When you say they had zero competition ... they did, but then stood out so much they made it look that way. But you don’t like them, that fine. Not much favourite bands bu any means but they are absolute giants in terms of what they achieved and their influence on music.

The beatles had a short time frame where they were actually good. And that was when they were essentially making American blues/ rock more palatable to a white british audience. Then they started falling out, John and Paul's egos went off the scale. They sidelined George (a brilliant songwriter), then they all got off their tits and started singing about walruses and submarines and shit.

Some say they're the greatest band of all time. I cannot believe that music peaked in the late 60s when so many new genres, some of them not even possible then, have appeared since.

I'm not going to deny that they were popular and influential but I find most of their songs to be mediocre. There are some truly great songs but also some that I can't stand listening to. I don't like the production of their albums either, preferring to listen to covers of their best songs. They often work pretty well in different genres.

It seems like every singer ever recorded has been pilloried. But most of us agree on Oasis being the nadir of modern music.

It would be interesting if folks had not only criticised but said who they thought was good.

For me Oasis and Pretenders were awful singers whereas Pink, George Michael, Stefani Germanotta and Randy Crawford were/are great; to name but a few.
