Recent Christmas song classics?

They don’t make ‘em like they used to do they?

Right from a kiddie there’s been a familiar soundtrack to Christmas .. Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Slade, Wizzard etc etc all stand the test of time in terms of longevity (even if you’re not a fan of them).

I can’t think of a huge amount of more modern ‘classics’ .. songs that will endure the test of time.

I was thinking Shakin’ Stevens Merry Christmas Everyone would be the latest, but that’s from 1985, 36 years ago (bloody hell that makes me feel old ) just one year younger than Wham and Last Christmas.

But how could I forget Mariah Carey? All I want for Christmas is you was a mid 90s hit.

But have there been any since then that will still be played every Christmas in 20 years time? You tell me you sex-crazed funksters!

Fairytale of New York is a great song. It has turned into a Xmas song surprisingly as is about a d*unk abusive husband who beats his wife

Good shouts! I really dislike the Darkness but you’re right, it’s standing the test of time.

One More Sleep is a great song, very worthy

although in trouble last year due to un-PC lyrics. I wonder if AirPlay will be affected this Christmas?

Ooh a few I don’t know, I’m going to have to have a listen!

I was also thinking Kelly Clarkson Underneath the Tree is a modern banger too. Unless it’s a cover?

If it’s a good one I guess so? Bing Crosby / Nat King Cole etc did loads of covers and we look upon those as classics x

So Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews - Baby It's Cold Outside.

Love it.

Santa Baby - Kylie Minogue

And because I love it unashamedly and those little bells feel like Christmas

Ariana Grande's Santa Tell Me.

Thanks Op, you've inspired me to listen to those on Spotify!

I was just thinking this today. All the good Xmas songs are from years ago.

Good call with Sia - I wasn't a fan when I first heard it but it is so catchy I do find myself singing it for a day or two after I hear it now!

Controversial, I know but Another Rock and Roll Christmas by Gary Glitter is a really catchy song. It never gets played though.

Elton John's Step into Christmas is a catchy song that doesn't get much air play. Again it's probably nearly 50 years old

I actually liked last years song by Mabel. Its called loneliest time of year.

Yes not very cheery but very relatable to us singletons who have time to reflect.

Sadly it never got much air play last year.

And…. Adam_Tina your Chrimbo song is legendary! It’s as much a part of my Christmas now as mince pies, mistletoe and getting over-familiar with the Office Secretary at the works Christmas party! Good work!

For me it has to be Little Drummer Boy by Bing Crosby / David Bowie …. Love it.

I did note that Abba have a Christmasssy track on their new album … I suspect this may well become a Christmas classic - because it’s ABBA!!
