"What would you say, you want the money for them?"

I'd explain my shoes are not cheap and would like to know if the dog was known for destroying shoes.

If so why wasn't I warned I'd of kept them on.

Hopefully this would give them the idea to offer compensation.

Any responsible pet owner would either know so mitigate the issue by seperating shoes from dog or if it was a first time thing, apologise and offer to pay for any damage.

It's the same as if your kids decided to use your guests car as a chalkboard with keys

Not necessarily because having a dog who has chewed stuff in the past I know how picklesome pets can be. I might be annoyed but it wouldn't be a big deal. I tell people to put stuff up out of my dogs reach and if I visit a house with a pet I ask if they are likely to chew

I would mention it, but I would make light of the situation firstly to gauge the person's reaction. If they are embarassed and say they will reimburse you, you'd tell it's a genuine accident and they're good people, and I would brush it off. However if they joked about it too, kinda says alot about them and I'd never meet them again.

Either way I'd never get reimbursed for them.

Anything left where the dog can access it is a legal chew toy. Yes the dog shouldn’t have chewed them but you should also have considered where you left them

They way we think of it :-

Dog people tend to be friendly and caring as they spend a lot of time and love on their 'pets' / family, care and put a lot of effort in to maintaining a loving relationship, walking, feeding, cuddling, training, cleaning up after, etc.

Cat people are like Dog people but a lot lazier

People without pets like the illusion of order and perfection but are often cold at heart.

These are just generalisations of course

I don't think that's a fair comment. Not being a dog owner it wouldn't occur to me to do this. It's the owner's responsibility to say something.

I would say something but it would be along the lines of "Hey. What happened to my shoes?".

If the dog is known to do this I'd hope they'd tell me not to leave my shoes there although I'd probably ask if where I left them was ok.

Yes but it wouldn't occur to me to automatically think to put my shoes out of the way. I'm used to taking my shoes off in the hallway/ porch and leaving them.. not putting them up on a shelf or hiding them away. That isn't natural if you aren't used to being around dogs.

I’d definitely bring it up straight away.

I have dogs and have never had a pair of shoes chewed. Not even in puppyhood. It wouldn’t occur to me to not leave my shoes on the floor.

I dunno, I doubt I'd be wearing particularly fancy shoes and could probably pick up another pair exactly the same for under 50 quid so probably not a massive problem. I'd assume a responsible dog owner would be OK for paying for any damages caused by their 'fur baby' (ugh).

I do quite like dogs but I prefer them to be well-behaved if not trained. I used to go out with a girl who used to foster rescue dogs, some of which had some pretty odd behavioral traits including extreme separation anxiety. She would let them up on the bed when we were having sex and be like "just ignore the dog" - all well and good but it's a half a tonne of staffy/rottweiler cross that seems to be getting a little too turned on by what is happening nearby and then wants to start getting involved in the 'games'... :o

Erm, nope. I cannot maintain an érection under these circumstances

"Anything left where the dog can access it is a legal chew toy. Yes the dog shouldn’t have chewed them but you should also have considered where you left them

I don't think that's a fair comment. Not being a dog owner it wouldn't occur to me to do this. It's the owner's responsibility to say something.

You don’t know that dogs chew things?

Yes but it wouldn't occur to me to automatically think to put my shoes out of the way. I'm used to taking my shoes off in the hallway/ porch and leaving them.. not putting them up on a shelf or hiding them away. That isn't natural if you aren't used to being around dogs.

Your fault when they get chewed then

Is it fuck!? Irresponsible dog owners fault.

All the dog owners shoes would be at a height the dog can’t reach. If you haven’t followed suit then it’s your own stupidity and the shoes got what they deserved

How do you know this please? Did you see where the dog owners shoes were? You seem to know a lot about this incident.

Did you? How much do you know about it?

I haven't made assumptions about where any one's shoes have been put. "

You only have one persons side of the story though so have assumed the dog owner is at fault.

By the way, dog owners are liable for damage to another persons property in their home or a garden vehicle. Not on the owners property unless it can be proved that they were negligent.

"Probably wouldn't say anything. Make a joke out of it. Unless it was the guy himself who chewed them up.

Why though.

I'm genuinely interested as to why people think it should be made a joke out of because it's been brought up a few times on this thread.

I wouldn't hammer the person for something the dog did. It's just an unfortunate incident. Should I be demanding he puts the dog down? "

No one is saying about hammering anyone. The question is would you say anything? Yes. I would. And I wouldn't be joking and finding it funny. Unfortunate incident yes. But not amusing and not worthy of putting the animal down. Just not something I'd ignore.

I wouldn't mind the money. The question is how I am supposed to go home. Happy to borrow her footwear and return it later. But still kind of awkward to wear them in public transport. Maybe I should take buses instead of tube

"So if you want to someone’s house for a meet and the meet was fine but the persons dog chewed up your shoes so badly you had to bin them, would you say anything……"

I'd be very pissed of but wouldn't say anything. They should apologise and offer to pay for new shoes. If they didn't then I would never speak to them again.

Maybe it was a pact with the dog to get you to stay the night or as many days as it takes to get new shoes delivered

This is the sort of thing my pup would do. She’s already destroyed a pair of my shoes and my mums.

I’d tell visitors to Velcro their shoes to the bloody ceiling - it’s the only place they’d be safe from her!!

I would have said "Your dog has chewed my shoes to bits" then laughed.

I don't wear expensive shoes to meet anyone, so the cost would be minimal.

Next time I went I would take one of the shoes with me, and hide the ones I wear.

My dogs pick and choose what they chew.

A few days ago I came home to my paracetamol box ripped to shreds on the floor.

They usually only chew plastic or leather.
