Which would be easier?

A person who’s only ever had one of the first cars made (think crank handle on the front), trying to operate a new car

Or

A person who’s only ever had experience of a new car, trying to operate the old car?

Depends if they’ve got an understanding of how things work, if not I guess they’d both be pretty stuck.

But the person trying to operate an old car would definitely be funnier, a twisted thumb from incorrect starting handle technique is worth watching

Thats what spoiled the remake of War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. The line were they say they left the tripods they 10000 years ago and have come back to use them . Not possible to understand how something so old would work now or us trying to understand how advanced the future will be

The new car is easier to operate; as long as you’re handed the keys then you can find a button which says “Start” on the dashboard.

You’d be a looong time trying to figure out that you need to retard the ignition before you can crank the handle, let alone knowing how to do it.

I think the biggest disappointment would be the lack of outside horn to squeeze the rubber bulb

Surely the basic principles of driving are still the same? Other than how to turn on wipers/heating and the engine.

New car if its an auto.

But if not, there is a lot less things to learn in an old car and the basic principles are the same, so I'd say an old car would be easier to learn to drive properly.

Unless you don't care about all the 'things' and just want to make it move because you are being chased by zombies, then I'd say the new car.

This. Theres a lot less specialist knowledge and skills required now. Doing a double de-clutch gear shift on a modern car would be pointless but wouldn't cause a problem whilst trying to gear shift with a non synchronous gear box without knowing the technique and with the poor quality components used back then would quickly wreck the gear box for example.

Don't know about a twisted thumb but I do remember getting a broken wrist trying to start an old Standard Vanguard in the late 1950s.

New cars leave as little as possible to the driver so it would be easier.

I hate electronic handbrakes and auto stop/start with a passion.

I have this with old motorbikes.

OLD BIKE

Put in gear and disengage the clutch, 4 or 5 attempts.

Turn the petrol on

Back into neutral and tickle the carbs.

Find TDC (Top dead centre)

Put the key in the ignition and turn on.

Kick-start the bike without breaking your leg. 2-3 attempts usually.

NEW BIKE

Put key in ignition and turn on.

Press starter button.

Oh crikey, I'm not sure. Would people who have only had new cars manage with the cho-ke? (It wouldn't let me type the word properly) How many times would they struggle to start it or flood the engine.

But then some of these new cars are complicated. I remember a few years ago being asked to move a vehicle, I sat for absolutely ages looking for where I put the key, no one told me I just need the key anywhere in the car with me and just press the button.

I hired a car a while ago and couldn't figure out how to start it as it had no where for the key.

I had to press the brake or clutch and a button on the dash at the same time (or something like that). Had to get the person from the rental company to show me.

Knowing and figuring out how the mechanics in a car work is a lot easier than figuring out the electronics.

I think a young person would struggle working out how to operate an older car. My (in my 20's) Ren 5 GT Turbo had a manual ch*ke (fab won't allow the word) & so many other quirks. Took me a while to figure out how to operate my current Tesla.

Old using new. There are whole departments now designed around making things more ergonomic and intuitive. I have no knowledge on it but I can imagine the initial car designs being absolute chaos

Ummmmmmm, I can NAME a Bieber tune. I don't like it, but I can. And I was brought up with a white whirly-dial phone until I was about 11 or 12 and we got a push button one with a fax machine

Well I can share first hand with you here because I have both old and new!

The new one has almost every conceivable mod con you could wish for. It’s a dream to drive

The old one and we are talking 1960 has no power steering, it’s cute and small but not a tootle around car it prefers to be run around 50-60mph. It’s has a full leather interior and burr walnut dash but it has to be kept clean, it’s a show car. Most garages wouldn’t entertain it as it’s proper old mechanics and parts are very hard to come by. It was my Dads pride and joy and was passed to me….
