in the early sixties...especially on new build estates..young swingers supposedly planted pampas grass in the front garden as a sign they were swingers to other likeminded people..how much truth there was is in this im not sure.

This was a thing in the 70's, I'm not sure how much credence is given to this notion now.

The recent decline is probably more down to garden fashion.
