Anybody able to suggest suitable flooring for a van please?

Hi we’ve got a transit size van which we use for delivering furniture.

It’s an ex builders van & has racking down one side.

When we got the van we put carpet in & around the racking, this was fixed using staples. The carpet is hardwearing but is starting to come up where we’ve slid heavy things on it, plus it’s getting dirty.

It’s now time to take the racking out as we need more space, this will leave a bare floor.

If we rip out the carpet & replace the whole floor with something new, any suggestions as to what we can use instead? Ideally it needs to be non slip, but still allow us to slide heavy things in if that’s possible. Did think about heavy duty non slip flooring as used im commercial kitchens, is there something more suitable, it needs to be able to be cleaned easily too?

Thanks in advance.

What about a bog standard lino instead of a heavy duty one? It will have a level of none slip, but not too much if you’re loading furniture and need to push items into place! If fixed down to the boards properly it won’t rip either!

Lino as suggested earlier don’t think it would be up for the abuse we’d give it, mats ax suggested seems a good idea, but it needs to be permanently fixed, not looking for something that comes out easily, just easily mopped or vacuumed??

Don't put rubber onto an aluminium floor, if the van has an aluminium floor. It will set up a galvanic reaction in the aluminium.

Just screw some 12mm ply down that way you can slide heavy things on it.

From my experience in Hotels, the non-slip heavy duty flooring used in Hotel and Hospitality kitchens, is extremely expensive and invariably is fixed in place with heavy duty adhesive. It's not a product to nail or secure into place; doing so could split it, then it will get worse.

Why don’t you look at laminate flooring. It’s reasonably resilient and can be kept clean too.

I'd go for commercial walkway composite vinyl, like they use in hospitals. It's also heat-mouldable. About £15-£20 per m2.

We've got 9mm ply in one of our work vans and checker plate in another. Both work really well as a sound, secure base.

"Diamond cut aluminium sheets "

Are these non slip, are they like carpet tiles or does it come on a roll, where should I look?

I feel we need one complete piece if that makes sense, no joins to come apart etc. Thanks.

Cost effective solution maybe to consider either a laminate or vinyl flooring as a good choice...!

Is this glued down, could I buy in one piece? Thanks.

If I thought we could get something substantial, I’d consider this, think it needs to be heavy duty or for commercial use, as ones we’ve had at home tear easily. Cheers.

"Diamond cut aluminium sheets "

Is that the same as checker plate somebody was referring to?

Most welcome, I’m sorry I couldn’t help be more specific in terms of listing spec. etc. However, I have seen a few vans decked out with laminate which seems a popular choice (is something to consider).

Birch plywood is ideal for van flooring. Metsä Wood plywood products with a long life span are the right solution for van flooring. Birch plywood has excellent strength properties and impact resistance, which makes it especially suitable for heavy-duty van flooring.

Lifes departure lounge NN9 Northamptonshire East not West MidlandsMidlands

My suggestion would be aluminium chequer plate.

Look for metal stockists in you area, some will offer a cutting service or be able to recommend one.

Usually comes in 2.4 x 1.2 sheets.

Not sure of prices these days as it is 20 years since I retired from doing van conversions.

Thanks everyone racking is now out & carpet put under where the racking was. Will look at other options, but for now carpet is quiet & does hold things in place.

We've got a camper, not a work van, but used 12mm ply with Altro flooring on top, its heavy wearing and often used in hotels etc like you're after, big range of colours if I recall, would recommend
