay people and the link between so-called debauchery and HIV/AIDS (contemporary politicians condemning gay men on newsreel etc)

Anyway, there's my little mind-fart for today. I'm off to listen to more Queen

I feel very old as I remember watching Queen at Live Aid like it was yesterday. Where the heck has the last 30 years gone!?

In the middle

A legend for sure, the part where they showed them making Days of our lives made me tear up tbh, I think by then we all knew he was reaching the end as he looked so unwell

Long live The Queen

Watching the “legendary 1975 concert” on bbc2 now

What a performer he was! Absolutely gutted that he died before I was born but I was brought up listening to Queen and Freddie’s solo stuff

Closest I’ve seen was clips on YouTube, pretty sure the entire performance wasn’t recorded? Could be wrong though

I'm sure it was on TV over 2days and recorded in full and available to buy on video. Correct me if I am mistaken.

“ When organiser Bob Geldof was persuading artists to take part in the concert, he promised them that it would be a one-off event, never to be seen again. That was the reason why the concert was never recorded in its complete original form, and only secondary television broadcasts were recorded.”

But MTV etc kept all their recordings so guess that’s where the video come from

It wasn’t recorded, all live starting in UK and ending in US, a long but very enjoyable day in front of the TV which wasn’t normal in our house.

Phil Collins performed in both stadiums live.

Two dates but one continuous day. Started around lunchtime in the UK and finished around 3/4 in the morning (UK time) when the US arena closed.

I also remember how it was mentioned that no one was phoning to donate. Then the minute Queen came on stage, the phones were ringing off the hook. Incredible just how much influence they had over people x

A great showman on stage, I could watch him all day ! He certainly did something to me the way he moved around. A huge loss when he died. I still love their songs as much now, if not more

I had the privilage to work as part of a security team at the 1977 Earls Court concert & we all had an invite to the final backstage party. spoke to him very briefly, but what a fantasic down to earth guy he really was.

Worthing

Brilliant frontman and brilliant band. Followed their career since the Bohemian Rhapsody years. Another sad fact is that the Kiss drummer Eric Carr passed away on the same day as Freddie.
