Most of us will have had it, its pretty horrid I think we can all agree.

Has anyone else carried on suffering in silence because of the FEAR of going to the dentist??????

My jaw is currently that sore and swollen I cant put my teeth together but the thought of going to the dentist is somehow worse.

I understand i used to be so scared of the dentist as well.

Try beyoundfear

A website for people like us, they have dentists who understand and take there time and from my experience are very gentle.

Honestly i wouldn't let them put anything other than the mirror in my mouth to start with, without some for off drugs to knock me out

Best of luck

I know just what you mean, though admittedly I don't think I'm quite as scared as you sound to be. I recently had to be booked in for a 1hr session deep clean and filling. I really wasn't looking forward to it. Mostly due to the expected pain I'd have to go through. I decided to think of pain in a similar way to how I would if doing bdsm style play....work through it and welcome it almost as a kind of pleasure.

To be honest that itself didn't really work, but the fact my mindset was different made it a lot easier to get through.

I'd encourage you to be brave and get it sorted...can only get worse.

Good luck, I'd love to hear how you get on!

Thanks for your advice lovely people, its probably the worst its ever been and sleeping isnt much of a option because my whole face is so sore. Looks like a purely liquid diet until I get it sorted.

I have a dentist phobia took me 10 years to eventually have my wisdom tooth out even after 3 absesses bursting , I got nerve up as the last one was so painful then when they said it had to come out once antibiotics had worked . I did go to the doctors and asked them for something to help as I was panicking she prescribed me 2 diazepams to take half hour before going in

I left a hole in my tooth until I nearly overdosed on painkillers. If I knew how easy it would be once I went, I wouldn't have left it so long. Get sedation it's amazing, just wake up and it's all done!

Try to remember that the more you put it off the worse it will be so better to get it done. I know it's not easy to conquer fears but if you're really that scared they can refer you to have to fixed under general. Try to at least get in and let them have a look.

I’m getting fearful of going to the dentist due to my recent experiences the past few years at various different dental practices.

My experiences have been that they either don’t use anaesthetic or not enough. I’m getting right pissed off with it.

I had two fillings after being in lockdown and unable to see a dentist for 2 years. The lecture I had you would have thought I’d stran*led a swan with my barehands in front of them.

When I was a teenager I had a real fear of the dentist so I wouldn't go. That was until the mother of all toothaches one weekend.

Monday morning and I faced the inevitable. The neglect of my teeth through my teenage years was laid bare: I ended up with 4 extractions, two crowns and all the rest filled. Now I go regularly, most recently last week.

Look after your teeth, you can't turn the clock back.

I had a terrible fear of dentists when I was young after having a very bad reaction to gas when having some teeth out. I never went back until I was 40 when I had no choice after getting an abscess.

I went private and it's been the best decision of my life. I got everything fixed, (took a while as I had 3 broken teeth as I still have my wisdoms, and I told them I was a very nervous patient - and highly embarrassed about the state of my teeth). Maybe because they were nice, or because it was private and I was paying, but they were REALLY gentle and understanding with every procedure. I now go every three months for a hygienist appointment and every six months for a dental check up. I have no fear what so ever. That is such a relief. I just done a whitening course which means I was there more than I needed to and no anxiety.

You can't avoid not going to the dentist. It's not easy to start but it forces you there eventually. You do have my total sympathies OP.

My dentist is a gentle one, I wouldn't go for years but when I moved to where I am now I found the best dentist I have ever known

The relief you feel after you’ve been and the pain is gone is worth it all OP. Have you got a regular dentist? One that takes time to chat to you and put you at ease or at very least refer you elsewhere for help with fears etc.

Don’t keep suffering. If your face is swollen it sounds like an infection has started and you may need antibiotics. Infections make the pain worse, so if you get that sorted it will help.

Contrary to my moan in my post further up, there ARE good dentists out there. Ibuprofen is better for tooth pain is something my dentist told me as it helps with nerve pain and inflammation.

I'm terrified. I take my kids and just being in the places makes me tense up. I haven't seen a dentist in many years

Ive got a number to ring a emergency dentist at 10, hopefully they can atleast tell me what the hell has gone wrong, its more my jaw than my tooth, right at the back where my teeth finish, it feels like ive got shards of glass in there when I try to put my teeth together. Wish me luck, my hearts already beating out of my chest just thinking about it.

I’ve somehow taught myself to tune out from this sort of thing.

Which is handy, because I need a root canal

Oh and please explain your fears to the dentist.

It’s really common and they do understand.

I was just about to say the same xx If they know you’re scared they can be prepared too. I had a lovely dentist but he’s retired & the new lot just aren’t the same. I currently have an abscess & can’t get seen until Wednesday.

Glad you managed to get it sorted. I used to hate the dentist but realized it's much better to get it seen to than suffering for ages. I had an abscess as a result of a tooth infection and had to get a root canal. It was uncomfortable but much better than the pain I was feeling. Hopefully those antibiotics will help completely sort it without need for further treatment.

Me.. years ago.

And then I had the most horrific toothache. I couldn’t eat, sleep, think.

All I did was pace up and down my kitchen over and over in silence until painkillers numbed the pain enough.

Any pain Iv ever felt in a dentist chair has been nothing compared to that toothache.

I’m now having some minor cosmetic work done on my teeth and I barely flinch at walking into the dentist office.

Glad it’s sorted.

I’m absolutely terrified of the dentist, even tho my dentist is amazing and so good with me, I will still only go if in an absolute emergency! I recently had an abscess and refused to go, even tho I was in agony for three weeks! It annoys me that I’m like this, but the fear is real Miss pc

Trust me when you’ve got really really bad toothache that takes over every thought you have…you’ll go to the dentist.

When I had dry socket after a back tooth out once , if I’d have had a gun I’d have shot myself!
