"I actually don't have clue what any of that means. Ready Player One is a fictional book set in a dystopian future, centred around an artificial, digital world. Metaverse was recently touted by Zuckerberg as facebook's planned virtual world. And it all looks so cringeworthy and creepy to me all at once." Thanks for explaining.

You'd be surprised the effect of even bog standard VR in this era. I tried it and I could have sworn I felt things that weren't even there. And things will get way more advanced.

"No. VR will never be that realistic. " People used to say computer graphics would never be realistic. Now they can be used in films in ways that you never even notice they have been. By the time my kids are my age, it could be that realistic. It's the method of interaction that will always let it down.

ToyStory level graphics used to take up to 30 hours per frame to render. Within 20 years they were able to be surpassed in real-time.
