This …..

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro are among some of the world leaders that will not attend the summit in person.

Without these countries sending at least a representative what’s the use ?

Whilst there are no doubt many well intentioned people attending, there are others who are literally just there to show face..

As with global conflict as a race we fail to learn the lessons of past events I am sadly under no illusions other than this will be yet another talking shop where grandiose plans will be unveiled and later on pushed aside by many nations..

Mother nature is any stoppable force and we look to be on a path to really messing up the futures of those to come..

I’m worried that Boris has jumped on the bandwagon. I’m also worried at the change of rhetoric and the scaremongering that’s going on.

I am sorry to say that those who rule the world are all too old and self interested to view climate change as a threat to themselves. Thus, they will only pay lip-service to the people calling for action whilst ensuring social media denies the effect of their inaction as they and their financial backers remain happy and rich for the rest of their natural life.

As a consequence climate change is inevitable. In 75 to 100 years, long before it becomes too hot for humans to survive the heat, vast and ever increasing areas of the world will become unable to sustain their populations and the mass migrations of millions of desperate people will start.

These migrants will be resisted at the man made borders of habitable lands by people with guns. Then the migrants will get guns and all out war will ensue. Eventually, as the habitable lands shrink inexorably to nothing, humanity will annihilate itself but the planet will continue just fine.

In time the survivors of this cataclysmic event, like the cockroaches and tardigrades, will meet and comment how peaceful it is without those bloody humans. And evolution will start again.

Its one big shite show pretending that they care but not a huge amount has changed in the last 26 years and probably won't in the next 26 . I do wonder how much damage is done with all the delegates flying and driving around the world to all these meetings each year

I often hear this argument, usually leveled at people like Greta. There were 4.3 BILLION air passengers in 2018. That doesn't include freight or military flights. The impact made by each delegate is very small and a price will worth paying if it results in policy changes that have the potential to do far more good than the carbon cost of a few flights. Its a bit like complaining about a surgeon wasting a bit of the patients blood as they operate to stop them bleeding to death from a stab wound. The little bit of blood lost in surgery isn't the problem, the problem is the big fuck off gaping hole that needs fixing.

Sadly, I think a lot of this will come true - and provably a lot sooner than 75 - 100 years.

I totally agree. It is quite churlish to moan about how these world leaders got here if their presence brings about a real way forward.

There is close onto 30000 delegates from those countries attending also. What happened to zoom.

Far more can be acheived in one on one conversations over a coffee than in hours of internet screen time.

I just hope they actually do something this time. But I will not hold my breath.

"Will family planning be on the agenda ? "

It should be. Population size is the elephant in the room. The problem is our financial systems are based around continuous sustained growth. That requires a growing population. Obviously this cannot continue indefinitely but a forced population crash brought about by climate induced famine has to be a far worse scenario than a planned economic slow down.

I must admit, i have no faith in COP26 to deliver anything in any meaningful way that will actually stop global warming. History over the last 30 years or so shows us ALL governments will ALWAYS look for ways not to deliver on what they promise. You only have to look at the shit show of carbon offsetting to know that.

Plus of course the biggest carbon producer isn't at COP26 and has no intention of reducing it's carbon output, in fact, it's increasing it quicker than others are reducing theirs.

I think the idea behind the conference is good however the very fact this one conference is emitting more pollution than Scotland normally does in an entire year kinda makes me think it's counter productive.

hopefully something comes of it, but the cynic in me thinks not, less talk more action, oh and have you seen the news the uks co2 emisions are less than 10 years ago, so we are doing something right, just need to convince the other countries to do the same, shame the worst poluting countries wont

COP26 is a summit about climate and doing something about it.

So they fly several hundred delegates and world leaders to Scotland, surely if they wanted to save the planet a teams meeting might have been better???

Ever wonder what we used to do with plastics before selling it to poorer countries, that have no means or proper management of getting rid of it other then dumping it in the sea?

Ever wondered how the governments can make more revenue? Green tax.

Pushing an agenda

Don't forget to throw a few celebrities (Non-politicians) into the mix from royalty to Sir David Attenborough and Mark Carney. Because sheepeople can't think for themselves.

You know how at the start of Covid there were all these companies "popping up" offering support services to help governments with their covid-responses ?

Well a government alone cannot resolve climate-change.

But it can bung a few billion to PFI's who can "do something" and in turn make the government look good.

That's already started and wheels are in motion.

More importantly, investors in the traditional oil-based industries are looking at the growth potential (and government cash) these new Kids On The Block are going to get hosed with, and I suspect many of the old guard (who underpin Pensions, etc) are going to get completely hosed (along with the pensions that are linked to them).

It's intentions are good, but since most of these leaders are influenced by people who don't want this to go ahead it feels off.
