What's the exchange rate for toilet rolls and petrol?

Is it 9 rolls per litre, where you are from?

its ridiculous. I had to try 7 petrol stations to get some fuel and there were queues everywhere. Had my car not been on empty I wouldn't have bothered

So from what I saw today complete exaggeration by the media, shock horror!

Three out of three petrol stations in my immediate locality, all different providers, were all out of fuel by about 3pm. Glad I didn't need any today.

It's actually 50 rolls. You see after the last panic buy there's so much toilet paper knocking around it's hardly a valuable commodity these days.

So why did America have fuel shortages in May this year? Are they getting their fuel from the UK?

"The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission told people to only use containers approved for fuel, and not plastic bags.

The safety body also tweeted that gas (read petrol) canisters should not be filled up over or near an open flame." This has got to be a once in a lifetime experience!

Seriously?

It's all media exaggeration, nothing to do with brexit, and nothing to do with hgv driver shortage. They can get the 5000 hgv drivers they claim are coming but it will solve nothing. To drive a petrol tanker you don't just need a hgv licence, you need to be adr qualified. Apparently there are the same amount of adr drivers this week as there was last week and the week before that.

Any idea of when calmness will descend because I’m dithering between waiting for it all to blow over, or use my precious last bit of fuel to drive to a garage and get some.

Only what if garage A doesn’t have any? Then I have to go to Garage B….then I conk out with no fuel!

Because 12 (out of 1200) BP stations and a handful of tesco/esso stations were a day late getting deliveries...all in South East.

Then Social media/Tabloids/TV news did what they always do!

If that’s all that was happening, the queues would be at their normal levels. People are rushing to top up tanks when the don’t even need to drive anywhere, “just in case”.

One of my neighbours has 4 cars in the family, and he filled them all yesterday. 2 of them belong to kids of his who live and work in London

I didn’t say he was an idiot. I didn’t say anyone was. I was just saying that the suggestion that the only people buying fuel were those who needed to get to work is not accurate. As with all panic buying, some people are buying stuff they don’t really need, “just in case”. Just some, not all. And it’s the extra “just in case” purchases that cause the problem

it was tesco bp and esso closing pumps and forcourts due to shortages of european hgv drivers that has caused the problem. people are just taking action according to the situation.

Most stations I passed yesterday had small queues but all were open. But the media love a panic story that they can add fuel (sorry) to. Get people to believe that there is a shortage of arse roll on shop shelves, and guess what, people buy more wear roll “just in case”, thereby creating a short term shortage.

They closed our local Sainsburys 2 hours early last night.

They still had plenty of fuel but customers were getting angry with the staff as they were saying no cans just fill your tank only.

It's the fuel can idiots that are causing the problem, utter dickheads.

People getting angry with staff is just unacceptable. So is people trying to fill up cans in addition to their tanks, creating more of a pinch than necessary on supply.

The media are the ones to be blame for all this panic buying. Last week to two weeks ago was the same shortage of drivers as this week, no one didn't panic then...Why? Because the media started talking.

you are inaccurate with your claims again. the petrol stations closing pumps and forcourts preceeded the uptick in demand. as there were fewer petrol stations and pumps open the remainder saw an increase in people drawing fuel at the pumps and forcourts that fuel to sell. this alone caused inevitable queues to form.

Oh! Oh! This is even better. Feeling smug about driving into one of the four slots available for charging your electric car as you pop into the supermarket to shop whilst others are queueing to fill their petrol tank just opposite you as you plug in the charger.

I’m a part time scientist, full time lover and next Thursday there’s going to be a lack of oxygen in the atmosphere. So as a heads up nip out Wednesday to get a few extra gulps down you. Oxygen can also be stored in Tesco bags and old HP sauce bottles. Glass ones only however.

Stay safe breathers.

It might encourage people to drive slower and consider non essential journeys. Personally I think it’s generating another form of lockdown as people conserve fuel over the weekend for the commute to work on Monday.

"people are just reacting to a problem caused by transport issues in the supply system. it's the free market economy in action. supply goes down demand goes up.

Short term demand goes up, so short term supply gets pinched. It’s all the extra people topping up their tanks this weekend that is pinching supply.

you are inaccurate with your claims again. the petrol stations closing pumps and forcourts preceeded the uptick in demand. as there were fewer petrol stations and pumps open the remainder saw an increase in people drawing fuel at the pumps and forecourts that fuel to sell. this alone caused inevitable queues to form.

I saw people on forecourts filling jerry cans on Friday morning as I drove past a couple of petrol stations. That's a sight I haven't seen before and it certainly isn't normal behaviour.

The closing of pumps was caused by the lack of the product at that location, therefore, there was no leave them open. The people reacted abnormally to that news. It is abnormal behaviour to buy the jerry cans and fill it with petrol when the product is freely available at your location.

the queues quite simply formed at some locations as they took up the slack due to having a larger supply than the many many pumps and forcourts that were forced to close in the middle of last week due to the transport issues now plaguing the countries economy.

It's normal, yes. But many tosspots with 3/4 full tanks were out topping up and filling up cans with extra fuel. Mainly because they are too stupid to understand that there's no shortage of fuel in this country.

"Don't understand why petrol stations can't just say filling fuel tanks only, no jerry cans, plastic barrels, wheelie bins or carrier bags."

^^^This. They could even station staff on the forecourt to prioritise emergency service vehicles and to only allow those with, say, a 1/4 of a tank or less to fill up. With a cap on amount for non emergency service vehicles. Emergency vehicles should be allowed to completely fill the tank. That'd stop the panic buyers pretty quickly because you'd not be able to "top up" a nearly full tank. However, I'm sure such actions would result in self entitled twats giving argy-bargy and becoming troublesome.

The Govt. should be organising tankers to deliver directly to emergency vehicle depots or reserve forecourts for emergency vehicles because the fact ambulances are queuing for over an hour, restricted to 30-40l of fuel is utterly ridiculous and an unacceptable risk to the public. Ditto fire engines, police vehicles etc.

Agree completely. I know some Emergency vehicle stations have their own fuel stocks but not many.

Perhaps set aside one pump for emergency services only, until the numpties stop panicking.

Some of these posts have been absolutely brilliant, and it just goes to show that in the middle of a crisis, someone has a sense of humour. However on a serious note, the government have said that they would mobilise the army as a last resort. They also say that there is no shortage of fuel, but it's driver shortage that's the problem. This then suggests that there are delivery trucks sitting idle in the yards of haulage companies, and distribution depots. Now unless I'm missing something here, and we are in the middle another world war, and it's neccesary to keep all our boys in readiness to move tanks on low loaders hauled by bloody great Scammels, wouldn't it make perfect sense to hire the boys out to the haulage contractors, and distributors who are short of drivers, with the said contractors paying the government the equivalent of their wage bill which has to be paid out as an overhead cost regardless, with the fund's generated going towards the deficit caused by covid. Is that too simple a solution for the average civil serpent, scratching a living in Her Majestys simple service, or Westminster soft cocks in suits, waiting for the the house of commons bar to open, to be able to work that out. Or does it take humble street wise guys like me, who just happen to be directors of medium sized UK companies, who have to handle crisis after crisis, to come up with a logical solution to the immediate problem.

"Everybody buying fuel really, really needs their fuel and everybody else is the numpty Ive noticed. "

I filled up (from empty) last weekend, when there was apparently no crisis. A full tank of diesel usually does me at least a fortnight. I'm on just less than 3/4 tank after today. So yes, I'll describe the panic buyers as numpties. If anyone "topped up" their car, filled cans with extra fuel etc, then they are contributing to the problem. If I have to queue when I next fill up, then so be it, but it'll be because I actually need fuel......

So why did America have fuel shortages in May this year? Are they getting their fuel from the UK?

I’d have pored one of the cans over her car and set fire to it! Fire starter!!"

Course you fucking would have fucking ridiculous comment.

I thought you could only carry 2 gallons in your car in cans?

Tried 3 stations today to get some as my light is on but no joy. Slightly frustrating but I will be OK (mainly because my dad had a full rank and nothing better to do than drive me around ).

Can work from home if needed and will cancel a site visit planned for this week. Usually get a hire car but an not driving around to refuel it after.

Wow! So even though you don't know her situation and why she was doing that you want to become an arsonist

A friend of mine did this today at a petrol station with full permission of the garage because she is a care home manager in a rural area and needed to make sure her staff could get to work so was giving them a petrol can each in case they couldnt get fuel. Yes idiots are panic buying but there is also legitimate reasons as to why people may be getting more feel when you think I might need.

we had to miss an event we had looked forward to for 2 years yesterday because we couldn't get any fuel on time despite the fact we live minutes from the refinery.

99/100 of these people are idiots. Whilst I'm not disputing there are very rare exceptions to the rule, it's generally people who aren't the brightest who rush out and panic buy stuff.

Unfortunately, rational thinking is missing in a lot of people as was proved with shortages of loo rolls, beans, flour, eggs etc etc last year during lockdown.

Think I'll resort to using the tree leaves as they'll be falling soon and keep the roll for winter to blow my trumpet but on a serious note panic buying fuel will scupper food transportation and making things difficult for the elderly who might need a taxi for any urgent matters

But they aren't rare exceptions because over 40% of the work force work from a vehicle or need that a car to be able to carry out their work.

I was just listening to the manager of a petrol station on the radio being interviewed.

He said he keeps hearing people all day saying "this is ridiculous every one is panic buying an it's not fair and who are these idiots "at the till. He said when he asks them how much they normally put in most of them say round about 20 to 30 pounds and at last them a week so he then says so why have you just put £70 in?

Everyone seems to think the problem is people stock piling, it isn't it most people who have put in a bit more just in case.

Wow thats a lot! Dangerous And illegal, im surprised the garage let her do that on safety grounds.

Tbe legal limit is 30 litres to be carried in cans.

I have had a pump cut off when I reached £100 once but was a lorry tank i was filling

Ok, so why have there been huge queues to get petrol at petrol stations? If everyone is going to work as per normal then queues would be few and far between because people would be using the same amount of petrol.

If someone needs say, half a tank once a week for general commuting purposes, why do they now need a full tank plus additional jerry cans?

I'm pretty sure during lockdown people were told not to panic buy because the supply chain would ensure everything would be available as per normal. And what did people do? Yup they went out and stripped the shelves.

And whilst I haven't seen much of the news recently I'm pretty sure they haven't said "hey guys, we're running out of fuel so you better all rush and get as much as you can before it goes!".

There have been queues at petrol stations because people have panicked! People have been told to stop because there is no shortage however they wont stop because they feel they need a bit more than they probably are going to use just in case.

Ok so you agree with me, they're panic buying. It's not rational thinking and if they took a step back and thought about it they wouldn't do it. Apologies if you find it offensive but these people are both stupid and selfish. Some people are probably still using the shit roll they panic bought last year because they weren't able to think rationally.

We're not going to agree on this one so I'll leave it there.

I never said I didn't agree with you I said it was completely extreme to threaten to set somebody's car on fire because you have no idea as to the situation that person was filling up cans.

day 5 and no sign of the fuel shortages abating, infact quite the opposite is true as more forcourts run out, bigger queues are forming in the few remaining stations with fuel and still no solutions to the situation from government who are determined to ignore what's happening.

I'm WFH at the minute so only really needing fuel for short runs and weekly trip to the shop. I'm supposed to be down at Thorpe Park this weekend with family though (hotel booked months ago and non-refundable) so will be pretty pissed off if I can't get petrol to get there and back.

So now the government are to be held responsible for people with zero common sense?

Oh wait they have been trying that for the past 18 months and we all know how that's ended up.

I'm in Hampshire and pulled straight up to a pump at the first petrol station, drove past 2 more and a bit busy for Monday lunchtime, but no queues on the road.

I was lucky I was nearly empty on Wednesday so I filled up. Good job I did as I am a key worker. And I have to be able to get to mum incase anything happens. My tank will last me about two weeks then I normally fill up then. But I will fill up when I get to half a tank. Just hope I can get fuel for my work van so I can continue to deliver pharmacy post and pick up blood's etc

Do they think that their cars will get thirsty maybe?
