Developing a Website

Has anyone here gone through the process of having a website developed (or doing it themselves? Any web developers here?

I'm looking for some advice or tips on what kind of questions to ask a potential web developer.

The website will be pretty basic, I would think. A landing page; a portal to process donations; a blog space; a portal to capture questions and feedback; and a portal to capture contact details.

Any and all feedback is welcome as I'm just trying to build an idea of what to ask. Even unhelpful comments are welcome, as long as they are a bit of craic!

Definitely all to see examples and also price structure is important.

Are you going to want something that is updated often? Sometimes this will come at an additional cost

If it's a basic website I would do it yourself. My best experience has been with WordPress, there's a huge range of themes (design templates) and plug ins (functions) and a global support community to ask any questions you have.

hmmm, I'm not sure about that. When you say something that is updated regularly, do you mean the features of it or the content?

I would envisage the features remaining the same for a couple of years at least.

Nice one. I'll check it out.

I've heard of it but I was probably just being a bit lazy.

Would you happen to know, actually, I'm looking at a buying a domain name and on the registration site they are offering a 'Host your own wordpress website and email' with 200GB bandwidth and 10GB diskspace.

Is that worthwhile or is it better to sort the hosting separately?

Even just the wording can come at a cost

You can use free WordPress on any host so it really depends on your requirements and budget.

I don't think I answered your question! It's usually easier to buy domain and hosting together and you can still transfer the domain if you move host in the future.

For search purposes, regular updating is important

The big template based website like SquareSpace offer non-profit templates and within that you can select your features e.g.:

- Sell online courses

- Sell on-demand videos

- Sell services

- Sell memberships

- Market myself or my business

- Promote a physical business

- Sell products

- Promote an event or project

- Collect donations

- Offer a contact form

- Publish a blog or other media

- Build community

- Showcase work/expertise

- Get appointments

I think that that list covers you however there is always limitations using templates as not all the features will be available or they don't quite work how you'd like in terms of the user interface or journey from page-to-page. The upside is that you don't have to revert continually to a web developer for minor changes as they will charge you.

My advise is get the website up with 80% of the features and pay someone else do the 20%.

I hope this helps.
