There are some esoteric German films that are well worth looking at; the most horrific war film about the Einsatzgruppen in eastern Europe, who were enacting Adolf Schickelgruber's Lebensraum policy of eastward expansion is a film called Come and See.

Many of the actors had to have psychotherapeutic intervention afterwards because of what they were required to do to achieve cinematic realism.

I'm quite drawn to dramas in which a plot is followed during a backdrop of wartime, rather than mainly focusing on war itself, if you understand what I mean.

Films such as "the reader", "the railway man" & "the english patient" are examples of this that I rate highly.

I'm not sure if anyone's seen "overlord" - starts of as a WW2 film in which american soldiers are dropped in in europe in the middle of conflict (and takes an even more disturbing turn into a horror story as the film progresses..good film though.)

Watch it alone, or at least with someone who doesn’t talk during a movie. Turn the lights off and the volume up (and maybe the heating down) to immerse yourself in just how bloody intense it is

I haven’t watched many. I’m not a fan of seeing violence whether state ordered or not.

However when I was 16 I saw a local premiere of Saving Private Ryan at the cinema with the local veterans. I’ve never seen so many beautiful, noble men sob. It still haunts me.

So it gets my vote I guess.

Kelly's Heros get's my vote. For the more serious dramatic 'view' of war, I'd say 'Fury'

Didn't see 'Waltz with Bashir' in the thread (apologies if I missed it), that is SO worth a look, you won't be disappointed (so long as you can deal with animation and subtitles!)

During the filming of Memphis Belle one of the American owned B-17s crash landed and exploded (no-one hurt badly), they actually used the footage in the film (just before the anniversary dance)..

I love almost all of the films mentioned above, and never tire of seeing them.

For me it has to be

Bridge Too Far - a reasonably accurate story, in line with events, and depicts the many mistakes made. It also shows the Americans played a part, but it wasn’t all about them, and they didn’t save the day!

Zulu - a great jingoistic film, and love it, but if you know the history, completely bollocks and inaccurate as to who the real heroes of Roakes Drift were.

I've watched A LOT of war movies and they have made me realise how fortunate I've been not to have participated in one.

I seen many of those mentioned and they are good tools of learning (not experience!)

The real hero of Rorke’s Drift was Commissariat James Dalton. A former soldier who had significant combat experience, and masterminded the defence of the Krall. Bromhead and Chard, whilst current commissioned officers, were junior and inexperienced, and squabbled as to who was most senior and should be in command. - alluded to in the film.

This was a heroic action, but the only reason so many VCs were awarded was to deflect attention away from Lord Chelmsford’s failings at Islandwahna, and in whole campaign against Chetwayo. Queen Victoria would not even see Chelmsford on his return to England.

Dalton was originally missed off the initial VC list, as we was a former soldier, and not serving at the time (in those times the Commissariat controlled supply and we’re usually ex soldiers). It would have also highlighted the failings of the command. He was given his later when it came to light he hadn’t been awarded it in the initial tranche.

Henry Hook, depicted as an insubordinate shirker in the film, was actually the hospital cook and a good soldier - always contested by his family.

There are other inaccuracies too … even though the Americans weren’t involved!!

History lesson over - Still a great film.
