Skip the final season, read the cliff notes. Save yourself hours of wasted time. The rest is very much amazing, though it does lose its wow factor after season 3 if I remember correctly.

I don't know if anyone had noticed but Dexter, like Game of Thrones and True Blood seemed to lose an edge when the sex content was toned down. Very much the American way, the violence is ok with advertising but sex is not. It wasn't that sex was integral to the plot and story lines. But it seems that there's a connection where the producers and writers sharp edges are blunted.

my daughter grew up with dexter.... although she has said her back up plan if she doesnt become a forensic scientist is that she will be a serial killer.. she is joking i think. But at a recent college interview she said so and said dexter was her inspiration
