Probably someone with an entitled attitude that complains when they don't get their own way. Not really seen it used much on here though compared to some other terms.

Nah, but there's plenty of others for men. A Kyle or a Chad for example. You can stereotype any name if you try hard enough

I know the origins. It has however become a generic term for any woman that seems to complain or stand up for herself so the origins are irrelevant.

That's what happens with every term. It gets twisted and perverted and abused to the point that it loses all meaning. Which is rather comical based upon the responses compared to what the OP asked.

Ironic really given the subject matter.

Although its exact origins are uncertain, the meme became popular a few years ago as a way for people of colour, particularly black Americans, to satirise the class-based and racially charged hostility they often face.

I guess that's the problem though the fact that you weren't aware of the meaning and that in itself makes it not a light hearted subject. And you've been giving opinions on what people think so I don't really see what the issue is.

Errrr I beg to differ.. usually Karens just love to complain about all sweet nothing. There’s a big difference in the two. They usually tend to be annoying and get fired up easily on sensitive matters … but more than anything is the entitled aura they have that makes them Karens

Anyone can be one but somehow they tend to be the middle aged women who aren’t very open minded..

Kerry and Dublin

From the Urban Dictionary:

Middle aged woman, typically blonde, makes solutions to others' problems an inconvenience to her although she isn't even remotely affected.

Example:

Karen refuses to wear a face mask for her 5 minute trip to the supermarket during a pandemic. She harasses the workers, asks to see the manager and threatens to sue.

That might have been the original definition, but the term also now gets used for any woman who rightly defends herself and her position, it’s a convenient term for liberal men to use so as not to appear like a Misogynist, it’s just another term used to keep women in their place when they get too uppity and start speaking up.

Funny how there’s not an equivalent term when a man speaks out, wonder why that is ?!

If it’s about that, then I’m also a Karen for voicing out my side always (but by doing so I don’t try to bend other people because I feel superior or because me being a white blonde woman makes me entitled to bend people to my will)

The male equivalent is a Kevin and there’s loads of them too . Usually middle aged (happen to be Americans for whatever reason )

Basically what people might refer to as a gammon also could be a Kevin

Anyone can be one but somehow they tend to be the middle aged women who aren’t very open minded..

I’m glad some people now call them out when they behave like one and I hope they realise what they are doing/saying by being called out

Thank god you aren’t one of them CJ

Agreed kylie u not a karen! It's good to stand up for what u think! I do! If only u knew my sister lol! And as I say her name is karen! I spent a week with her on the isle of wight last month! Forgot how karen she is! Most embarrassing at times! I kept having to tell her to chill! Was a very trying week being together 24/7 that said I do love her! Our mum was the same back in the day x

I just can’t believe how some women don’t even realise about this behaviour !! X I hope she didn’t have to say shitty things about ur daughter… "

She was the last person to know about sophie! As was not looking forward to her reaction! But tbh after the initial 1001 questions she was not as opinionated as I thought she b! One of brothers is funny enough the kevin! I could fall out with him over his opinions of sophie! But i wouldn't want to do that x

I think of a Karen as a self-righteous condescending asshole. And for a man it's a Kyle. It's funny actually because the biggest 'Karen' I know is actually called Karen.

Do I think it's a name that is thrown around at women who are doing absolutely nothing wrong? Yes, very often I seen it thrown at women who are confident and self assured.

Male equivalent is Ken (you take away the ar).

Kyle, is scumbag Kyle who is a really shitty friend or person to

Unfortunately yes it has become a term that gets overused in such ways. It is now in the mainstream and gets thrown around as a generic insult to "deflect" differing opinions. Similar to how snowflake is used, it has lost its original intent as is now an umbrella term.

The... "confusion"... of self assured and confident women being called "Karen" is because often enough the "speak to the manger" side of Karen always comes with those traits of confidence. Were as a women can be self assured and confident without having the attitude that Karen is originally attached to.

Some people then struggle to view them as separate.

Would happily see someone fired and consider it justice done over something ridiculously trivial.

It’s not being assertive tho, it’s being a demanding c**t really .. and being entitled and superior… it’s a bit of a mix of all those things. Throwing a tantrum just because they don’t get their way, basically a big man child …

That’s a Ken/Kevin/Terry

I do understand where you're coming from.

I always hear women labelled as a Karen but rarely do I ever hear someone label a man in the same way with a Ken or a Kyle etc. And the fact that it isn't clear what the male equivalent is shows that the label Karen is misogynistic and it does ridicule women. If you look closely enough I do think we throw that name at females more because it's always been more acceptable to shoot down women.

They seem to be referring to every woman that posts in there which comes back to the whole theory of a lot people call any woman that knows her own mind and isnt afraid to voice her opinion is somehow a Karen.

"I can tell you pretty much all the fab Karen's live on the virus section of the forum.

Why because they dare to have an opinion?

I don't recall anyone being called a Karen tho.

The couple who I'm replying to just have. I don't know which ppl in the virus forum they are calling Karens tho.

I read that differently. It's not all women who post there are Karen's but all Karen's post there.

Still not helpful for my understanding but possibly not the broad brush it may have been read as.

Speaking of the virus forum, is the term troll genderless (or covers all genders). Will admit I see it as a male name.
