"Compliments can be given for all sorts of reasons... and clearly on fab most of us take them with a bucket of the old salt. But when you compliment do you always mean what you say? Do you find something specific and compliment that? Or are you a general complimenter? And what's the best compliment you remember receiving? Did it mean more because of who it was from? " I'm a specific complimenter. Things I notice about people. And yes, I always mean it I was once told by a gynae Dr that my vagina was "perfect". I'll take that as my best compliment ever! "One of the exercises my therapist gave me was to gracefully accept compliments. I do give them, usually about something specific. The best compliment I received was a group of colleagues arranging a This Is Your Life type event for me. It was a lovely and very touching surprise. " I'm unbelievably bad at accepting compliments.... I'm usually convinced they've got the wrong person I find specific compliments tend to mean more to give and receive. Although sometimes there is just too much general awesomeness to pick out one thing. And I absolutely love that! You must have been thrilled!

"I think the more specific or personal a compliment is the more it means. Nothing wrong with a general compliment but they have less impact. I was once told by a former employer that I was 'unbossable' - it was meant as a criticism but I cherish it as one of my favourite compliments. " I completely agree with the first.... and unbossable is absolutely a compliment!! How anyone could think it isn't I do not know....

"If I pay a compliment, I mean it As he said.. though I think most of the time as the OP says on here compliments are taken with a huge bucket of salt " They are. Absolutely. Because when you set up a new profile with no text or pictures and get 100 messages in a few minutes telling you "you're beautiful/amazing/just my type/random superlative" you kind of start getting cynical.

"Yes, I do mean it. I compliment in a similar way to (the rare occasion) I flirt, both times because that's how I genuinely feel and because it's true. I can't do empty ones, I find it awkward. It depends on the person - sometimes it can be about a particular feature or trait but other times it's appreciation of how brilliant a person they are overall. The best compliment I've received? I'm not sure I have one that stands above the rest. The ones I particularly cherish are from those who I value and respect, even cherish sometimes. And they all possess two qualities, they've made me feel seen and valued, dare I say important to that person. " Those are the compliments that should mean the most. Being seen and valued is the best compliment I think.

"I only compliment genuinely if I mean it, sometimes I think they are recieved as some kind of cheap sexual advance and as I'd hate to give that impression I don't do it as much these days. I think we all look at ourselves and often see only what we perceive as our faults so its nice if for no reason someone makes us feel good by passing a nice comment. I regularly get compliments on my eye colour, probably 3 or 4 times a week. Perhaps its shallow of me but it always makes me smile " Doesn't need to be shallow to smile at being told something nice though. It is too easy to just see our own faults, seeing ourselves through the eyes of others is hard, because we dont have their eyes.

"By far and away the best and most flattering compliment I have received in at least the last 20 years was from a very special lady fabber who told me (offine and in person - so no bucket of salt required) that I was a very beautiful man... I'm not a flagrant complimenter myself - I will never say something I don't mean, so if I have complimented you, you can know that I genuinely mean it... (not least, because if you are honest you dont have to remember what you have told people in the past... And my memory is shot!!) " Others might want a bucket, salt optional.... but I meant it

"That’s the thing with compliments. A thousand people can say you are beautiful/ handsome and it means nothing and you brush it off. Then someone you like says it and suddenly it makes your day. I always compliment genuinely and it’s not get a response it’s just a genuine appreciation of a feature or characteristic that made me smile x You make a good point there.... I shall counter with the sadness that for many a thousand people can say you're beautiful/handsome or whatever and you dont hear it, and one person says you're not and it's the only thing you can hear. That's why it is so hard to believe compliments for many of us.... the volume is turned too high on the negative. We disregard when we think people are only saying it to be nice. It doesn't feel right because we don't have the same view in our heads. If someone says I'm handsome I tend to ignore it because that's not how I see myself (even tho I know I'm not seeing myself as others do)" As I said somewhere way up there ^^ We can see ourselves through the eyes of others, as we dont have their eyes....

"If I pay a compliment what favour am I currying? What am I going to get? I'm not having a go at the lady _eli quoted, I'm just letting you know that sometimes it's nice to let people know when you admire them " Thinking that our compliments/those of our friends are genuine and doubting others is a thing isn't it? I'm not sure why that is - it reminds me of the thread Tea did earlier about being a "good" person and someone said treating others equally. Why do we believe ourselves but question others? I'm not sure but it's interesting.

"On here it's mostly to curry favour That's really no compliment at all I think that can be true sometimes but it's a tad cynical - I'd like to believe that we all (bar when we're trying to have sex with someone) genuinely mean our compliments and say them as appreciative verbal nods, at least 90% of the time. I agree with _eli. I doubt I will ever meet anyone I have messaged on here (tho it hurts my heart to admit it) If I pay a compliment what favour am I currying? What am I going to get? I'm not having a go at the lady _eli quoted, I'm just letting you know that sometimes it's nice to let people know when you admire them " Why is it nice? "I never say anything I don't mean, if I compliment a person it's because I genuinely and sincerely want to. I don't really like getting complimented it makes me a bit uncomfortable... Especially if it's on my looks, much prefer a compliment about my personality. Why do you think that is? I don't know, maybe it's because I find it more believable that someone would find me funny or nice or whatever than truly think I'm physically attractive... Or maybe it's because looks arnt as important to me as personality, I'd much rather somone remember me for being a kind/caring/funny/smart or whatever person than a pretty person " That makes all the sense in the world

"I tend not to make deliberate compliments I'd sooner they be a fluid and natural part of a conversation as opposed to wedged in and direct They always seem a little forced when they are stand alone comments" See, I think sometimes they seem more genuine. "I'm not a very good complimenter or do it often so when I do compliment someone I absolutely mean it. I also hate compliments, I take it with a pinch of salt and forget about it, thinking it couldn't ever be true. The best compliment has always got to be my eyes. Husband says they're so honest (and naughty of course). " Like me.... you assume they've got the wrong person, or are just being insincere.... Honest and naughty is an awesome compliment. And combo.

"Honestly people.. Tell people every day how much you appreciate them! Even the cashier or the bus driver.. If they've made you smile or reached you, made your day in the smallest way.. . Tell em, show em!! This is what makes the world go round. X Freya, you are utterly right! I try to live by this. When I leave the house I recently did this with the chap who served me in B&Q. First time I was there, he was going out of his way to call a taxi for an old guy, next time I went in he served me again and I mentioned it. He was really chuffed! And his co worker said she had seen it... I just said it's nice to be nice " It really is! I think it can absolutely make a person's day if you notice them.

"I would never give a compliment I don't genuinely mean. I tend to give more where I think they are needed, such as if somebody has a downer on themselves, but my compliments are no less sincere. I personally feel very uncomfortable receiving compliments. Maybe that's hypocritical. It just seems to me that I'm supposed to agree with the good things being said about me but I don't always. Luke That's how so many of us feel sadly Luke.... a wise woman (on this thread) told me just to accept the compliments. Because to not do so is taking away the right of the person giving the compliment to have that opinion. Nowadays I say thank you. I just feel very uncomfortable because it seems like I'm agreeing with them, but really I'm acknowledging their kindness. " And that's exactly the point. Just acknowledging their kind words.

I’m not a gushy human so when I say something complementary I absolutely mean it. Whilst I will accept complements from friends I still struggle to do it graciously. We all know beautiful people who are insecure about how they look. Or people less gifted with looks who "punch above their weight" because they think they are good looking and that confidence works. Also It's easier to believe the dark voices in your mind if you have low self esteem

"On here it's mostly to curry favour That's really no compliment at all That's unfair to a hell of a lot of people on here. And I find it very sad that anyone actually believes it. Unfair how? Because a lot of the time it isn't to curry favour. Some people just give a compliment because they see something to compliment. Not everyone has an ulterior motive. I agree 100% with this poshy I make sense occasionally.... You pretty much always make sense.. Aww fanks Your welcome.. even if you don't read my messages " Don't take it personally.... my inbox scares me

"I only pay compliments when I mean them. It may be about something specific or a general observation. What's been your best received? I don't receive many on here. I think actually the best compliments aren't anything specific but general sentiments such as acceptance and conversation." Well, I think you're rather delightful

"Yes i try to give compliments a lot and make them genuine as it’s nice to see someone’s face light up when they receive it " I think compliments can absolutely make someone's day. And that can only be a good thing!
