m dad lived here for most of his life and we still had to go to paper shop with him as his irish accent was very thick and most couldn't understand him xxx

I spent a lot of time as a child with my grandad who spoke 'Mill', i.e. very broad Lancashire.

When I went to Grammar School it was drummed out of me as it wasn't considered very 'ladylike'

When I'm angry I'm as broad as my Grandad was and no one can understand me and that is over 40 years ago

It's an interesting post as some people like your goodself never quite lose their accent completely and yet some people do lose it and adopt a more cosmopolitan accent and you would never relise where they originaly come from.

My mum moved to England from Scotland in the 1960s and still has a Scottish accent (albeit a much gentler one). I had a broad Scottish accent back then but being only 6, I soon lost it when I went to school

I have lived up north for 8 years and have only soften my southern accent over the last couple of years.

It causes great fun to my friends when i pronounce thing the locals say like canny, mackems and toon as they just come out sounding so wrong.

I've pretty much lost my accent, I've been in Manchester 8 years now and most people say I sound like a posh northerner

So that's what you get when you cross manc with Norfolk lol

There's still plenty of words I say with a Southen accent though like glass, grass, bath etc..

My friends all find it very amusing when I've had one too many though!

I have loved in soton for over 5 yrs now. My step dad 25yrs. We are both Scottish. Neither of us will loose our accent. Where his is still as broad as was (for every day listening, I guess it will of dulled a bit), my accent has mellowed a little. Thanks to working on customer services, I had to slow down my speech a little, so ignorant gits on the phone would stop annoying me n I hanging up - there is no need for the attitude off some folks out there. We used to always say 'the customer is always right - till PROVEN wrong!!'.... N all too often their ignorance beggered belief.

My friends al know though if I have been speaking to family up the road lol.xx

I worked hard at correcting mine, at the advice of my EFL teacher when I arrived on these shores over 30 years ago to study, in order to get better jobs and have good social standing etc., as was the teachings in those days.

I'm originally from luton but moved to the north east when i was 11 and also lived in scotland and my family are scots so my accent varies between the three, my stepdad will be here all weekend and has a durham accent so needless to say i'll slip into the accent too, the do say variety is the spice of life

Unless you move fairly early on in your childhood you tend to keep the accent you develop but by the time you're six, it trends to stick. It'll soften over time, but 5 minutes back home and you're talking like a native

I tend to be a sponge and pick up local slang or at least I picked up Scotish slang and now can't lose it even after two years living in England

I'm American by birth and lived there 25 years. Most people still immediately know I'm American as soon as I open my mouth. Perhaps that's cause I'm do lippy as some say But I have been mistaken for Irish, Australian,Scotish and even French

I've lived in various places, but only in the South East and London.

The way I speak depends to an extent on to whom I'm speaking and how I wish to be perceived. There are times when sounding well spoken is a benefit and times when being taken for "posh" is not a good thing. It also depends in part upon how lazy I am being. I also, sometimes, unintentionally, acquire a little of the accent of another person, if I'm in their company for a while.

I never really acquired the accent of my birthplace, even though it's quite strong and is prevalent there. Most people are unable to tell where I was born and grew up from speaking to me. I develop the accent very slightly when I am back there, but not very noticeably.

Of the few people who have identified where I grew up, most have said it's more the rhythm of how I speak and the phraseology that gave it away, rather than the accent.

I'm Yorkshire born and bred and extremely proud of it. Moved away in 1974 to join the RAF and lived away ever since. Still got my Yorkshire accent thank goodness! Even living dahn sarf in Essex hasn't tempered it.

Few years ago me & the missus went on a Greyhound bus across the Southern States of USA, and the amount of times I was accused of being either Australian or Irish by the Yanks was unreal!! They haven't a clue on some things! haha

Last time we were in america we were looking for a particular restaurant and i stopped an american guy who was passing by for directions asking ' can you tell us where the xxxxx restaurant is please ?' His reply .. ' sorry im english ! ' unbelieveable !

I lived in Liverpool from age of two until I was in my early 20's. After A few years in the forces and a fairly nomadic life ever since I have no recogniseable accent, most people can detect that I am from up north somewhere but are suprised when I tell them where from.

I like to think that my London accent is not as strong as it once was. I left London 15 years ago and it is definately softer, however, one weekend back home with my mates and it is as strong as ever!!!
