Blatant sexism.

One of my ‘favourite’ memories of the late 80’s is walking alone down a long, narrow street towards a pub where I was meeting work colleagues in Preston.

A large group of young guys (looked like a rugby or football team on a night out) launched into a very loud, long and tuneful chorus of ‘get your tits out for the lads’! I very nearly turned around and went home again.

Going out with the money in your pocket and when it ran out, you went home not to a hole in the wall cash machine.

Alongside that I remember taking money out of the Bank because a lady who worked there knew my Mother. So she called her to tell her that I’d be calling in.

Winding back speedometer readings! Which was reasonably easy to get away with back then because, service history was never really seen as important, and online government web site to check MOT history had still yet to be invented.

My dad had a van in the early 80s. He kitted out the back of it with carpet and bean bags, for me and my sister. And there we’d play with our Sindy dolls as he drove. Can you imagine that now?!

Bicycle helmets really weren’t a thing.

Much less of a health & safety focus in general.

God, I loved my Sindy dolls and Sindy house.

And homophobia. Both were pretty much instutionalised and portrayed as such on TV: there were regular anti-gay jokes on TV, as well as an expectation that all that women wanted was to marry and have kids.

I got the cold shoulder from one of the few friends that I had, when I suggested that maybe a woman wanted a career and not just to stay at home with the kids.

Yeah, that went down well.

"Smoking in pubs.

Remember the yellowed ceilings and fowl stench of stale tobacco when you went in your local for a pint?

I can't say much though because I was a smoker back then so probably didn't mind it at the time "

I can remember the ceilings of double decker buses when you could smoke upstairs, graffiti written in the yellow nicotine stains.... Yuck!

2 questions though about the video player…

1) was it vhs or was it Betamax???

2) did it one where you put in the video at the front… or at the top and you had to push it down!!!

Loving all the Swap Shop, Tiswas, smoking on the top deck of busses et al memories. However the ages, including mine!, seem a little on the young side for memories of the 70’s and early 80’s!! Lol. Oh what fun had.

I remember going to the Boys Brigade 7 a-side football competition. Our leader had an estate car and the whole team (including 2 subs) were happily transported in it in a oner. Fantastic.

Toot and wave. Technically the early 90s but that’s almost the 80s right?

Just after passing our driving tests at 17 going out as groups of lads in our mates Ford Fiesta XRi (he had rich parents .. ) honking the horn and shouting out at any groups of girls we saw.

Absolutely cringeworthy looking back and definitely laddish and not just a little bit misogynistic too. Although surprisingly a high percentage of the girls liked it back in the day and many hook ups occurred as a result.

However looking back now I guess there would have been a lot that absolutely hated it or felt threatened by it but at the time it seemed just good fun through our naive perspective
