There's an arcade bar called NQ64 in the Custard Factory (Digbeth) if you're looking for fun.

Chance and Counters is a board game cafe next door, haven't been but their food looks excellent too.

New Street Station out of Birmingham.

Its a shit hole. German xmas market avoid, rip off prices full of crap and possible food poisoning..saw alot of discarded half cooked hotdogs on the floor the other day.

Robbery and pick pockets is plentyful around the market so be careful.

Loads of road works in Brum and beggers.

Place used to be nice.

I grew up there, these are the same complaints I've heard all through the last 30 odd years. Both before the bullring was redone and after.

I'd be interested to hear when you think it used to be nice.

Its just a big city with all the pros/cons that go along with being a big city.

Coventry

Personally like others have said I'd avoid the Christmas Market and surrounding area.

For sexy fun (or just to unwind in a relaxed atmosphere, maybe a hot tub or a Sauna)?

If travelling on Train Chameleons Darlaston I'd recommend (also our favourite club). It opens at 12:00 on a Saturday (the whole club) and normally a good afternoon crowd in on a Saturday. Plus you can get a good lunch there too. It is a short bus or Taxi ride from Walsall Station. Walsall is about 20-25 min down the track from New Street with a train at least ever 30 mins. We've used the train to get there a few times, not a problem.

Or if you don't feeling a little bit more vanilla and in need of good food and drink?

The Indian Berwery for a selection of great beers and a lovely selection of Indian snacks/light meals. It's under the railway arches by Snow Hill Station.

Or there are a few good bars and places to eat in the Jewellery Quarter. It's one stop down the line from Snow Hill Station or walkable from the city centre or Tram or Bus.

Either way I'd avoid the German Market area.

Oh and in general is travelling by train prepare for them to be completely rammed in and out of Birmingham on Saturday with the Market on. Book seats if you can but also be prepared when trains are totally rammed and its full and standing all bets are off regarding reservations because getting to your seat may be impossible.

Birmingham is awesome but then, as you said, it's a big city - if you don't like big cities you won't like Birmingham. Lots to criticise but a whole lot more to love.

Calling it a "shit hole" says a lot more about the person writing it than the city tbh.
