My response is probably coloured by moving from an urban to a rural area

But

1. Greater reliance on family in Ireland , friends in England

2. Fewer sirens in Ireland

3. The EU is considered more positively in Ireland

4. Local representatives way more accesible in Ireland which I think makes their jobs hell on earth

5. Harder to find genuinely cheap pubs/bars/restaurants in Ireland

6. Local primary schools in Ireland uniformly outstanding in general

7. Much smaller populations required in Ireland to be classified as a city

A year in Northern Ireland following observations.

Harp Larger is very popular.

‘You’ll be having a drink’, is not a question and can sound both friendly and threatening.

Also ‘how about you’ is the same.

People will talk to you in a pub, just don’t talk about religion or politics.

UK is not the mainland.

Ulster fry will fill you up for the day.

It’s Derry to some and Londonderry to others. Not that you’ll know who you’ll upset by getting it wrong.

Ulster TT is raucous but friendly and generally wet.

Yes it rains ….a lot.

The accent can be picked up and you’ll find yourself talking like a local quite soon.

Belfast is a great City for a night out, but make sure you book a table at the weekend for a meal.

Don’t overtake a march on a motorbike, I soon got stopped and shown the errors of my ways (friendly but with a nod to the trouble I could find myself in)

Police carry guns.

Don’t let the troubles stop you from visiting, you will find the most generous and kindest people often emerge from conflict.

Lived in the UK for a long time but all of my close family is still in Ireland.

Cheaper overall in the UK. Taxation and general cost of living is high in ireland. Particularly cars.

Pubs are more fun in ireland.

I would say in many ways business is harder in Ireland. People want you to do well... but not too well. Don't get too big for your boots mentality.

Politicians tend to be from where they represent. I don't like the career politicians being parachuted in to safe seats in the UK.

Tayto are better than Walkers

Probably a better work life balance in Ireland.

And Probably a billion other things I can't think of

Mr. Bang bang

I've not lived in Ireland long but one thing I will say is the people do seem friendlier and also the atmosphere when out at pubs etc is much better. But I suppose it depends on where you live.

It's fucking expensive though. And I think living here is showing me how much money you need to live a comfortable life compared to how it was in the UK. But maybe again this comes down to location. But I do miss the NHS and buying and rent house prices.

Yes it's honestly crazy. I'm not sure how people manage to afford it all on a basic wage. I'd go back to the UK in a heartbeat if I didn't need to be here.

Ha ha oddly the funerals is one that always gets me. I'm still surprised when people aren't in the ground before the week is over.

Mrs bang bang always finds it crazy that Irish funerals have hundreds of people turn up. But then there's not much else to do...

It seems to get more and more expensive every time I go back. We've often said we think we'd need to earn at least 50% more to have the same lifestyle

When my dad died on the Sunday he was done and dusted (literally ) by weds ! So many people turned up too - some I’m not sure even knew him

We asked for a non religious service too - but they just couldn’t manage it lol! Dad had “I am the antichrist “ played as his cremation song too! Didn’t go down well

Ireland has much better public sector wages . Its property prices fell sharply between 2009 and 2014. You don’t pay water charges or council tax as such although there are smaller equivalents . Many people self build on family land .

One off housing in rural Ireland is often of phenomenal standard . I didn’t know what a utility room was until I arrived here .

In 2007 only japan had a higher proportion of millionaires

I miss the beaches, usually long clean and empty and a perfect place for dogs to run free

Any place that can invent Lyr and the Swans or Finn McCool is far more creative than expected

The rain... its the same rain just more of it in Ireland

The North West 200, on the years its not rained off

Bonfire Night in Ireland is in July

The walk from Bushmills to Fingels Cave

Barry's in Portrush...there's nowhere quite like it, well until they knock it down and convert it to flats....err apartments

The hotels who have displays up the staircase of every time they were bombed... yet their Piano Bar is part of Belfast beating heart

T-Shirts from the Titanic Muesum with the legend..."It was alright when it left here"...

Kinego Bay...yes the real one is in County Donegal

Any place that can name a town...Muff

Irish Mammies...a unique breed never to be crossed

Myths legends murals and painted kerbstones in the North

Its really rather magical...

Depends on the traveller I guess. But that is one big difference. It takes longer to get to most places in Europe, especially by car.

Not that that would put me off Ireland. It is an amazing place. People are very friendly and the quality of life is good there. But it is more remote.

The number of country pubs has shrunk dramatically though due to the weird way they issue and auction licences.

The Irish hate the English, whereas the English love the Irish.

Yes, ok, this is a sweeping statement and doesn't apply to all....

My other half is from NI but she now lives here in England. We went over a couple of weeks ago and i found it strange the way they sell booze in shops and the fact most shops don't open till 1pm on a Sunday. Also the R on new drivers and being restricted to 45mph. That messes my head up.

Somewhere in Co. Down

The cost of living is ridiculous in the south of Ireland. And so many taxes on your wages as well including one that includes paying for water which is why there was uproar when they tried to being in water charges as well a few years ago .The cost of visiting your GP is anything between €40 and €70 not to mention the cost of any meds you may need. Car tax is ridiculously high and just day to day groceries are expensive as well. If you are on a high wage then you're fine if you are on a lower one it's a daily struggle. So many people have to chose between food or keeping warm especially at this time of year these people also usually cannot afford to see their go if they get ill, but the politicians and better off don't give a damn really. They prefer to turn a blind eye.

Just like most places affordable housing is non existent and so many cannot afford to buy a home yet have to pay high rents because that is all that is left so they will never be able to afford a home of their own.

Yes property dropped in price like someone mentioned earlier at one point because there was a big crash after the so called Celtic tiger phase it has since risen to extortionate levels again.

Yes it is an absolutely stunning place and the people are friendly most of the time anyhow.

The myths and the legends that Ireland have are brilliant and always worth looking up on. I love Ireland all of it but I had to move from the south years ago because I could no longer survive living down there and rather than get into debt I moved north. Which is amazing the people and the scenery up here is stunning the wages may be less but it cheaper living costs .

I can't speak much about England as I only lived in London for a summer when I was in my teens. It was good craic but I moved home to continue my education at the time.

Dublin

So I've not lived in the UK but to give English people a rough idea of Irelands prices as follows, now clearly Dublin is even more expensive in general but of course London would be also. BUT in general terms this our kinda costs.

Tax is at 20% and 40% so quite similar to the Uk, then add on things called USC and PRSI and you end up at around 51% for higher rate income earners.

Cost of renting a 3 bedroom house is about €1200-1500 pmth and rises beyond 2,000 and more on cities.

Car insurance is about 400-600 for a standard car, with crazy prices if 6our a young driver rising up to 1or2k.

Cost of a good meal in a restaurant with wine, circa 45 euro.

Cost of buses are ridiculous if your getting CIE buses, but long distance buses privately are quite competitive. Trains don't service most of ireland and are expensive. The UK train network would be far superior but also expensive I gather.

Cost of doing business in ireland isn't too bad aside from rents and rates, the corporation tax is competitive and helps somewhat.

Cost of being Irish....priceless!

For what it's worth,I think England has so many places to visit and see,it's got a better infrastructure and NHS seems to be better than our awful HSE which is dire.Schools in Ireland tend to be amongst the best in Europe but class sizes rising.

Full state pension is around 245 pweek.

Unemployment benefit is 203 pweek but can be higher depending on the person's circumstances.

Child benefit is 140 pmth

until they turn 18.

Services for people with needs tends to be better in Ireland.

Both countries share alot of similar stuff really.
