Why? Why does she need to smile? She is bright and has achieved more in her young lifetime than you or I most likeky.

Why do you expect her or anyone else for that matter to smile or lighten up?

She has Asperger's syndrome. I don't know all the symptoms of Asperger's but I think the seriousness is related to it.

Greta Thunberg is on the autistic spectrum. What the OP is interpreting as "a face like a smacked arse" or "look[ing] like she swallowed a wasp" is probably the "flat affect" common to autistic and other neurodiverse people. It's one of the reasons why neurotypical people so strongly dislike autistic people *on sight* – see the 2017 paper 'Neurotypical Peers are Less Willing to Interact with Those with Autism based on Thin Slice Judgments' by Sasson, Faso, Nugent et al.

So yes, this thread is ableist as well as misogynistic. Good work Fab!

A young woman tries to take on an effort to save humanity.

But she's insufficiently ornamental for men.

So I guess it doesn't matter. She should smile more, that's the most important thing.

A woman/girl doesn't have to smile sweetly, just because that would look more fun and pretty.

Her face is utterly irrelevant to what she's trying to achieve.

Her looks are irrelevant.

I would rather have a genuine smile from a person than have someone smile after being told they need to smile by a man who doesn't like the womans face.

Maybe when she is giving her speeches she doesn't think she has anything to smile about.

So you argument is to give a man a pass because that's who he is? THIS is just one of the ways people enable men to go on and abuse women:

1. It's just banter

2. Women should be pleasing to us

3. You're uptight, get over yourself

It all adds up to the bigger narrative we've had to swallow our whole lives.

Picking on a very young woman with Asperger's who has made an impact across the World is just another way of saying shut up.

You've noticed her.

Young people across the globe have been school striking, making the news.

Adverts now actively promote her message.

Politicians want to meet her.

The UN invites her to speak.

The news reports what she says.

I don't think this needs to be a thread debating Gretas impact on the world. This needs to be a thread calling out male 'banter' which is derogative towards young women and how they look. Commenting on them being something that you would prefer to be. Not right.

It's creepy, outdated and irrelevant.

I call for it to be removed.

It's incredibly telling that a young woman who has had so much impact, is judged on the way she looks

"I don't think this needs to be a thread debating Gretas impact on the world. This needs to be a thread calling out male 'banter' which is derogative towards young women and how they look. Commenting on them being something that you would prefer to be. Not right.

OP, this really is a sad fail of a thread...

You asked some questions about how Greta travels and her impact. And I could tell you that she always tries to choose the most environmentally mode of travel, if she can, even if it means longer travel time.

I could tell you how she started on her own, as a child, with weekly school strikes to raise awareness and she inspired a global movement.

And yes, as others have said, she is on the spectrum.

But all of this is irrelevant because it really boils down to that it is just a misogynistic comment to tell a woman, any woman, to smile more.

"Oh come on peeps you know busman is a satirist. Many guys feel creepy about her after years of horror flicks and smart kids with a grudge. Ok she has a condition. Many of us do as well.

She ain’t saved shit but fair play she has had a go.

I bet most of you have queued for patrol lately rather than say oh well I’ll do as Great would like and buy a donkey!

Sorry, but I don't accept the argument of satire or banter as a cover for misogyny.

It's incredibly telling that a young woman who has had so much impact, is judged on the way she looks "

Quite.

It doesn't matter what she does, she's not attractive enough. So the world continues to turn, apparently

Nearer than you think

Given everything that's been in the news this week, the start of this thread was a bit "tone deaf".

(Btw, OP, she has an awesome sense of humour. Her putdowns on Twitter of arrogant older men in positions of power are superb.)

Another term to put down women who have a strong opinion. Have you noticed the men who have commented too? Are they Karen's?

Whilst you're suggesting not clicking if we don't like it.. How about you don't bother to comment and just block the 'karens'?

Nope... I think it's important to challenge misogyny.

The more often such inappropriate behaviour is challenged, the better.

I took it as him saying she needs to smile more, not about her looks. Probably not your best thread op and poorly worded maybe but I think we all know the kind of thing you’re accusing him of isn’t really his style.

Sometimes I will avoid threads like this but I've reached the stage where I feel that not calling out everyday sexism and misogyny is enabling it.

Serial thread starter, yes.

Poster of all thoughts in his head, yes. Sometimes thoughts should stay where they start. This is possibly one of them.

In which case, you may be an unwitting part of the everyday thoughtless sexism we ladies suffer on a regular basis.

You should treat this thread as educational.
