Billy Joel without a doubt his social and political commentary on songs like Allentown, Goodnight Saigon, Lenningrad sets him apart from Elton John.

Not sure about who's best but I do like Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire.

Oh and Elton's Mad Hatters & Tiny Dancer - because of their scenes in Almost Famous.

Both are great think I prefer billy joel like loads of his songs but love uptown girl mainly for the bit at the start on the video when they are using the ratchets to the tune of the song but also in late teenage years would daydream of meeting a lovely well spoken girl from posh area and walking her home along beautiful tree lined streets after an evening at her local on best behaviour trying to hide fact that are a shitbag only to receive a peck on the cheek on the magnificent porch of her parents splendid period property and walk home with high hopes for next time. Stupid fantasy I know but it stayed in my mind to this day haha

They really are!

And there's a definite similarity in composition and arrangement there.

How can you separate them they are brilliant individual's. The only way is the Elton writes with Bernie, where as Billy is solo

Billy Joel for me, the song would be ‘A matter of trust’ off the Bridge album. I first heard it in the 80’s bought the album (several great tracks on it ) and due to that heard even more great music written by the artist.

So for me it’s often an artist first song that I end up loving that seals the deal.

Hard one to call. I saw Elton in concert once and didn't enjoy it but like his music nd I also like most of Billy Joel so I'm sitting on the fence and saying a draw - cheating I know

I read that without thinking about the fact it was a song title and was totally confused for a second.

Could be worse, you could have been the person who started the thread… then that would be a really dull thing to do

by the big field

Ones an annoying attention queen who plays piano and sings a bit- the other is an accomplished musician who can write both music & lyrics without any assistance...not really much comparison
