Probably home unless the flight times make it reasonable to do for a weekend.

I think it’s more fun just to jump in the car and be spontaneous. You’ll know where you’re going once you get there type of thing.

Grab you passport then you’ve got the option of a weekend abroad somewhere too.

"The Lake District."

Keswick is nice but very touristy and busy.

Ambleside - pretty much the same, less parking than Keswick and more chance of being stuck in hours of traffic depending on season.

Patterdale - only been a couple of times and it's always been pretty quiet. Just full of patterdale dogs and owners!

One of my favourite romantic weekend hotels is the William Cecil in Stamford.

Stamford is a lovely little town, and the hotel is on the Burghley estate which is a gorgeous place for a walk.

The hotel is great, very romantic with big ornately carved wooden beds. I've been there four or five times for work and dirty weekends, and always had a great stay.

Going to the peaks or the lakes is always a good bet, not necessarily at this time of year though.

Edinburgh is a beautiful city, as is York

Bakewell is absolutely charming, the general Peak District is. Chatsworth Estate has various accommodation available to suit all budgets and I think at this time of year a nice long ramble, a cosy fire in a pub with good food and then back to a beautiful hotel room with a freestanding bath and an incredible breakfast is romantic. It's nice to just be together without trying to visit x, y and z.

I'd suggest other areas but I'm hoping the other half reads this and picks up on the hint for a semi offgrid mini break.

You could even tag the new Buxton Crescent Ensana hotel and spa to that. Ridiculously luxurious

Oh yes! I think it's still residents only so you can do spa and a stay and it shouldn't be too busy.

We enjoyed a lovely weekend in the Peaks just before the first lockdown...cosy airbnb with a log burner, stopped at M&S on the way to stock up on nice food, wine and nibbles, and enjoyed walks in the countryside with stops at country pubs we found along the way. Twas a marvellous weekend, and much more intimate than a hotel or city break
