Genuine question. Why do you think people seem to go Christmas earlier and earlier each year.

My nan’s spare room.

I’ve noticed over the last couple of weeks that more and more people have their Christmas decorations up already than I’ve ever noticed before in November.

Why is this, I can only summise that the corporate consumer machine cons people that they are missing out.

If you went Christmas in mid November and you haven’t always done, why is that?

I think it’s directly linked to people just wanting to feel happier.

The bright colours and sparkly lights are great to return home too.

I don’t see any problem with things looking and feeling cheery.

Because Xmas is about community and family and very few people had that last year so are doubly making up for it this year

I’m not sure but between the folk that are putting decorations up in November, the tv ads and Christmas music in shops it’s not even December and I’m sick of it already

Probably because Bojo is going to threaten us about a lockdown Christmas so people are putting them up to feel more Christmassy for longer.

Maybe we should spring an earlier Christmas day upon him so he can't threaten to ruin it and we can have family round, open presents together etc etc?

His empty threats absolutely do my head in.

Back of Nowhere and Beyond

This is the first year in the last decade that I've actually had any kind of Christmas decorations displayed (for a variety of reasons), and the only reason I have a tree up at all, let alone so early, is because we won't be able to see each other in a month's time so celebrated last weekend.

Was rather awesome.

Someone on my Facebook put theirs up the same day they took their Halloween ones down I enjoy Christmas but it is only one day, two if you count boxing day, so I don't get why people get so giddy months beforehand. My parents always stuck to the tradition of decorations going up on 12th night so I stick to that.

It’s mainly because of marketing, this year there are also threats of shortages (which will allow corporates to broaden their profit curve, rather than spike in December).

I don’t have a television, and I will do Christmas as I have always done. I will invite a few “lonely” neighbours for the main meal on the day and I invite them over on the eve to put up a tree and decorate (I always get my tree on Christmas Eve). I don’t really buy into “a month long celebration” for me it’s just about inviting people over, having a few drinks, a nice meal and a social gathering.

I do think there is a degree of people desperate for some cheer in their lives, but this has always been the case for lots and lots of people.

Is their a risk of losing the effect of that special day.

Christmas is for the kids is something I’ve always gone by, but it is far more than that. I love Christmas and taking the decorations down in that first week of January always leaves me flat and sad as it marks the end of that special time.

However if I left them up would it still feel special, I’d say probably not.

I worked with someone nearly 40 years ago who used to put her tree up on 1st December. It's not a new thing but it is more prevalent. My opinion is that the specialness of Christmas is diluted the longer it goes on also let's face it, nobody is really celebrating the birth of Christ from mid November onwards.

I do agree that people need a little sparkle in their life though

I actually believe that this year people just want to rush and forget what the actual fuck up last year was.

Maybe we can try our best to start a celebration for whatever reason, and the earlier the better. Hi 5 to anyone who has decorations up now, we are simply a month away.

Not long to get all those nights out sorted. Your Xmas gift shopping done. Visiting the family.

I do think that the radio channels should lay off playing songs until the 1st though, I mean, it does get a bit boring after 8wks of Noddy.

I have definitely factually noticed that two houses in my street are decorated and they never have been in November before and it is not just my street I’ve noticed this.

I’m all for celebrating Christmas I actually love it, I’m just wondering why people seem to be starting Christmas early, people won’t prolong it I bet.

It’s been a shitty year for many, Christmas still marks the end of that and something to be excited about so they’re getting started earlier. I’m not surprised and I don’t really blame them

We went out Saturday evening to a party and we're surprised by the number of lights and decorations up. But as we were with our children it was lovely. They had a great time spotting the lights and inflatable Santa Claus.

It's dark, and it's cold and everyone's catching bugs. It's nice to see pretty lights and smile. I'm not sure Christmas has much to do with it

Cos it makes me happy have always started decorating about 6 weeks before the day but I’ve always worked in salons and that’s when we do it at work. I love Christmas as much now as I did when I was a child.

I guess it makes people feel happy? Though I don't know if it really does. I've seen an increase of people getting companies to put up bows on their front doors. More elaborate and expensive Christmas lights and what different colour scheme the tree will have this year.

My fondest memories as a kid was to pull out the old decorations and reminisce. Something I still do now and the kids buy a new decoration for the tree each year. One year one bought a felt dinosaur the other a pig. These make me all happy the mismatch of the new with the old.

I do think it's becoming more and more expensive just to decorate. And I think Christmas if you believe or not should be about friends family time together, not materialistic things.
