Ok,

Me and a few mates were watching the england game last night over a few beers. We got talkin about good footballers and then began argueing over who is the all time greatest!

Guys, I know you have all had this conversation before so I want to hear your nominations.

We got Messi, Ronaldo (Brazillian), C.Ronaldo, Zidane and host of others...

When the above have won 3 World Cups and scored over 1000 first class goals they could be considered to be better than Pele.

Until such a time, Pele is the No1

No definite answer as obviously they all played at different times. De Stefano, Zidane, Pele, Maradona, Gary Mabbutt, George Best, Messi, Ronaldo and so many more brazilians, I could just go on and on.

Bobby Charlton and Gary Mabbutt - you're having a laugh!

Pele, Puscas, Di Stefano, Cruyff, Best and, in the modern era, the only ones who come close are Zidane, Maradona and Messi.

Jim Baxter - who Pele said was one of the best player he had ever seen - would have been there too if he hadn't d*unk away his talent earlier in his career than even Best.

I think that Lionel Messi is going to outshine some of the past greats, and he still has another 10 years at least to make that happen. If he can stay injury free.

If players had of fulfilled their potential then gazza and best to name but two may have been right up there stirring up the argument.

A lot of it depends on seeing these players conquer the game at that giving time and therefore it's a never ending argument.

I have been lucky enough to witness zidane, c.ronaldo, messi and Thierry Henry in the flesh. And for me to watch zidane was breathtaking. The way he controlled the ball and created space was amazing. So for me zidane is my favourite player of all time.

It's simple we re talking about the greatest! so you add in there performance and what they gave to the game and what they acheived in the game!! no one supasses Pele! Best had about 5 good season at utd! Maradonna had one great world cup 86! Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Zidane Ronaldo!! maybe Messi Maybe C Ronaldo can be in the top 10! but to be truly great you need to win a world cup in my eyes!

I agreed to a degree BUT !!! Ryan Giggs has been a great footballer BUT one man does not make a team and it takes a team to win a world cup. SO if the best footballer ever played for a crap national team he would never win a world cup

PELE gets my vote by the way !!!!

For raw talent Maradona or Best.

But for making the best use of your raw talent Pelé or Messi are waaaaay ahead.

For me Pelé takes it easily for his accomplishments. Maybe Messi will be as good or better by the time he hangs up his boots but not quite yet.

Stanley Matthews. A player from an era where the ball weighed as much as a cannonball, the shorts were long, and the men didn't go round hugging each other after a goal - a firm handshake would do. They also had sensible haircuts and smoked pipes at half-time.

Coke isn't really a performance enhancing drug when it comes to sport and the quantity that El Diego was taking actually would have made him play worse
