.....mince pies.

- Heston Night Before Christmas Mince Pie.

Heat according to instructions and you will experience a little taste of heaven that the pie accords before you've scoffed it. The pastry is to die for!

- Tesco Finest All Butter Pastry Deep Filled Mince Pies with Courvoisier.

Buttery pastry with a generous portion of cognac laced filling.

Has anyone else tried them?

What 'best' Christmas offerings can you recommend?

I like the pastry in a good mince pie also. The Heston one is amazing. It's slightly crunchy and not crumbly.

I must try them then. I like ones with a decent amount of filling.

It isn't the price. Fortnum & Mason's are really well below par for taste and they're about £13 a box.

I make my own. Nothing fancy. Shop bought jar of mincemeat. I make my own pastry. I do use half margarine, half lard, which isn't to everyone's taste, but does make very good pastry.

Shop bought mince pies are ok but the pastry always seems stodgy. The fillings can be a bit over-sweet or taste of nothing but alcohol too

Seriously, try the Heston ones. They are the opposite of what you've described as what you don't like about the shop-bought ones. Funnily enough, I don't normally drink alcohol but I like my mincemeat to taste a little bit of cognac.

It is dried fruits and spices, you're right. It just happens to be called mincemeat. Something to do with the pies being filled with minced meat originally, before the Victorians changed it into a sweet pie.

I'm not absolutely certain about that. Professor Google will have the answer.

"Homemade, filo

Morrisons mince meat with added cherries and a splosh of brandy

I find brandy doesn't tend to stand up as well as cognac. Is that just me?

it has to be a drinkable in a neat way kind of brandy, cognac or other decent sports would do. spirts, fat fingers strike again

I was trying to work out what sport had to do with it.

Well yknow, sometimes you can't decide between a brandy and tennis"

Quite right, my dear fellow. Never a brandy on the court. One does Pimms during tennis.

I like those too but they don't have that Christmas spice though.

"Costco mince pies are AMAZING!

Are they? The last one I tried about 3 years ago wasn't a success. Perhaps I'll give it another chance.

I love them. They are massive and have a cakey bit too. Deffo worth another try. "

'Cakey bit'? Now I'm intrigued. I will try it.

I used to get the ones from Lime Tree Pantry years ago, no idea if they exist now but their mince pies were perfection. Buttery shortcrust pastry in perfect harmony and ratio to soft mincemeant.

Have you tried it? I want to try that just for the sake of it.

Yes, mince pie with a hint of fish - as I said odd "

Heston's has carrot in his this year and it isn't as odd as it sounds.

Fish, on the other hand.....you're right, may be a tad too far for me.

I daresay, the fact that you need to supplement what is lacking in the panettone with brandy butter says it all, my dear. It simple can't measure up to the great mince pie.

I haven't tried them, ever. You have made me want to seek some out although I must admit that I'm somewhat besotted by Heston's this year. Everything else seems to pale in comparison.

The great mince pie needs no elevation. It stands on its own.

That sounds heavenly. Do you stick to the recipe or add some of your own touches? Is the filo pastry a little flaky but crunchy?

Heston has carrots in his mincemeat. It works really well.

I adapted it a bit and took something from his festive strudel which was to grate chocolate over it before I roll it

You get the crunch of the filo as you bite then the softness of the puff

For how long do you steep the mincemeat? Care to share the ingredients? I'm sworn to your secrecy on pain of death, it'll go no further than this thread.

Chocolate? Does it have a hint of chocolate taste to it? Is it a dark, bitter chocolate?

The pastry is exactly how I imagined it. Sounds heavenly.
