Avian Influenza Protection Zone

Realising we have so many backyard poultry keepers, we thought we'd share the fact that due to cases of H5N1 bird flu increasing in the UK, the Government has this evening declared an Avian Influenza Protection Zone across the whole UK. The details can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu#AIPZ

It applies to ALL keepers of chickens, ducks, geese etc, even if you only have 1. Suggest downloading the PDF at the web address above because it does have legal implications for all keepers of birds. For example, you are now legally required to keep a record of egg movement on/off your premises. So, if you give eggs away to friends/family etc, you have to keep a record and there's certain standards those records must conform to.

Hope everyone's backyard birds stay healthy and safe!

"Are they required to wear masks at this stage? "

You’ll never get a mask on a chicken; no external ears.

Unclear, but they must apply wing sanitiser hourly

Thanks for this mrs KC, mr has moved his inside as he has done for the last few winters. He is also instructing them to wash their wings frequently whilst singing happy birthday.

Also suggest anyone who keeps birds signs up to the DEFRA alerts for this sort of thing. We get text and email alerts about them......

And now, the weather in YOUR area

Are they going to be placing the chickens in tiers?

Tier1 can go outside and do normal chicken things

Tier 2 must go out only for laying eggs and feed

Tier 3 must stay in their hen house at all times

Kind of. The Protection Zone details issued today refers to all premises with poultry birds kept indoors or outdoors (not pet budgies etc) and is for people NOT told they are inside a more stringent set of measures (usually within a certain kilometre radius of confirmed H5N1 cases).

Schedule 1 biosecurity measures apply to "backyard" keepers of fewer than 500 birds. The details of what Schedule 1 means is in the PDF at the link I posted in the OP.
