Was in Tesco’s earlier and as I’m vertically challenged I couldn’t reach this mars milkshake on the top shelf so I asked some dude if he could reach it for me, said please and thank you and was polite and he did it with a big smile and walked off like he’d just slayed a dragon.

Love the chance to be nice and/or helpful with nothing expected in return. Last time for me was loading a woman’s car in IKEA car park. Being a gent is very satisfying

Not just men. I like helping people. Small acts of kindness, assistance and generally just being nice is so so important.

I've raised all my boys to be gentlemen to everyone and it shows in how they treat others.

Sadly though not everyone is so kind and if I asked a bloke in Tesco to help he might not be so keen to since I'm not deemed to be hot.

Today I cut up some timber in the B&Q carpark for a lady who was struggling. It took me 5 minutes at most. Was she hot who cares she was in need of assistance. Did I walk away feeling like I had slayed a dragon? I wouldn’t be so pretentious.

Asking for help can go wrong as well. Back in 2013 in my old house I was sitting on my doorstep having a fag and when I went to go back in I could see a slug on the inside seal of my front door. Couldn’t close the door cos I’d get a squashed slug there, couldn’t move it or attempt to flick it off with anything cos slugs and polystyrene are the things I can’t be near or touch. Went to my neighbours house to ask for the son but he was out but his father offered his slug removal services. He was about 30 stone, could barely walk. I was like nah it’s fine I’ll get some hairspray and a lighter on it. He insisted, came hobbling round, got the slug off, as he was leaving he tripped over the step by my gate, went tumbling on the floor. I couldn’t get him up, he must’ve still had the slug in his hand cos he said he was gonna chuck it in the opposite neighbours skip yet it probably would’ve been mushed up in his hand. Had to enlist help again and flag these teenagers down to help me get him back on his feet. He was fine, but that stopped me asking for help off anyone for many years after.

Trust me, I have this problem too sometimes …and I’m 5’6”

I had to jump and grab, and other times I had guys get me stuff at the back of the top shelves cos I also can’t reach.

This problem is real

I'm 5'9" and have also had this problem. Especially of the stock isn't at the edge of the shelf.

I had to go down the household aisle, pick up a mop off the shelf, go back to the high shelf, use the mop to push/pull what I wanted because I didn't want to ask someone to reach it.

I'm always helpful and its not just a damsel in distress. Earlier at the services I held the door for a woman pushing her partner in a wheelchair,they must have been about 15 metres away from the door. They said thankyou and I replied your very welcome. My good deed done for the day.

Until this year my local Morrisons shelves were just above my eye level and easy to reach (except the bread aisle which is against the wall.

The Asda and Tesco superstores shelves are much higher and I have to look up to the top shelves.

The local Co-op has a low ceiling and a low top shelf, so they aren't all standard sizes.

A friend of mine (wheelchair user) fell face first into a freezer when she leaned into it. Apparently horrified the surrounding shoppers but she struggled to right herself because she was laughing too hysterically

If my sons see anyone struggling (make or female) they would offer assistance if they could help.

When they were younger they would shovel the snow off from our elderly neighbours paths.

On public transport they would give up their seats if someone had more need for them.

They never let me carry shopping and are just helpful in general.

My daughter is the same way.

Are we really arguing about supermarket geometry?

The shop I worked in as a teenager, the shelves were just built with strips of slots in the back then these triangular bits that fitted into the slots at whichever height you wanted and then the shelves came in two parts that slotted together on top of those triangular bits. You could put the shelves at any height you wanted up to the very top if you wanted but we usually kept them at least 20-30cm from the very top.

In answer to the OP, one of my partners and my dad are over 6ft and live alone so as a result, everything in their homes is really high

. I'm 5ft 7 but can only see my eyes in the mirrors and can't get things in the kitchen. I regularly have to ask for help there.

Occasionally I do in the supermarket if things are at the back of a high, deep shelf. I'm also occasionally asked to help shorter people than myself. Always happy to. Seems to usually be a little old lady after worthers originals or wine gums. It's so mean they put those on the top shelf!

Even worse though. Try getting Beef Hoola Hoops from the bottom shelf in Asda when it's only half full!!

It's an inch off the ground and you have to get down on your hands and knees to teach them. I mentioned to the staff that crawling on the floor to reach products was demeaning and unhygienic. She was fine but might as well have said "so fucking what!?"

Last time I was in Aldi I was trying to get bread off the top shelf and a young guy said he'd get that for me. I said thank you very much and that it was very kind of him. Hi girlfriend wasn't bothered that he'd helped me. It's nice to know there are still good people out there x

I put on my best bitch face when out so I don't get bothered by people...but the old ladies...arghhh they don't fall for it,see right through me and I end up doing everything I can to help 'em out! I think maybe they deliberately target me and my bitch face, just see it as a challenge

Yes of course.....and friends, random strangers in need and the elderly.

Asked an elderly woman if she needed a hand with her bags last week as she was walking up a bit of an incline but she refused and gave me a shoddy look. I think she thought she may not have got them back

There was a bloke in front of me in Aldi who didn't have his wallet at the checkout. He had a full bag. It only came to £10!! Thought it would be £40.

If i'd known it was a tenner i'd have bought it for him.

Felt stupid that Aldi was so cheap it stopped me helping out!! Lol

Recently went to a site meeting and while walking down a corridor with a female engineer half my age I offered to help carry some heavy steel samples she was carrying to the meeting while other male engineers her age ignored her

She had a go at me for being sexest and wrote an email to the company to complain about me

It's my company so I ignored it but I'm of the age where thats normal for me and it won't stop me.

I have no problems with helping ladies I was ask othe day at Tesco by an old lady to reach some kitchen rolls at back of shelves she said thank you then we got talking about stuff and ended up asking me to go for a coffee

I am always doing the top shelf thing for ladies and shorter guys.

No point being tall if you can't use it.

I help people carry things, push cars and once spent a night helping cars out of ditches in the snow.

It feels good so is not purely altruistic

Exactly this, for anyone not just females. Gender doesn’t play a part in manners, it’s the right thing to do, I was brought up to be polite and courteous, it costs nothing and inwardly makes me smile doing my good deeds for the day.
