"Mr and my brother always used to give each other money on our bdays. Then we agreed it was pointless in buying a card that we both know will end up in the bin after a few days. And it's also pointless giving each other the same amount of money. In essence, we were wasting time and money on a card. So we agreed not to and ever since, we haven't got each other anything. We still say happy bday and meet up and go out on special occasions but we don't get each other anything " That's fair enough, a mutual decision

"I get my brother expensive geekie stuff and jellybeans. He buys me booze I don't like! " Ha, yes my brother does the same and I virtually never drink.

"OP can you not encourage your children to buy their siblings gifts" I will be, I enjoyed going shopping for my brothers present, him opening it and receiving his. They were never more than a couple of quid, but were always well received. I think sometimes kids are better at picking stuff for other kids because they are kids. A silly little £1 cap gun keyring would be as joyfully received as a £100 scalextric. I've clearly wrongfully assumed everybody brought Christmas and birthday presents for their siblings as kids. Live and learn" I think it’s a great idea When we are growing up we think what goes on in our house is the norm then as we get older and find out other families traditions we realise we are all unique I had a friend who got Xmas gifts from her parents whereas all ours were from Santa
