"Yes. Some fortunes make absolutely no sense at the scale of an individual. What would you do with 1 billion? Let alone hundred billions like some have. I think we completely lost sense of perspective with such numbers. Think about it that way: 1 million seconds is a little over 11 days; 1 billion seconds is over 31 years. Do you see the difference better?" You speak (type) sense

Bernard Arnault, France’s richest man and currently third richest man on the planet, is worth 155 billion dollars. The vast majority is shares, yes. But even if you were to consider that LVMH shares are illiquid (which they are not), 9 of these 155 billions are cash (estimation based on the dividends paid on the shares he owns, figures which are public since they are publicly traded companies). 9 billions is enough to sustain the most lavish of lifestyles for the rest of his days. So what difference do the other 146 billions make to him apart from a number in a book? Wouldn’t they be better spread equitably between all the employees of his industrial group many of which would probably benefit from an increase in their standard of living and feeding the real economy with it?

But I agree that tax avoidance should take priority and would already make a great deal of difference. Defining fair levels is more philosophical and a bit pointless if people don’t pay their share anyway.

In an ideal world, everyone would pay income tax, but at a much lower level than we do now. But I don't think it is in the interests of the government to clamp down on tax avoidance. And when Labour are in power, they seem incapable of doing it & insist on punitive tax rates for higher earners, thus creating tax exiles. Everyone pay their taxes at the same rate would be ideal.

You become a billionaire be making lots of others work hard and taking the rewards for THEIR hard work. I personally believe that nobody requires a million pound salary, but even at a million pounds a year (tax free) it would take a thousand years to become a billionaire. Cal

Through work I've met hundreds over the years that can work but can give a fuck to work as life is easy with a free coucil, housing association house, money coming in every week, they only pay part of the coucil tax with taxpayers money and quiet a few of them lie and lie to get a disaiblity benefit. To be vry CLEAR I an not refeering to the vast majority of genuine claminats fo all benefits. I am fucked off a bit where thos in the middle ie like the majority here i guess work, worked hard to get a pension eraly pension, still pay taxes, pay their road taxes, car insurance full coucil tax, pay a mortgage, and or pay rent etc pay their bills and are fucked if they are unwell and need a prescription EH about 10 pounds a prescription. Someone we know worked hard often 50 hours a week for many years, paid their mortgage had a nice house wife worked 40 to 50 hours and rarely had a holiday wanting their children to have a better life easier start and not be a burden on social housing so they could buy their own - both became very unwell and one is in a home and other will be there soon - cositng one of them 6k a month in the home - he is expected to pass away in a few months by the time they are gone house sold, there won't be anyhting left. I recall him saying if he lived in a rented proeprty they would have been better off as no worries about the coucil fitting new windows, new heating fixing the heating leaking roof etc. By all means ensure the bigger compaines do not evade taxes as like some very rich people but by chatting about taxing the rick often means fucking up people in the middle ie the ordinary tax payers Never forget the mother fuckers about 50 years ago in number ten were taxing people up to 99p in the pounds and many left the uk so where did that get us. Get the lazy bastards ie those that can work but dont want to to work as there are many jobs out there in many parts of the uk especially London that has a population of close to 9 mill i thing FYI, please do not try to misquote me as at no time I'm talking about the genuine claimants or taxpayers rich or otherwise.

Brilliant post I was invited to be a partner in some start-ups which my friends started. One of them is doing very well and he is super rich. When I said no to them, I was very well aware that working in a start-up means a lot of sacrifice and hard work. I am a 9-6 guy who prefers work life balance. I make decent money and I am happy with that. My friend who worked his ass off is super rich. I am happy for him. He deserves every bit of it. The whole idea that the rich got all their money without working hard is applicable only for the ones with only inherited wealth and not the ones who made most money themselves.

Many “loopholes” are tax breaks that were introduced to encourage people to do certain things, and many investors have their money in the uk because of leniency. Clamping down completely, in one step, would have a drastic impact on London in particular. And the big question when it comes to taxing the ultra-rich, is how to do so, as they have such mobility.

The “club” idea just feeds the fantasy of some hidden evil empire. And if those 20 simply gave away their wealth we would all have an equal standard of living? No we wouldn’t. And if we all had equal income or wealth globally, you do realise that that would mean a collosal cut for the average person in the uk, don’t you?

"It’s a matter of perspective. Visualising the obscenity of it is crazy. But look at it this way If you earned £5000/hr since the year 0 you would still fall short of Jeff Bezos’s fortune. The recent NI rise which despite being widely misreported as 1.25% rise was actually a 10% hike ie if you paid £2500 in NI your new amount is an extra £250 this will generate £12bn. If you mandated a one off 10% tax on all those with over £100mil in the UK that would generate £69bn and they wouldn’t even notice. " And how would you levy that “one off” tax? Billionaires are mobile, and am is their money. Such a tax grab would mean that the majority of them would disappear overnight and we would get no tax at all from them in future. When income tax went from 40 to 50 percent, one hedge find that I know well moved all of their asset managers to Switzerland. One firm, that you have probably never heard of, and that’s a loss of hundreds of millions per annum. This happens. Punishment / envy taxes backfire. Lower tax rates bring in more investment and more high earners, so more tax

"The sad fact is that for much of human history the majority have worked for the enrichment of the elite. It is more “visible” now because of the media outlets we have. I often think that modern life is like a twisted version of the matrix. The majority (billions of people) work to enrich the few (the billionaires). We have sleep-walked into a paradigm of rampant consumerism catalysed by “fear of missing out” (latter day “keeping up with the Jones”) Once you understand that you are a battery for billionaires you may realise that through your actions and behaviours you are the one (collectively) that has given them power. Only you can change it. Or wait for the iPhone 14, your choice. " The Matrix definitely works as an allegory of rampant consumerism. Most people know that the relentless acquisitive treadmill that we are on is a hollow simulacrum of a meaningful life but are too invested in it to step off.

Ive done exactly the same grafted my arse off yes im very comfortable and successful but it hasnt come easy. So again... why should i fall into labour's mentality & hand that to people who cant be arsed? Not just cant be arsed to work but living the easy life and most of the benefit cheats work on the side the odd day here and there cash in hand. These bastards are often better off the poor lot that work their arse off, work weekends rarely have time to spend with their family/kids, and hardly have anyhting left once mortgae/rents/bills paids. Yet the bastards that don't want to work, work on the side have nothing offically to their name build up debts for the good life and dont pay a penny. Please do NOT twist my comments as I'm not referring to the majority that are claiming benefits/housing/disability benefits for legitmate reasons." Exactly i grew up seeing people have nice cars, and go past nice houses ect yes its materialistic but whats wrong with wanting nice things. Thats the drive that made me strive for a enriched lifestyle. I could have gone down the route of quite afew i know 'dealing' & illegitimate gains but i wanted to succeed even if it meant working friday, sat nights to pay study fees while friends were out partying living the life and making so much more illegitimate cash during the week while my head was stuck in a book on mechanical physics

"Tax the rich until they're not rich any more. Do it on a global scale so they can't run away. No excuse for this level inequality. Great plan. Make it so that nobody has any incentive to work hard, open businesses, take risks, create jobs To be fair, you don't become a billionaire be working hard. You become a billionaire be making lots of others work hard and taking the rewards for THEIR hard work. I personally believe that nobody requires a million pound salary, but even at a million pounds a year (tax free) it would take a thousand years to become a billionaire. Cal ----- So, why does everyone not do that that, ie get others to work hard? Easier said than done thats why. Very few become wealthy starting from nothing, they usually have wealth to get them going in the first place. The bigger issue though, is the jump from running a successful business to becoming "super rich" is based around exploitation of the workers. Whether it is using foreign factories to create a super cheap workforce, or running their business with staff on Zero Hour contracts or Pseudo Self-Employment through the Gig Economy, it is all about maximising profit at all costs... There are plenty who have become wealthy starting from nothing. Look at the top 10 rich people now and you will see that around half of them were not millionaires to begin with. If you want to complain about exploitative business practices, you need to check with the relevant governments to see why they don't protect their people from it. Taxing the rich is not going to solve the problem. Anyway, what did Google or Microsoft do to exploit workers? They mostly run software business. Bill Gates has actually been one of the better Billionaires, investing most of his personal wealth in charitable causes. Google on the other hand are continually on the receiving end of lawsuits by mistreated morkers. Different thing really. Gates is an individual, Google is a company. " Yes... but Google isn't A Billionaire either.

"As an example, if we all shared in every penny Paul McCartney has we each would get around £12. What would we do with it? Most likely buy some unnecessary plastic object made in China. In the mean time many of the charities and businesses that benefit from Paul's investments would close and hundreds would be jobless or without support. The rich invest to provide jobs. There is a balance to be struck here. " Only Uk people are sharing Paul’s money then? Across the world’s population it’s more like 10p each.

"Are you in favour of taxing the ultra rich? " They are taxed. I’m in favour of existing taxes actually being implemented effectively
