If he was happy and they were happy, then it was their business. I doubt they were actually married (bigamy is not legal).

If all involved are happy and willing I don't see a problem although as others have said bigamy is illegal so he can't have actually legally be married to them all.

I'd imagine because the roots of the marriage ceremony in the UK is Christian religiousness. That doctrine has persisted.
