SNOWFLAKES...

So, the Weather's turning, winter's coming...

I love the snow, especially getting out on the board, been far too long.  But it's fascinating stuff, some fun facts about snowflakes....

• The world’s largest ever snowflake found to date was 38 centimeters wide and 20 centimeters thick! This snowflake occurred at Fort Keogh, Montana, USA on 28 January 1887.

• For snowflakes to form the temperature must be below 0°C

• Snowflakes actually start as tiny ice crystals that form from water vapor that freezes in the atmosphere.

• The size of a snowflake depends on how many ice crystals connect together.

• Each snowflake is made up of about 200 ice crystals.

• Snowflakes always have six sides.

• There is no scientific proof that no two snowflakes aren’t exactly alike.

• On average snowflakes fall from the sky at 3-4 miles per hour.

• Snowflakes are not actually white but clear.  Snow looks white because of the way the light reflects off of the ice crystals.

• Snowflakes didn’t always look white.  When coal was used widespread in factories and homes a lot of coal dust traveled through the air.  The coal dust was absorbed in the clouds and when it snowed it often looked gray from the air pollution.

• Watermelon snow is snow with algae growing on it.  The algae is a reddish color.  It is mostly found in the Canadian Rockies.

• The most snow to fall in a 24 hour period was 76 inches in Silver Lake, Colorado in 1921.

Anyway...

What is your favourite weather? and what useless factoids do you have?

Chams or Socials

I like all seasons for different reasons but we had a winter wedding - it didn’t snow, and it wasn’t cold like we expected. Sod’s law

.

I like thunderstorms. Sitting inside and listening to them raging outside, being unexpectedly caught in one and that brief moment when the world lights up following the low, grumbling anticipation. Snow is okay. Better in Scotland.

Excellent shout Meli, As much as it's not the same as the real thing, I have been known to put thunderstorms on YouTube as I go to bed to help sleep (I like 'rain on a tent' too )

Autumn! I love it! The smell, the colours, the crinkly leaves the random weather, it is amazing. And a good excuse for thick tights, boots and knitwear

Wirral.

Autumn for me. The colours of the leaves; the crisp air on a sunny morning; that delightful nip in the air that makes you catch you breath. Love it x

I've always enjoyed extremes of weather, even when I was flying. I think it's being so close to the raw power of nature. Although I'm pretty much grounded now, I still like being out in it.

I love the snow I’m

Hoping it’ll snow in 3 weeks when I’m away in Norway…

I love a storm, particularly when I'm sat cosy by a big window watching it (with a cup of tea). I think the snow is beautiful and it's exciting when it happens, but it eventually becomes annoying and slushy and slippery and I inevitably end up on my arse.

I thought a snowflake was a he or she who has an inflated sense of uniqueness, an unwarranted sense of entitlement, or are overly-emotional, easily offended, and unable to deal with opposing opinions...

I love summer so I can spend most of my time naked and sunbathing.

I also love driving in wintery conditions.
