I don’t want this thread to descend into chaos, but what a harrowing story about the brutal stabbing of a 12 year old in Liverpool leading to the arrest of four boys aged between 13 and 15.

With stories like this, the recent murders in Somerset allegedly over parking and general rise in extreme violence in our streets and communities, what can be done? Where did our communities go wrong and is there any way back?

I think that these situations are separate to the extremism and radicalisation issues we face so I have tried to differentiate them.

I don’t even know what I intended with this post, I just felt the urge to put something down.

Lack of good role models

Hamstrung education system

Hamstrung justice system (police & courts)

Gang culture

Entitlement attitude

Hedonistic society

They will never be totally safe, but there's a lot of room for improvement.

Murders involving kids as perpetrators is shocking but it happens. When I was young there were a few kids I could imagine actually capable of murder. When I see same age youngsters now I think hope their not as violent as my generation were.

But living with a child social worker not much shocks us really. Sad but true.

What are the statistics on crimes like these? On violent crimes, knife crime etc? Have they been going up recently? Or is the media just reporting on them more

Gang and knife related crime has been a big issue in cities for a long time. I remember some good progress was made, especially with knife crime, what happened to that progress?

Too many highly influential music artists glamourising gang culture, too many violent video games, not enough guidance/care/discipline by parents and schools, the justice system is a complete joke and without wanting to sound racist there's a lot of people in the UK now that have different views on the importance of life and death and treat violence and murders as "normal". Unfortunately things are not going to get any better going forward I fear for the future generations!

It's a worry culture around young people with violence and knifes. Both amongst young males and females. Something I see that's affects and worries the teenages (male and female) in my life. It's very much a reality of modern youth, especially in certain environments. Maybe there's a little more attention when it's a female but there there are stabbing and vicious assaults daly. Resulting in death or very close calls. Normally young males at the hands of young males. There is a risk that we lose focus on the problems of widespread and general street violence amongst youths if we try and push the narrative towards the safer streets for women moment over the wider issues of street violence in this particular case. Although a very valid and important movement this case seems to me more a case of generic street violence from confrontation than a specific misogynistic motivated attack.

Very sad, thoughts are with her family and with the families of any other victims of senseless violence.

A bit of perspective though, its not a new phenomenon.

I'm not familiar with the figures and statistics, but we're always led to believe 'things are getting much, much worse' by the media.

Horrible crimes like this have always been with us and always will be. You can't legislate against free will and the darker side of human nature.

Even when there was the threat of the death penalty things like this used to happen.

Personally I think it would help if it was legal to carry something to defend yourself with like pepper spray. Women especially.

I’m not familiar with that case. I’ll have to go and have a read into it. Issues around gender based violence are rightly starting to get the coverage they deserve but so much more needs to be done

I think granting others to carry weapons makes the issue worse. How many people are gonna get pepper sprayed on a night out in “self defence”. How many useless court cases and police time will have to be put forward for policing that?

Arming people isn’t the answer, education and guidance of younger people is. Why are so many young men turning to gangs and violence? Why do they feel the need to carry knives and kill people over a small disagreement?

I wonder if we are becoming more violent, in part to the constant exposure to violence and the numbing effect as well as the accessibility of violence with phones, social media, Snapchat etc

They've been trying to educate the youth for decades, its not helping.

Also, its currently illegal to carry anything to defend yourself but people are still being assaulted with pepper spray, tasers, knives and guns on a daily basis.

Plus, if two people got into an argument and someone did got sprayed, it likely isn't going to end with one party lying on the flow bleeding out of a hole in them.

I have to totally disagree with the statement about violent video games. Ive played many myself, and as a gamer i know for a fact that the vast majority of ppl who play them are far from violent in nature. If video games were partly responsible then so would films and tv shows.

The real issue lies with a lack of proper parenting, community relations, the awful education system.

There was violence, even caused by children, long before video games were even a thing. The only reason theres more violence now is that there are more ppl alive, more problems caused by a lack of proper parenting and community relations. Ppl dont simply become violent cos they get to shoot a pixelated AI character in a video game.

I saw the news of Ava.. Terribly sad. Especially given the young ages of the victim and alleged perpetrators. I did wonder why a 12 year old was out on a school night at that time but even then she should be able to stay safe.

How do you stop people from carrying and using knives?

Why don't we allow cigarette adverts on TV, radio, media? Perhaps there's an element of monkey see monkey do regarding graphic and dehumanising violence seen by people. Very very sad whatever the answer.

in our local paper there’s a case going where a man stabbed a driver while sat in his car and killed him over an exchange or words and the man that died was stabbed while his 4 year old son was sat in the car apparently the guy that did it was a regular user of cannabis and was extremely paranoid

Their is a lot of room but at what stage will any kind of positive improvement start we're in the 21st century and seems to be just going further backwards and the unthinkable happens strict laws and a revamp of the justice system to act responsibly for the safety of the public sector...

Exposure to violence, real or simulated, does not make an individual more violent. However, it de-sensitizes that individual such that we accept it more readily, until it affects us directly. At that point, we decide it's a problem.

That leaves everybody else as a potential victim.

"Also the murder of the young girl in Plymouth recently too. When will women and girls ever be safe in our streets. Enough is enough. "

Although I support safer streets for women I don't think this case is a particular misogynistic crime or sex specific. When we talk about street violence like this I think it's a case of girls will be safe when boys are likewise safe. I don't see this a specificly misogynistic crime, more a female wrapped up in the mindless violence that kills and injures boys daily. When we talk this sort of violence we have to recognise that the streets are very dangerous for boys. Altgough predominantly caused by young males, young males are vastly more likely to be killed or significantly injured from acts of violence. So surely we need streets that are safe for all? Boys are also the victims of toxic masculinity and a society that normalises boys role in aggression and violence. There is a culture that needs needs to change for our youth (because young women are also getting dragged into a street culture of violence and aggression). It's not just education, its about providing opportunities, role models, self worth and hope. By failing boys and young men we fail the rest of society. Part of protecting our women and young girls is to build up and encourage boys and young men in positive ways rather than villainising them and stigmatising them.

Maybe we should not try to arm the public so they can all be wannabe vigilantes

Maybe instead we should fund the police more and focus on education and guidance. "

I think the statement about fund the police would only happen if their wasn't as much corruption within.even though their is some very good people who are who are unaware within any force the scale is huge for the bad ones who get away with just about everything....

There's been a big disconnect between communities for a long time now. There are so many people struggling in this country and it's so easy for kids to be recruited into gang culture or crime. Kids especially have lack of support and any support they do have is at the end of a long waiting list.

Closing the youth centres had a big impact, these were a sanctuary for so many people and intercepted a lot of troubled teens. Add in the lack of opportunities, the increasing cost of living and equality issues, some people feel they have no choice to take another path.

Violence will always be here, it's our job to make sure every child in this country has a fair shot of not making those mistakes.

"Very sad, thoughts are with her family and with the families of any other victims of senseless violence.

They've been trying to educate the youth for decades, its not helping.

Also, its currently illegal to carry anything to defend yourself but people are still being assaulted with pepper spray, tasers, knives and guns on a daily basis.

Plus, if two people got into an argument and someone did got sprayed, it likely isn't going to end with one party lying on the flow bleeding out of a hole in them.

Feel you completely missed my point

Allowing people to carry pepper spray helps almost no one

Instead it gives millions an excuse to carry and use peppers spray.

You’ll see no change in violent crimes with a knife

And a huge increase in people being pepper sprayed.

Arming people isn’t the answer

People who want to harm other people will always be there and harm other people and no amount of education or legislation will ever change that.

That leaves everybody else as a potential victim.

Not even gonna attempt to tackle the straw man argument about the way things are in America, there's not much point because this ain't America..

Although, it would be interesting to known the amount of potential sexual assaults/muggings/stabbings foiled by the use of legally held personal protection over there. Not including guns.

I’d imagine very very few. It’s very easy to carry pepper spray, it’s much harder to use it well, and it’s almost impossible to have it ready to go in time to defend yourself.

Plus, I feel your ignoring the fact that it’ll be used too often when it’s not needed. Even Friday/Saturday night police will be dealing with instances of people getting pepper sprayed in self defence over silly arguments. That all takes police time to deal with those people. Police time that’s already very under funded.

Do you not think a better funded police force would help stop that?

Plus, I really don’t think the UK police is that corrupt. I dunno what sensationalised media you’ve been reading, but I’d bet the level of actual corruption is very low, and even then, more funding is gonna lower that by providing more resources to stop it

its currently illegal to punch someone in the face after a silly argument on a night, there are laws against it and thousands of people find themselves up in court on assault charges every week after a night out.

I think the vast majority of the general population are decent people and could be trusted to defend themselves. I personally don't think the police would have any more or any less work to do.

Anyway, I've been on forums long enough to know I can't change anyones mind if they disagree with an opinion I hold, and wouldn't try even if it was possible!

Have a good weekend.

Well luckily for everyone the “arm everyone” idea wouldn’t even get considered in this country so I guess there’s no point discussing it anyways

It's not the funding that's needed Within the force it's a structure, education and experience then follow what they have been trained to do as a moral duty why should any police officer be treated any differently to any other career whom have trained to be a nurse doctor teacher fireman/woman it's a moral duty and not go beyond that is where respect begins and the support is delivered both sides as for corruption seems you don't know as much as you may think or dug deeper into it but it is very bad and goes way back to present day on a daily basis....

"Hello O.P.

That was based on the original comment/statement by Merseyside Police, who have since retracted that statement and said they will wait for the findings of the post mortem.

Im sure you’re aware of that however

I can’t say I see it developing into that personally. It doesn’t seem in keeping with the general trend of not getting involved where possible

No. I'm not aware of that remotely. I've never heard any statement saying anyone was stabbed.

Your rolling eyes make it seem that you are very stressed.

What is it that makes you use rolly eyes ?

If you read the most resent BBC report on their website, it notes that ‘Merseyside Police previously said that she had been stabbed but later said a post-mortem would be carried out to establish the course of death.’ The BBC North West Twitter reports from earlier this morning also still refer to it being a stabbing incident, likely due to the inability to edit tweets.

Glad that could be cleared up for you

I went and found a statement online before you posted this.

You didn't clear anything up.

You could have answered my question civily in the first place but chose not to.

It's already going this way that's why their are so many groups to protect children being a victim to grooming.... Because if it wasn't for these we as public wouldn't understand how bad it is and those who have been caught regardless of their status.....

I can recall way back to the 70s early 80s and even years later when things were out of control because the deaths of two it spiralled across the UK but riots and it will happen again or something similar....

The Independent has a headline stating she was stabbed to death, posted 2 hours ago, then in the article says she was assaulted, with catastrophic injuries.

She's dead. I'm not sure how she was killed is important.
