Hitler Impressions

Once Adolf Hitler was fair game for Comedians to ridicule. Freddy Star, John Cleese to mention two. Many of you will not recognise those names. Then the woke cancel culture began. Prince Harry for one condemned for wearing a nazi uniform at a fancy dress party.

John Cleese has announced that he has withdrawn from addressing Oxford University students because the University circulated a list of speakers who are cancelled and one for the reason that he had impersonated Hitler.

He would rather cancel himself than be cancelled by others.

Roll on today. The Guardian, Independent and others publishing survey results that less than half of Britions know that 6 million lost their lives. Is there a link here. Diminish the parody and diminish the awareness...

It's Cambridge uni.

Cyclically tho... Person making documentary on cancel culture does PR stint.

I have no idea the context of Andrew Graham-Dixon impression... But didn't sound like comedy if it was part of a debate.

I haven't seen the impressions but are they satirical in way that makes Hitler look like a fool? If so, then it possibly plays down the awful things he did by making light of it even though millions lost their lives.

There isn't a link between people knowing 6.6million Jewish people lost their lives and John Cleese being "cancelled" either. It's an education problem, not a comedy one and the 2 in my opinion are mutually exclusive inthat regard

It's not a competition. It's just as important to learn about current societal issues as it is to learn about historical ones.

Comedy is comedy sometimes it may seem in bad taste but the British tend to deal with difficulties and traumatic events through humour. Cancel culture is a slippery slope and one which could have several unintended, negative consequences.

I agree, and you can acknowledge that something is product of its time without holding it against a person. Personally, I don't find any humour about war funny because eit can trivialise a serious topic. The comedy has to be done well to avoid that.

"I went to a Halloween party this year as a WW2 German with a bullet through my skull "

My old friend Frank was in the Wehrmacht in Russia. He advanced to a field where the bodies had been buried but the hundreds of German helmets all had a bullet hole in each of them. Soviet snipers were the scourge of the Germans.

The ol BLM tried leaning on Liverpudlians to remove any mention of people trafficking Gangmasters from road names and places but unfortunately the Beatles sang about penny lane and Penny traded people from Africa to the UK then America and there's zero chance any green Poundland dyed hair student is changing Liverpool's history when the Beatles are involved

If you grew up with people who lived here in 1940, fled Poland or fought their way into Germany you’d appreciate why knocking Hitler was so important to a generation.

As a 70s kid I watched The World at War and saw those bodies at Belsen. I didn’t know what a Jew was. But I knew something unspeakable had been brought to various peoples in the world.

I’m sure many posturing today over what can’t be said in their presence have little knowledge of the complete truth. But the fact is

Nazism was born of the same litter as many other ideologies. Anything that restricts minds and human emotion and life and culture is a scourge that needs to be culled.

I think we have to be careful not to create an apparatus (all be it with all good intentions) that can eventually come back and bite us in the arse. I think you have to be very careful when you remove discretion for nuance and remove the platform for ridicule. That is a pathway to tyranny just the same as allowing open and unbridled bigotry and intolerance is. A free society is messy with lots of grey areas for discussion, disagreement and scrutiny (and you can't not hurt or offend everyone). I'd far prefer that than either a society where the bigots have free reign unchecked or where every bar the party line is silenced.

It can be used for virtue-signalling such as being offended on behalf of someone else, but it's mostly supposed to make people be aware of what's going on around them and not live in their own little bubble.

Why is that unique to this generation? "

Probably due to it being the information era. We have a vast wealth of knowledge at our fingertips that there's almost more pressure to have our finger on the pulse of what's going on an no excuse to be close-minded.

"Cleese is 82 years old. He is entitled to give no fucks anymore.

Ahmed !!!

Fuck this woke culture !!!!

Why?

Forces old people to actually think with an open mind

Are you saying woke culture forces old people (do define “old” ) to think with an open mind? Or that you agree that we should “fuck woke culture”?

Apologies, some older people to think with an open mind. I think it scares those set in their ways, that they don't know all the answers so dismiss "woke culture" hoping it goes away

Lad you have no clue what way I am anyway to that lady yeah obviously a stupid off the cuff statement sounds stupid now !

Look I’m a very open minded man I don’t discriminate against anyone for there views, religion there politics there sexuality don’t care

i just feel some aspects of the woke attitude is going to far and it’s nothing to do with age maybe be for some

Yeah, possibly there are some things that are taken too far but I've found people being way too offended by other people being offended and essentially resorting to name-calling. It's pointless.

Look I get I started this and of course the view was he’s a naive dumb shit after saying that !

Wouldn’t be far off but na mate I’m not that much older we’d probably agree on most things but just when I see Dave Chappell a hero of mine losing his job over doing his job something ain’t right

Don’t recall seeing that DC had “lost his job?”"

Yeah sorry he is still at Netflix I think but he had a movie coming out and he was scheduled to do a load of film festivals and every one canceled!

Look I get his humor definitely nowadays is border line but i also see him make strong statements about the LGBTQ community and how he has had a trans comedian open for him !!!

That’s probably my one and only issue with this woke culture that everything seems so restricted as not to offend anyone

I see your point about information. I grew up in Australia and it was very parochial but I paid attention to things outside my own bubble even in my twenties as most people did.

I didn’t know the film festivals had cancelled. I don’t have a problem with protests - I mean that’s been going on for decades. I just don’t see equal protests and outrage about other issues eg Netflix sexism or racism.

"Comedy is comedy sometimes it may seem in bad taste but the British tend to deal with difficulties and traumatic events through humour. Cancel culture is a slippery slope and one which could have several unintended, negative consequences.

I agree, and you can acknowledge that something is product of its time without holding it against a person. Personally, I don't find any humour about war funny because eit can trivialise a serious topic. The comedy has to be done well to avoid that."

We both really enjoyed this movie (it's very rare we'll pay to stream a movie at home).

The six million included those killed by bullets too. It didn’t include Roma, homosexuals, mentally ill, communists, Soviet POWs and the planned killing of over 30 million Slavs.

Don't get me wrong. I might be pissed (I definitely am pissed) but the mass murder of that many people, based purely on their heritage, being the butt of a joke is fucking disgusting. And the fact that anyone would be prepared to defend that is even worse. Babies were killed. Babies in the arms of their desperate mothers. Babies in the arms of their desperate mothers for no reason.

Men. Brilliant men, helping the allies. All based on their fucking papers.

Disgusting.

They're not. Celebrities aren't fully cancelled unless they do some truly horrific shit. Otherwise they're cancelled for a bit, people find another person to get upset over, and then all is forgotten

Every person that’s ever been “cancelled” did some truly horrific shit? They’re all guilty as charged by the public? People are cancelled (and I mean losing their reputation and livelihoods) based on very little these days. Some are well known, some are not.

The only one I can think of is an MC called Wiley. He said a whole load of anti Semitic shit on tw*tter and was rightly kicked off the platform and had other social media severely limited and rightly so. But I’ve seen worse stuff said by others and them actively get given platforms to spout their hate

Cancel culture is a red herring used by people to create more media noise around a none existing problem.

John Cleese refusing to give his very privileged opinion to a group of very privileged university students is not a story for what ever reason he gives. But if feeds the culture war narrative.

What is and is not acceptable in the public domain changes over time and rightly so that’s how society grows and develops. You can still say whatever right wing crazy, sexist, homophobic etc thing you want and many do. The difference is the internet has democratised public discussion so you are far more likely to face back lash then say 10 years ago.

The reason people don’t understand things like the Holocaust is more due to gaps in education and the way we engage with the history of the second world war.

"

If you forget history it can have a nasty habit of repeating itself "

History does not repeat itself (in a simplistic fashion); time moves on,circumstances change, social mores change, but people become more aware and more educated about the human condition.

Henry Ford's quotation is repeated as nauseum.

The vast majority of problems in the world are instigated by malignant narcissists, psychopaths and sociopaths who adopt political ideologies to further their warped personal agendas.

The world that Caligula occupied is vastly different to that when Adolf Hitler was acquiring power in 1933.

Malignant narcissists are proundly damaged people who have a disdain for human beings whom they dissmisively refer to as empaths, that is empathic people who are pro social and caring individuals.

John Cleese has a privileged position in life shown by attending St. Andrews and Cambridge universities. While his private schooling was paid for by inheritance, i would say that he was clearly involved in some fine creative work many years ago for which we all recognise him. But he is now part of the very establishment he once railed against. He is also trolling here, and looking for some media coverage.

Exactly, the internet has democratised the public forum. You need not be informed to get your opinion out and you don’t need to have a media outlet to say whatever you like. This is both good and bad. But what it does mean is that while years ago you could be famous and that would be treated with reverence for the most part. Now anyone can respond, reply and organise which is a new experience for people who have controversial opinions.
