"Have decided to treat myself to a Rolex as an investment. Have put myself on this never ending waiting list with a AD. To the ppl that manage to get one from a AD , how long did you have to wait? Not interested in the grey market. " They are not an investment unless you buy a limited edition or a highly sought after one. They just hold their price The hulk is fetching big money as production stopped. Now people are calling Kermits, hulks So look for limited editions or buy a vintage As another poster suggested Get a used Hulk from a reputable dealer with cards

"Have decided to treat myself to a Rolex as an investment. Have put myself on this never ending waiting list with a AD. To the ppl that manage to get one from a AD , how long did you have to wait? Not interested in the grey market. " You do know the waiting list isn’t real, the only way, for example, to be able to buy (an artificially inflated priced) SS Daytona, is to show a history of spending even more ridiculous amounts of money on watch(es) that you don’t particularly want, and they can’t ordinarily sell unless massively discounted therefore exposing the ridiculous situation with ADs, and people will fall over themselves in the hope of being deemed special enough to be one of the chosen-on s allowed to buy a watch! And because they don’t trust you they will keep the watches paperwork for six months ensuring it would be nigh impossible for you to sell it! (It’s for your own good! And never in the history of Rolex has anyone suffered from buyers remorse!) Porsche and Ferrari do the same, try buying a GT3 911 with no purchase history with the dealer. They didn’t like it that people were buying (sometimes merely a token deposit of £1000 was all the requirement to secure an order) then without needing pay a penny more they could sell their order on to someone who was too slow in getting an allocation (rumours of brown envelopes being left in the salesman’s desk draw, ensuring certain people were always lucky enough to get an allocation were whispered at loudly!) there has always been a demand outstripping supply for the GT models meant there would always be someone who would pay whatever was required to have it! getting a bidding war between a couple of people and it was possible to clear £50k-£100k for no effort! Anyone believed to be a flipper will never be allowed to purchase another GT car, . This enabled to dealer network to a certain extent, control the used value of their product ensuring the profit stayed with them and not Joe Public! Ferraris control over certain cars meant that, even the most loyal collector, if he sold a certain car, to, who they[Ferrari] didn’t deem acceptable and more importantly, worthy! meant the end to the loyal, die-hard-multi-million-pound-spender would essentially be persona non grata and never be permitted to buy a car from them again, this is the kind of nonsense that creates the mythology behind Ferrari, and those that fall for it will overlook the oft shoddy, sorry characterful, car is boderline cultish behaviour! I can still remember, and it wasn’t really that long ago, being able to walk into an AD and buy there and then from stock, pretty much any model from the range and often with a discount! Me, personally I prefer my Tudor Black Bay and pretending a watch is an investment is you trying to convince yourself that it really will be worth x times more than you paid for it, I’ve done it multiple times when paying ridiculous sums for camera lenses (some more expensive than a Daytona Rolex) it’s that unique science called Man-Maths! Marketing, the science of getting people to buy stuff they never knew they needed, but now they’ll sell a spare kidney to have, omplete and utter genius!! only gutted i never dreamt it up! I sincerely hope you can get yourself one, and enjoy wearing it, at any and every opportunity for the nicely crafted item it is; then you’ll never want to sell it and it will become priceless and no longer an investment and just a watch, the reason Rolex made it in the first place

"I ordered a brand new Range Rover 6 months ago and its still not turned up! I rang the dealer to complain and they went off on one saying that I had to pay for it ! Sounds like I will have to wait z bit longer ! " computer chip shortage globally for new cars, the 2nd car market is ridiculous at the moment run of the mill stuff is being bought in by the trade for prices they would have been retailed at 12 months ago, and one best place to maximise they price you’ll be offered is WeBuyAnyCar!

"Lead times for new sailing yachts are bad too Approx 10 years for any new orders of 737, but you can jump the queue if you pay an extra one million " Is that the 737 that was grounded and production suspended due to safety critical failures, do Boeing pay prospective buyer a £1 million to take delivery a year earlier

"Anyone who collects luxury items, may I ask why? It's something I've honestly never understood, to spend lots of money on several watches/cars/handbags/ shoes or any other luxury item. I'm not trying to denigrate anyone and I'm certainly not jealous, I just don't understand what people "get" from having multiples of the same things with fancy labels on. Genuine question....." Genuine question? Do you have more than one book/dvd/picture/ornament in your house/possession? Same logic. Different numbers.

" We have lots of books, but not collected because they are luxury items and to be kept "pristine" in dust jackets. Many have been gifted/handed down/inherited/acquired for 50p at jumble sales. No DVDs anymore. Only ornaments people bought us as gifts or kids made at school. Pot plants also are gifts. What bit of jewellery have was either inherited, is my wedding ring or my Dad gifted me as a younger person. Only laptops in the house are work ones, no tablets. One mobile phone each, to be replaced when they conk out. Telly in the living room is Freeview and appears to be smaller than most computer screens nowadays. No Netflix subscription (or other streaming service). This is why I'm asking the question, because we are not collectors of "things". I was, in any case, particularly asking about people who buy luxury items and buy lots of the same type of thing (such as watches or cars) and where those items are generally not intended to be "used", but instead to sit in a cupboard/bank vault/garage, for fear of damaging them. I think I understand having multiple cheap watches, for example, if the owner liked to match the colour to their outfit and so wore all the watches (or other item) regularly.

You’ve kind of answer your question - you say you don’t ‘get’ why people have multiples of certain things. The simple answer is normally - because they can and want to. There doesn’t have to be a reason, and if there is a reason them telling you isn’t going to make you getting it any more obvious to you - i think your trying square a circle by trying in your view to combine someone’s wants to their needs

There’s a want and then there’s the ability ti follow through. There’s hardly a “need”. Dress watch for the boardroom ro ballroom. Dover for the beach chrono for timing the eggs And a rolex to wear as a ‘beater’ when gardening so that the nice watches arenkept prostine It can border on mental illness though so there’s no rational explanation

" With watches it’s the appreciation of the watch and brand As with any other collector it’s trying to find the piece that floats your boat Yes there are people who just want to show they can buy the best However I take your point to a degree I have two (for my budget) very expensive watches but a few others less expensive I feel a sense of achievement in the fact that I can reward myself for working hard with wearing a niece piece I also thoroughly enjoy talking watches with other people who I meet Watch collecting is a thoroughly absorbing past time as they are so diverse and interesting. So I’ve stopped buying lol but almost ordered a new limited edition watch as an everyday watch

"It depends on the model you are after. My Daytona is due at the end of a 10 year waiting list and it was only through my previous purchases with an AD that I managed to get on it at all. Don't buy a Rolex as an investment unless you've got a desirable or limited edition model and even these are difficult to predict the projected value of. The service alone comes to circa £500 and is needed every 5 years which seriously eats into any profits so be prepared for that. If you just like the look of the watch, you might be better off with a high-end rep. Websites like RWI will show you the way. Some even have clone movements and most will pass as gen to the naked eye. Plus it won't sting as much if you ding it or, heaven forbid, get it stolen. " Never buy copy watches Don’t buy fashion watches You can buy credible watches for the same or less money

It’s part of the WOS group and so is no different from any other branch. There are no ‘waiting lists’ at WOS. Watches are allocated to a branch. The sales associates then put forward names to the manager who to offer a watch to based on multiple factors such as previous spend etc. There’s not a physical list where you are number 7 or whatever.

"To be fair to the op it’s no different nt to women Buying designer bags that are still Kept in their dust jackets. It’s an investment and kept properly retain their price when sold on. Often idiots think to pinch electrical wjen they break in but walk past a rack of bags or women’s shoes " Particularly Hermes Birkin bags but that’s because it’s so exclusive and kinda difficult to get and timeless … I think the rest will just retain the original price …if you are lucky and picked right!! Otherwise they will lose 30% value if you wanna resell luxury designer bags
