If it’s because they are being attacked for doing their job, I think no.

But there should be stricter laws for anyone doing so.

Maybe give them bodycams like they have had to do with some paramedics.

It’s a shitty world when a paramedic needs to wear a bodycam.

Park like a twat in a dangerous place, get a deserved ticket.

If they weren't on the streets of our cities bet there would be traffic chaos with people parking and blocking roads and paths any how they want . Also think there would be a call for a team of people to be created to stop it happening by fining them . One of those jobs that is essential and needed but hated by all who happen to encounter one

I see people get ticketed all the time where I work because they always park in the bus space and it does cause chaos because it's right on the roundabout so if the bus can't pull in it grinds to a halt.

Though I did feel sorry for one the other day, boot up and was loading stuff in and the warden came and gave him a ticket

Please take a moment to read this.

The line, should traffic wardens be armed? Comes from the comedy programme, Bottom, featuring Rick Mayall & Ade Emdmonson, aka Richie & Eddie.

The post has been submitted in jest, but it appears most people are taking it far too seriously.

Arming them with firearms might be a bit extreme, but I would happily increase their powers. Where someone has been a complete prick where they have parked (disabled space, bus stop, blocking someone in, for example), they should be allowed to key the car or slash its tyres.

Coming back to find wanker carved down the side of the car would be much more powerful than an 80 quid fine.

Volunteer vigilante traffic warden!

Must admit, I feel the same way when it comes to extreme speed on the roads. There’s a long straight hill leading out of the town I live in, and at the weekends you can here motorbikes screaming up that hill all weekend. If, as a volunteer, I was only allowed to nick those doing over 90 (rather than marginal cases) I’d still be busy.

Thanks. I also thought that a bare-arsed birching in the market square might also act as a deterrent, but then spotted the flaw in the plan as some people might enjoy it too much.

So back to the key and the knife. Carve a giant cock on the bonnet, and “inconsiderate wanker” on the door.

Interesting to read the views so far. It looks like overall there is marginal support for traffic wardens, although most people are sharing their support or distain for them, not actually answering the question if they should be armed or not.

While I'm sure we have all suffered with fools who have abandoned cars somewhere annoying and there needs to be someone/something to control those situations, my experience of wardens is somewhat different.

I've suffered at least twice from them being slightly obnoxious, condescending and spiteful with little reason.

Many are much like the poor kid who was bullied at school, developed a persecution complex and now takes their anger out on the world by having gotten a position with some power.

So to the question: would we arm them? No. Because I'd have been tempted to wrestle the gun off them, point it in their direction, and empty the clip.

Is it wrong to try and inject a bit of humour now and then for a giggle?

The poster gets flamed (unless they have tits) and everyone else is correct in their own view.

That is the beauty and diversity of discussion and debate. The difficulty lies with knowing something is a joke, from someone being serious.

I'm rarely serious lol

Everyone else is in the wrong, just like everyone else was in the wrong when you referred to cyclists as gaudy rent boys and didn't get the joke. Maybe, instead of asking people to re-read their replies you should research 'humour'

I have actually enjoyed the thread, instead of creating the division you hoped for, the most common answer is along the lines of they're just people doing their job.

From the very start, it was clear that this suggestion was a joke.

Reading the po-faced responses that suggested it might be a bad idea really made me laugh.

I think we need more creative suggestions on how to make traffic wardens more effective and less hated.

Illegally parked cars being taken away and sold for charity (or crushed if they are shit), would quickly remove the need for traffic wardens at all. Just an armed team with a tow-truck, looking for bad cases of stupid or inconsiderate parking

I was working in the shop the other day and saw the traffic warden outside and said . oh you have issued another parking ticket to the lady across again today( as he'd booked her the day before)The ans was no same ticket but im about to I said look let me see if she ok as unusual not for her to move car within a 24 hr period , let me see if shes ok. So popped across road rang door bell and out she popped, as she opened the door i turned around and traffic warden slapped another ticket on window without even waiting to see if she was ill or dead. i mentioned to her about her car and she said her son is seriously ill and cant leave him, then she spotted the traffic warden and all hell brook loose. The tickets were appealed and dropped but why did he ned to be an arsehole

Exactly , we are helping provide valuable local services and they in turn provide a good service at good value. I’d definitely not want to return to the days of clamping by gangs of thugs washing money from organised crime. Criminalising clamping and de-criminalising parking / introducing PCN were good things

Here’s where we no doubt start to get abuse and a few people will avoid us as a result but Mickey used to be a traffic warden and arming them will make no difference whatsoever (and I don’t think it would be a good idea anyway)

Someone else suggested bodycams and yes, that would prevent the more serious incidents but it still doesn’t prevent the usual abuse they get daily.

I once had a lovely young girl spit at me and scratch away at me because I had the audacity to issue a ticket to her fella for parking in a disabled bay (without a blue badge of course) and had numerous occasions when people would square up to me and say some pretty horrid things (once about my mother, who had died recently but obviously they weren’t to know that).

Yes, some traffic wardens do get off on the “power” and will issue to absolutely anything just for the numbers but as with everyone in life, you always get the idiots. The way I saw it, I was helping traffic move by issuing to vehicles parked in dangerous locations like yellow lines and on zig zags and trying my best to deal with those selfish idiots who don’t care they are taking away disabled bays for those who really need them.

Did it for 18 months and wouldn’t go back because unfortunately their is absolutely no protection and for the really serious issues my own managers and police did sod all! Not worth risking my own safety for a pittance but they don’t deserve the bad rap they get
