you make a soup.

you heat a soup.

...but you don't 'cook' a soup.

why is this?

...or am I wrong and you do cook soup?

Wirral

I cook soup often. Sometimes I make it in a soup maker, but I often cook it in a slow cooker.

East London

I don't think I say I cook anything; it's always make.

Make stew, make a curry, make shepherd's pie.

I chop, heat then simmer, we call it “making,” but it’s really cooking.

Soup is the final product which you should heat through without 'cooking' this is why you don't cook soup but do cook a roast dinner, you can make a roast dinner too of course but you can only cook the veg to make soup not cook the soup itself

In the middle

If it’s from scratch I would say “make”, if it’s already made I would say “warm up”, I don’t think I’ve ever said I’m going to cook soup, it doesn’t sound right
