"Definitely sounds as if it needs to go into the garage,if the noise is that loud , good luck OP" Thanks! I have heightened sensory sensitivity, especially to sounds and this sound would probably be for anyone else. I was curious whether anyone could recognise an obvious cause for such an effect. I didn't appreciate driving through the 60mph roadworks on the M6, from Cheshire through Staffordshire yesterday

"Off balance wheel? Xx" Thanks! It's easy to hit bumps that are everywhere, that I assume might cause that.

"Have you tried turning the music up? I’ve had quite a few cars that have all died a mysterious death but turning the music up when hearing an off putting sound really helps. " Sticking your fingers in your ears works too but bloody hard when it comes to steering!!!

"Have you tried turning the music up? I’ve had quite a few cars that have all died a mysterious death but turning the music up when hearing an off putting sound really helps. " This is exactly how I drive! Strange noise coming from the car? Nope, music up loud and all is well again

"Start easiest first. Roof bars or bit of trim out of place. Frequently whistle till you hit 60 then noise moves up out of normal range as vibrate faster. I do hope this is not another tow bar question (shudders) " Thanks. No shudders needed on this 1 - I have no tow bar I had a new wheel a couple of months ago and the ACC stopped, after a little damage from a puncture. Perhaps it's loose trim on that? I don't know much about cars but think there's a sensor on the front of the car and I assume something near wheels. 55mph is fairly good but hit 60mph and I dislike it. Over 60 is fine, as it's gone to a higher pitch that's more pleasant. There's higher volume of other driving noises at higher speed, so they could displace it, maybe.

"*sucks air through teeth* sounds expensive that! Could just be a wheel bearing starting to go or something, don't ignore it though, get it looked at ASAP." Not in that colour.

"Off balance wheel? Xx Thanks! It's easy to hit bumps that are everywhere, that I assume might cause that. " It there any vibration or just noise? If it's noise then maybe bearing, vibration then balance. If had 3 tyres, a wheel and a bearing go from fucking pot holes. English roads are almost 3rd world xx

"Fan belt possibly, wheel bearing even a bearing in the gearbox or axle diff (if you have rear wheel drive), drive shaft. Could even be electric fan on radiator making noise when it kicks in at a certain temp. Numerous things really. Pretty much depends on car you drive as well. Don't waste time here waiting for all the answers. Best to get checked & soon as most importantly you want to make sure it's safe. " Yikes! Thanks too. I'm going to get it booked in, after yours and others' feedback. I'd hoped it was something obvious and simple, plus recognisable to car experts. Fallen, stuck leaves under the bonnet, or something silly.

I didn't appreciate driving through the 60mph roadworks on the M6, from Cheshire through Staffordshire yesterday " ^0mph? You are spoilt. It was 50mph on the Milton Keynes to Northampton stretch of the M1, not too long ago. That's a painful drive. Especially in that cash starved camera obsesses, speed display sign desert, called Northants.

"If your cruise control has stopped working too I'd suggest it's something more than "just some junk" because your car knows something is wrong. Take it to a garage and get someone to actually investigate it, it's better than a hack fix which might just mean it has a worse, total failure later on. LvM" Thanks! The ACC was a predecessor by some weeks, which I was happy to put up with doing without. I thank you for your advice and point though and will get it checked.

"If it was a wheel bearing it wouldn't stop making a noise after 60mph! Would be constant and worse the faster you go! What sort of sound isit?? Squeaky?? Vibration sound??" It's a high pitched squeal, for want of a better word. It just occupies a rough 10mph speed band. When driving faster, the overall driving sounds are comfortable to hear again.
