Sleepless nights make you fat....FACT!!!

I am trying so hard to keep my weight down, and when you have a 13yr old daughter that can survive on very little sleep and is now up for most of the night. Tea and biscuits are a comfort and anything else that you can raid.

My thoughts tonight is "Is this ever going to end"

Sorry about that but sometimes i just need to get these things off my chest... Rant over.... Night all (I hope)

Nothing worse than needing sleep and knowing you are unlikely to get enough. Hope you can get some rest at least x

Difficult one! I can totally empathise with having a nibble in order to beat boredom or any other uncomfortable feeling. I hope this does not sound patronising as it is not meant to... but I wonder whether being aware of what makes you seek comfort food (ie your daughter being a night person and keeping you up) in itself might help? And in addition to that awareness, perhaps having prepared and ready some healthy snacks e.g. said carrots (with a little dip of houmous ) might be the answer?

I believe the thread title is entirely accurate. There is research to show that if you are sleepless for too long your metabolism gets confused (that's not quite what the research says). You are likely to find it harder to lose weight and easier to gain weight. This is even when you take out the additional calories consumed with night time snacking.

Strangely, sleeping too much also has a similar effect.

It's a finely balanced thing this human body of ours.

Great idea (although I will confess they also taste great with cheese and accompanied by a glass of Merlot

Will the docs not give you medication for her.. get her into the habit of night sleeping.. do you get respite care help so you can rest up every so often.. ? hope you manage some rest

I wouldn't believe statistical analyasis, the study may have been conducted on a small amount of confederates. and the anti placibo affect may have impacted re-search, if the study was not conducted over a long period of time then the likyhood of the results being accurate will be hindered.

In the US you can get Melatonin tabs over the counter as a mild sleeping aid with relatively few if any side effects. You can get them on the net as well.

you carry on keeping those things on your chest! they look just perfect where they are!

but! it i better to have your daughter keeping you up and being there for you in the future...than not having a daughter at all! wouldnt be without mine even if she is a nag to her dad

There are some recent studies that suggest turning lights on if you wake is going to make it hard to get back to sleep ans it creates a chemical imbalance. I don't know if you put lights on when she wakes but it may help if you can keep the light levels as low as possible. Hope all works out soon for you both.

at 13 i see no reason why you shouldnt go to bed and leave her watching telly, by law a 13 year old can babysit so she can sit watching telly while your in bed surely?

I have been working shifts for 20+ yrs and its totally messed up my metabolism. I'm eating when I should be eating etc. All over the place 8-/

I feel your pain with the sleepless nights.I have trouble sleeping as it is and then when my eldest goes through his phases of waking and refusing to go back to sleep,like now the reason I am on here at 4:30am...lol...I am them a mess the next day and gets worst as week goes on.the weekends they go to their dad's are usually spent.sleeping to try and catch up.

Yes i do get respite but only 24 nights per 6 months. I get every other weekend to myself which i spend with Pork so sleep is had during the day

She is severely disabled and still in pads day and night, but yes i do, do that when i have had enough and can't take anymore x

I'm an insomniac and find that when I really can't sleep and theres no point even trying that if I'm awake and doing stuff for 22 hours out of 24 that my body demands food at regular intervals.

Obviously when you sleep there's some kind of mechanism to suppress appetite when you're asleep.

Well! What a disappointment this thread is!

I only need about four hours sleep then awake most of the night - I thought you were going to quote some boffin's research I could use to explain my girth: my craving for Greggs' steak bakes and bread pudding paying no part...oh well...sigh!
