"It's funny (well not funny, but couldn't think of a better word), but people tend to assume that war vets are old people. I think people forget that we have had had a lot of "modern" wars, and that there are war vets in their 20's and 30's. Where I grew up the army was one of two choices for lads leaving school, the other being the steel works. Consequently my best friend is a war vet at the age of 33. One of my closet friends is dead as a consequence of the Iraq war. Many of my other friends and acquaintances have also been massively by war in the last 10/15 years. I feel for those, young and old who have seen what most of us only see in films. " I was 21 when I went on my first tour, and by no means the youngest, quiet a few 18/19 old in the battalion. Makes a man of anyone that goes though it's amazing how fast someone can mature

"The first gulf war and northern ireland seem to off been forgotten, there was no help for heroes or anything back then! I was medicaly discharged, my prize for being the only one to survive a blue on blue with an a10 tankbuster! " I wouldn't say northern ireland has been forgotten but yes, the first gulf I'll agree with, sorry to hear that, been in a blue on blue situation myself with a yank apache, wasn't very nice, lucky no deaths but 3 injured

"I really dont want to sound disrespectful here, I think all you soldiers should get every bit of help you need. However the days of conscription are long gone. It is your choice to join the army knowing there is a bloody good chance you are going to see active service? Dont get me wrong, its truly heartbreaking when I hear on the news that yet another soldier has lost his life. However I think people deal with awful situations and experiences differently. My ex husband was a para and was in Kosovo amongst other places. I asked him if it ever bothered him what he had seen and he said no. As I say, no offence is intended, I think you are all doing and have done great jobs and deserve to be well looked after xx" I was in 3 para, I joined up at 18 knowing what I was goin into, tbh even though I seen bad things, going to Afghanistan was such a good life experience, I was never effected by anything I seen well log term anyway, obviously when you see one of your friends die there is a huge impact when it happens, I just guess people have different coping mechanism

H4H might have started during afghan conflict as the conflict was brought into peoples homes on television and through people seeing casualties coming home particulary through the IED'S & the limbless, but H4H is for all war veterans.

"Yes I witness that one, there was also the one where the door inside a compound got smashed by something really hard, no reply after a few warning the general wa unleashed into the door, turned out the very loud smash was the donkey kicking the door lol " pmsl...Don't think I heard about that one before. We had a couple of instructors from Sandhurst come out on patrol with us once. We found ourselves in a pretty well planned contact (A pair of DSHKE's & PKM's set up on a rooftop). Once the dust had cleared the toff's were nowhere in sight and not answering their PRR's. We found them hiding in a fucking doorway 200m away, neither has fired a shot!...lol

"Have we got many war veterans on here? I've been to Bosnia and the gulf in the 90's how many people are on here? Any other PTSD suffers? Is like some friends who I can talk to! " I would hazard a guess there are quite a few but most of the ones who have issues wouldn't want to post it on an open forum. If you are having problems and can't get help from your local health authority contact your old regiment to see what help is available as there are plenty of support groups around.
