Is celebrated throughout the month of October and in true forums style I thought I'd start a tread to appreciate inspirational black people throughout history.

I'm going with Bayard Rustin. He was an African American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. As a result of being openly gay Rustin suffered abuse and violence at the hands of those he was protesting for as well as those who opposed his beliefs. Highlighting that there is hate and

prejudice in every walk of life but only a rare few that will stand up for themselves and others to fight against it.

The Tuskegee Airmen. Inspirational, willing to fight and prove themselves for a country that largely despised them.

A powerful story.

I was watching an interview a little while back on Some morning TV show where Ben Shepherd was interviewing Doreen Lawrence. She was so calm and composed and talked so much sense even when the interviewer was throwing up stories about the George Floyd trial and riots. She managed to stay on topic and not get drawn into his foolishness. I nearly fell through the floor when Ben Shepard made a comment about the anniversary of Stephens death comming up in the next few weeks but flippantly said "I don't remember the date"

It's a shame it takes such tragic circumstances for people's lights to shine.

I’m currently reading Brit(ish) by Afua Hirsch. Lots of valid points that I’d never considered before. I think it’s just as important to be aware of the experiences of the ordinary people as well as celebrating the achievements of the inspirational ones (which is obviously still a good thing to do!)

I watched Subnormal on iPlayer too, several inspirational characters on there who campaigned for change x

Often it is everyday people that make the change. You can have a voice but you need many ears to listen.
