Anyone here have any personal experience of this?

I'm nearly 45, with a grown up son.

Other contraception just doesn't agree with me.

I want to enjoy sex without the fear of any accidents (even when using protection)

Pros/cons?

Periods are currently very regular, no signs of peri-menopause.

I wanted to be sterilised.

I asked, was over 40 and have 4 kids and long history of multiple miscarriages.

I got told that no I couldn't have it and the new thing was to have the coil instead as it was cheaper and had a higher success rate.

I had the coil. I got pregnant with the coil in and had an ectopic pregnancy and lost my left tube.

My anger was immense at the while situation for so many reasons.

So my advice to you would be that you may well get told no and that the NHS doesn't fund it and you may have to really push for it. And even then they may not. And you really should have a look at the success rate on it as its so much lower than male sterilisation. And it's also more invasive surgery for us women as opposed to men.

I’m 33 and finished having my ‘planned’ family.

I use condoms as choice of contraception.

I won’t go on any hormones, the pill didn’t agree with me years ago and has since put me off ever going on anything else. I don’t wish to be sterilised or anything else permanent, it’s all too final and like the idea of keeping my body intact.

Thanks ladies, I definitely don't want any more children.

I've had the copper coil and my periods were horrendous, heavy, and lasting a week.

The implant made me completely nuts! Like seriously psycho.

So for that reason I wouldn't be sure about the other coil with hormones.

I got sterilised 2017 as I already have 6 kids and many other pregnancies resulting in my health and life at risk. I was asking from age of 21 after my 3rd child and was told not til I was 25.. I asked many times after I was 25 and was told no as I was still young and may decide to have more. My body rejected the pill and the implant made me poorly so was removed, I wasnt allowed a coil due to my high fertility! In 2017 though, it wasn't argued at all given my history and I opted for the surgical sterilisation as was instant and no check up needed as such. It is a 3week recovery due to stitches and that but mine was longer as I set myself back over doing things.. All I will say is, make sure you are set on your decision and be adamant with gynaecologists that it is what you want..they try to sway you not to do it as it irreversible once done. Good luck whatever you decide xx

I had my tubes tied at the same time I had my youngest child. It was a planned caesarian. My doctor actively encouraged me to opt for this when I said I was certain I didn't want any more children. Before he suggested it we had planned for my husband to have his tubes done as I was sick of having contraceptive implants.

I don't regret it although I have had the odd pang of sadness when I remember I'm unable to have more children naturally. Which is crazy as I damn well don't want any more. Three's plenty.

I don't think it had any effect on my periods - but I was pregnant and breastfeeding alternately for about 9 years so hadn't had periods in nearly a decade. Now the breastfeeding is pretty much done with I have pretty regular light periods same as they were before I became a mum.

I'm glad I had it done. It's one less thing to worry about.

It can be hard to get though. My sister in law has been refused one as she only has one child and is in her 20s still. Her doctor didn't believe she knew her own mind and thought she might want more children. Condescending twat

don't let that put you off, I had reactions to the implant/injection but have been fine with the hormone coil.

I have twice tried and twice been turned down. The first time I was too young and last time I'd entered perimenopause so again the answer was no.

I did get a price to have it done privately, but it was beyond my means at the time and now I could afford it I'm not so bothered about it!

H has had 4 children from different men, one the downfalls of a swinging and promiscuous life All I would say big decision as this not reversible but for H means a lot of saving on condoms lol

I had mine removed when I was 39 just after my 2nd son was born by planned C Section. I'd had a very traumatic pregnancy due to serious hyperemisis and couldn't face the thought of ever going through it again. My consultant just told me she would ask again during the section to make sure. My periods afterwards became reeeeeeaally heavy though, those first couple of days I bleed a LOT.

i am, i got surgically sterilised in 2014, at 27/28, by your age alone you should have a much easier time than some women do with trying to find permanent non chemical options, they do quiz you to make sure your sure & often advise the male gets a vasectomy as its easier & reversible in most cases, I was a single mum already with kids a decade apart.

i was given 3 options after the grillings

1.clips - i read up on lots of forums about complaints of the coming off, and causing pain by being where they shouldn't be

2.blocker type that they insert into the end of fallopian tube - again read lots of stories of extended pain afterwards

these 2 options also mean putting foreign objects in the body which it doesn't tend to like much

BOTH of the above can still result in unwanted pregnancies if they become dislodged.

3. bilateral salpingectomy aka fallopian tube removal - ovaries in place, womb in place just no connecting tubes

i have had no issues whatso ever,lighter periods and less cramps too and as far i read when researching this option has the least likelyhood of unwanted pregnancies from dislodgments, least long term pain and complications. this one however is permanent you cannot reverse it and whilst your eggs and womb are intact it would require PRIVATELY funded fertility treatment, the nhs will not do it."

mine was done via keyhole surgery & was a day surgery, home by afternoon, 2/3 days.

I had the Essure procedure 3 years ago. T

Took 10 minutes. Little springs like the inside of a pen were inserted vaginally into my fallopian tubes and scar tissue forms around them.

I was conscious, no scarring and home the same night, normal cramping pain and a little bleeding, It has worked for me but I believe the procedure was withdrawn from use now because women were having issues.

I've asked for sterilisation at the age of 39 and had it done a few months after seeing the GP. The GP was understanding of the reasons I wanted it and had no objections whatsoever. Did the referral right away. Guess it depends on the GP a lot.

I’ve been asking regularly to be sterilised since I was 25 as I can get horribly painful and emotional periods. Every time I’ve been told no, even though it has caused havoc with my mental health and jobs as I need to take 2 days off due to cramping and bleeding. Apparently I might want children one day, even though I’ve told them unequivocally it’s not going to happen.

I'd challenge that in court if you've had many refusals, it's your body, noone else & noone should be deciding if a woman wants children other than herself

This has been on my mind lately. I have 2 children, I’m 36 now, single and I don’t want anymore. I’ve had 2 csections and got preeclampsia with both pregnancies so the risks alone is just a no from me. The mirena coil fits it’s purpose but I find it just gives me awful mood swings..highs, lows, erratic bleeding. I’d like to be sterilised then possibly go on the pill to manage my periods.

you shouldn't need the pill afterwards, periods reduce as the egg never reaches it to fully inflame the walls and less the egg to break down also, your periods are often lighter after - you still have your natural hormones...I was gonna say normal but most women these days have synthetic hormones in their systems most of their adult lives...so that doesn't fit.

you might need to argue your case, when they suggest a male partner got done, they got told that 1. i didn't have one & 2. that doesn't help me from becoming pregnant.

i had 2kids, a decade apart, another would have put me in my late 40's/early 50's before i got my final kid to 18...might seem fine & normal until i say i've been a mum since 15 & both not around.

thdy forget that women are first & foremost individuals, labels like wife & mother do not & should not diminish Joan only to 'my wife' or 'mother' she is & always was Joan first.

I was done after my 2nd child. Doc tried to persuade me to get my man done instead. Told him it was my decision not to have any more kids and why should my man make himself infertile for me. My body my choice. Was done within 2 months of initial appointment. Would say though periods afterwards were horrendous and they wouldn't give me the pill to control/lighten them. Thankfully I'm past that stage now too.
