Between the two it's usually split. Although we always prefer to offer to pay the full amount, I know some people don't always feel comfortable with that.

If I think what I had is less than the average I'd say split unless I was aware that there were some in the group being deliberately frugal or who I knew to be a bit hard up. There is nothing worse than being out with people who have a lot more money than you and worrying if you'll be able to afford the bill. If I feel I've spent more than others I would prefer to pay for what I've had.

Lost count of how many tables I've had where there's a group who pay for EXACTLY what they've had, which yeah, it's their perogative, but it's frustrating as fuck when you do all the extra work that comes with it, serve just the 1 large group who take up all your tables for the night and no tip gets left when in that time you could have served lots of tables of 2 who could all leave a quid or 2 each.

if ive invited someone, then i expect to pay all, but if its just a casual meet with friends for a meal then slit the bill, life is to short to be aresing about working out who had what, if someone is obviously hard up and watching money, i will have the same as them, then there is no awkwardness

Generally, I prefer to split the bill equally and add a bit for a tip. As I don't drink, the only time I pay just for what I've had is when everyone is chucking booze down their necks and I'm on the water (there's only so much pop you drink).

I don't know about in a large group, but certainly out with a lady, as I happen to be one of the last of the dinosaurs from the era when hardware was something that you got at the iron mongers, and the only software around was located between old men's legs before viagara was invented, when it was also hip for a guy to take a lady out who had gone to a lot of trouble to look her best for the occasion, and not expect her to have a pocket calculator in her handbag to work out her share of the tab.

When I was married, we used to go out with another 2 or 3 couples quite regularly.

There was one couple who if they had a few drinks and an expensive meal they would say just divide it up. When they only had a cheaper meal and not many drinks would demand that we split the bill.

It used to wind us all up. We stopped telling them when we were going out after a while.

Well as a couple we usually never have starters or desert, Mrs is a small eater and one of us isn't drinking alcohol we prefer to pay for what we've had.

Particularly if there's a group where people have starters and dessert plus extra side dishes and cocktails, pitcher's and bottles of wine.

Personally I think a set menu with pre agreed meal price.

Then pay for own booze is best way.

And the other thing that fucks me off about paying for what you've had. Some cunt always forgets what they've had and the cost of a portion of onion rings gets left on the bill and the person who's had them has already left.

Who pays for them now? ME! I fucking end up paying for them because once the bill has had transactions on it, items can't be removed or voided. So your waiter pays for them.

Think about that when you're paying for what you've had. Make sure you don't forget something

Pay for what I’ve had always. Purely because I don’t drink alcohol at all and people I’m out with can have 3 or 4 glasses of wine each during a meal and I’ll be fucked if I’m paying for that when I drink iced water with lemon.

I’ve got the last meal us 4 girls had. £139 in total. £56 of that was food £83 was alcohol. (Not putting the odd pence on)

£139 divided by 4 is £34.75. Yet my meal cost £14 exactly and my pint of water was free. Should I pay an extra £20 for them, umm no.

Course not. not many of my friends don’t drink but if someone isn’t then they don’t pay anything towards the drinks bill. People who faff about her dinner was £2 more than mine though wouldn’t be my kinda people.

I don't drink so if I went out with people who were drinking I would split the bill but wouldn't be expected to pay as much as everyone else (if everyone else was drinking of course). Mind you I went out for lunch today and I paid for mine and she paid for hers, I got doughnut a take away as we were leaving so was only fair.

No I definitely wouldn't be faffing around about a couple of quid. I usually keep a rough mental tab of what I've had and round it up to a round number to include a tip but I've definitely been there when I've had 1 course and soft drinks because I'm diving and not that hungry/on a diet and people who have had 3 courses and cocktails/bottles of wine want to split the bill equally and you end up basically shamed into spending an extra £20-30 or more on other people's orders. I'd be slightly miffed these days but just grin and bare it and make a mental note not toneat out with those people again but I even had it happen when I've not had much money and I've ordered within my budget only to end up with an expensive bill because of other people ordering loads and insisting on splitting it equally.

Pay for what I have had unless we are treating someone. I find going to the bar etc before the bill is presented and paying there is best. I don’t drink much when I am out and I am careful with my budget so can’t really afford to pay more than my fair share. The tip is different. I leave that separately on the table.

It depends on the group. I have one group of friends who we just split the bill. Another group pay for what we have.

There is a former colleague of mine that I refuse to do split the bill with as they take the piss with what they order. He is the type that if it’s made clear it’s pay for yourself then he’ll have a pint and a pasta dish. If it’s split the bill then he has multiple drinks, multiple sides, generally steak and dessert. First time I refused to split at the end of the meal he openly hit the roof and stated he wouldn’t have ordered what he had if it hadn’t been split the bill. He was fuming with me for weeks

I don’t have a team I always think about others in the group and do what works for them , because I was on the receiving end of this when younger. It can be awkward if you’re on a budget. Often 2-3 of us who can will just get the bill for the group or I’ll get it and ask others to leave the tip then next time someone else can get it. If someone insists on paying it all I let them.

I’ve worked in retail and made mistakes- ie given the wrong change etc - but never been expected to make up the difference.

Tbh unless the service was dire I’d never consider not tipping. I’ve been out with groups of right arsed friends though and had to ‘persuade’ them to round it up by a quid or two to give a decent tip.

If people are constantly and notoriously tight in restaurants then I don’t eat out with them - I just meet them for drinks or cook for them.

Agree if people are right not to eat with them , but some people aren’t tight, they just have a budget. I’ll happily pay for others in my group if they are struggling, but no one will ever persuade me to tip if I dint want to tip, it’s my choice if abs what I tip and no one else’s and I would never expect or ask any one to tip out of habit that’s just rude , I’ll more likely get the bill reduced in the U.K. because service is often shit

Count the number Of People at the table, query the bill, accuse the waiter of lying , cause a massive scene, insist the police are called screaming they’re trying to fleece us - all get thrown out - no need for any embarrassing splitting the bill!!

We usually split, unless some are drinking alcohol. Then they pay for their drinks separately.

If its a large group, pay for what you ordered. I usually tally up my total and round up and throw that in, the extra can go towards the top.

If I'm on a date, either I'll pay all of it or split it equally

Depends what I had and who I'm with.

Since I don't drink, people usually acknowledge that during boozy meals and insist I don't pay as much as them.
