"Managed a 45min run Monday evening, so happy as I thought 3/4 of the way through I was too knackered and would just do 35min. But found the energy to carry on and do an extra 10minutes. It is an odd feeling where some parts of the body are freezing cold, while at the same time being covered in sweat." I know the feeling! It’s one of the reasons why I traditionally try to avoid lots of winter training. My feet get freezing cold!

" This will be my first year of running and I want to keep it up otherwise I feel that I won't pick it up again when the weather improves. I notice the cold air in my throat more than anything so far, my feet are usually cold no matter what time of year it is.

"Just been out … need to keep training over the winter …. Really difficult to motivate oneself with the cold weather and the rain. Well done everyone for keeping it up " I must admit that I chicken out on the rain and strong winds and go another day, so far I've been lucky on that front.

"Lots of you guys say about being cold their lots of cold weather run Gear out there last for years cold feet try seal skin socks no there not made form ?? they're waterproof." It’s a hard balance between being comfortable and being too hot. What you’re comfortable with on the first km or so will change very much after that. I set off tonight all ready for a chilly run and was greeted by a warm run where I lost half my body weight in sweat!

"Just been out … need to keep training over the winter …. Really difficult to motivate oneself with the cold weather and the rain. Well done everyone for keeping it up " Agreed. It’s hard to find the motivation when it’s dark and cold. This is why running clubs are great

Ron Hill is good and not expensive as well..

"Slow start to the week, kids had in-service days so no opportunity to run yet. Making the most of the rest days having run 3 5km thu/fri/sat at the end of last week. Going to try an push my next run out to 8km, before going for a 10km next week sometime (possibly round Belfast if anyone can recommend a route)" Just be careful not to push the distance too far, too fast. I’ve said it on other threads but the rule of ten percent per week is a good one to stick to

Do you have a training plan or are you going to see how you go in the lead up? " Will start training properly after Christmas, my sister did the Manchester Marathon so she can train me! Will do 2 or 3 small runs and 1 long run per week and build up the Ks gradually, taking it easy the week or two before.

In the past I’ve used the winter months to focus on strength training, conditioning and keep the running to shorter distances

"Trying to build back up to 10K - doing three 15th now blocks tomorrow, with 2 and 3 minutes walk between the blocks. Got a mini mudder type event on Thursday night, first time I’ve done one of these, and about to sign up for the grim challenge on 5th December " There’s a lot to be said for Jeffing (run/walk training) it’s an effective way of building stamina and keeps the heart rate within training zones so is a beneficial way of training

"I just started couch to 5K this week but as I have a problem knee I have tweaked the exercise to suit myself. I take my cycle with me so I can do a short jog and then cycle instead of the walk. 1st day wasn't able to jog at all after the brisk walk but today managed 3 short jogs and a 20 min cycle. Plan is to take longer than the recommended 9 weeks." That's not good if you have a problem knee, is that a short or long term issue? Are you using the NHS/BBC app?

"long term for the knee, ok most of the time but it doesn't like me running. I haven't downloaded the app but I looked at the NHS app online to see what I need to do. I wasn't able to exercise yesterday as planned so I went out on the bike today and managed 9.5 miles, happy with my progress." Cycling via a lot easier on the knees than running, but a good pai if shoes should help mitigate against the impact.

"My best run in weeks on Monday. Bloody painful shins for ages now, but got myself sorted with some rest, compression sleeves and good insoles and more stretching. Off to do the least favourite tomorrow aka intervals. Right on track to get back to early October form pre foot issue And on a different note.. I got my friend to start coach to 5k and now her family is joining park run with me. I am a timekeeper this Sat which makes me really excited! Made some great friends volunteering and I'm the new favourite troublemaker of our run director haha. Had a good laugh when my scanner went crazy last time. And there is a very good chance we will have both Christmas and NY day park run. Whoop whoop. I have the outfit ready! " I am in Harrow for Christmas Day I think and New Year’s Day in Manchester lol Just done my park run at burgess park. First run for 2 months due to traveling each Saturday. Not quick at all and heart rate far to high but made my way around in 36.36 lol which I will take

"I've had a calamity, what I thought was muscle ache and so carried on pushing myself was sciatica and I've done myself a mischief. I'm resting for a couple of weeks and will start again when I don't hurt anymore. I'm considering physio or a trainer for advice and support moving forward because I don't want to give up. " Ouch! Hope it heals up quickly and you’re back on form soon.

"I've not done a park run yet, unfortunately by the time I got to a position to be able to run the 5k in one go we started opening our shop back up on a Saturday, so hence end up working. But I may seek out a 10k run in the spring if I manage to keep up with running over the winter months." You can still register and input your non park runs until you can run one day ?

"Went for a 6km run around the park earlier - it’s one of those days where it’s so cold outside that when I got home I just sat on the wall for a bit to cool down after the run and you get enveloped in a fog / mist of your own sweat condensing in the air.
