Loved it when I had less of a physical job. But I really struggle to do it now with such long hours and hard graft

Makes food prep easy though. Just get home and raid the kitchen

I think that would be the difficult part, adjusting to IF from eating regular meals.

I do it. The 16:8 variety. Tried the 5:2 diet, but I found I was losing muscle mass. Lean Gains by Martin Berkhan also has some interesting ideas.

I did it for quite a while, and I’ll go back to it when I’m allowed.

It’s very effective, and it’s worth reading the Michael Mosley books.

Apparently it is just as effective to do the 800 as the 500 which is what I used to do.

Initially it’s really hard, and I got headaches the first few times, but after that I found it easy.

If you need breakfast then eat breakfast. You could have an egg (boiled), tomato and mushroom, or something like that.

It just takes a while to get your brain round how it works for you, but it’s well worth it, and had a lot of health benefits too.

Do you not feel hungry for the time that you aren't eating?

I do it to reduce inflammation in my body due to working out a lot.

From what I understand, once you get over 18hrs fasting your body transitions to a "super healing" mode.

So I fast from 9pm on a Sunday night until 6am on Tuesday morning. Just need to make sure to drink plenty of electrolytes during the day (Monday) and I chew gum to keep my mind off it.

No working out that day as energy levels too low and takes a while next day to get energy back.

It definitely effects everyone different some do ok some feel horrendous could be lack of electrolytes or dehydration (or both) causing the headaches if you don’t get a lot of potassium. Salt works wonders pre workout when lacking energy from low calories

"The 16:8 variety."

I found this to be the easiest. Like some people on here, I'm not much of an eater in the mornings. So I eat between 10:00 and 18:00 (8 hrs) and I don't eat for 16hrs, most of which I'm sleeping anyway.

I'm on low carbs (which is just sugar), and protein keeps you feeling full for longer.

A 20/25 minute hiit session, just following one on prime. An example would be 3 mins strength, 2 mins cardio, 1 min abs x 2 plus warm up and cool down.

I do HIIT in a fasted state (16:8). It's really not a problem and performance seems normal. In my case, the class is 45 minutes long and I aim to do it twice a week. I used to do it 3 times a week.

I did the Fast800 for 12wks last October and did 16:8 TRE. Lost just under 3st during that time and have done the 5:2 from jan-April and lost another 2st….would still like to lose another stone but in no rush!

Worked well for me and have been much healthier and happier since.

I have been doing it for last two years it's been good. I have know include keto only for 4 weeks then I will go back to normal intermediate fasting.

I would say just start of slow and build up instead of doing it over night.

If you get headaches without the breakfast then have your breakfast then dont eat anything tell evening.

Also remember to eat something healthy when you breaking your fast if you want to see the results.

Have a really good look at what you count with your calories. We are terrible coffee drinkers, easily drinking 5 or more big mugs a day. Even with skimmed milk that's 200kcal of milk that we didn't count. Those calories are sneaky little buggers and creep in everywhere they can.

Good luck.

It's worse than that because calories quoted do not usually equate to what your body "extracts" for the food. I say worse, sometimes it can be better. High fiber natural foods are less calorically available than very processed foods, for example.

I've done it myself some morning's when I've been like a blue arsed fly from the time my eyes opened in the morning until mid afternoon. Not gone without food as I am making things happen rather than waiting for things to happen. Then it's the feast of the Passover. Pass that over to me and I'll eat it if nobody else wants it.

Yes I drink lots of water when fasting , sometimes infused with lemon and ginger.

I found my taste returns, I broke my first ever 5 day fast with a small piece of pitta bread and was amazed that I could really differentiate and taste starch, salt and sugar. Since then my tastes continually improved and I find my body knows what nutrients it needs and when, so I just graize fruit or rampage on meat and fat sometimes rather than stick to traditional meals I let my body eat what it needs.

Another big change was my relationship with food, understanding why I eat - strength, energy , health and to socialise. I no longer eat if I’m bored or dissatisfied, there’s a respect for ingredients , food prep and cooking that I never had before.

Intermittent fasting isn’t a fad diet. It helps you lose weight, but also has lots of proven health benefits, lower blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and reducing blood pressure. It’s worth it for those benefits alone, but you also lose weight and feel better.

Intermittent fasting isn’t a fad diet. It helps you lose weight, but also has lots of proven health benefits, lower blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and reducing blood pressure. It’s worth it for those benefits alone, but you also lose weight and feel better.

Or that kind of thing I said. Not for me. I need to eat regularly or I feel sick or get headaches. Obviously not beneficial to me lol x"

I said that before I did it, I was like that, and I surprised myself .

But it’s not for everyone

I guess so but my BP and cholesterol has always been spot on. I need to lose weight but that’s my own fault and I know how to get it off. I suppose if I was told to for health reasons I’d try it.

"I’m back on my first fast day in a few years, aiming for an 800 day for today, and will aim to get back to 5:2 with 500 cals on the fast days.

Have surprised myself, and managed it ok. "

Can you explain the 800 500 please? I’ve lost 6 stone in 13 months by eating 2 weetabix for breakfast. 4 clementines for lunch and salad with any meat I fancy. Normally comes in at 700 to 900 calories a day. My normal daily calorie burn comes to 3000/4000 though so this could be helping weight loss

There are a couple of books by Michael Mosley.

You might not be eating enough, it’s important to properly fuel your body.

When I do 5:2 I have 500 cals two days a week, and eat normally (but not stupidly) on the other 5. I try and do hiit training or similar on a fast day too, as you burn more.

Thanks I’ll look into those books and the 5:2

Yes it works for me but only because I never eat breakfast. Divide your calories per day by however your feel best suited.

Weight loss is as simple as calories in vs calories out. It’s just calories in vs calories out isn’t that simple.

I've downloaded the fasting tracker app a week ago and had a nightmare trying to get past 6+ hours.

Today is the first time I'm close to 16 hours.

Does anyone have advice on cutting out the urge to snack during the fast?

Just my personal opinion, but not everyone it set up to fast. And I believe if your really struggling, maybe it’s not for you

Most success stories start with how easy they found it to transition into fasting. It’s meant to make your life easier.

I’m not saying quit, just putting my thoughts out there. Intermittent fasting has been found in studies to be no better then other diet models when calories are matched, so don’t feel you need to force something your body isn’t happy with

Calorie deficit/counting is where it's at. Fasting isn't important if you are already eating appropriately.

I swear that every damn time I read this I want to rip my own head off.

It is absolutely not that simple. If it were, I'd be a stick thin parody of myself. Unless there are a lot more calories in coffee than anyone has ever told me.

It also depends on metabolism, on your own digestive system and a multitude of other factors.

For many people it's simple. For a lot of people it's not.

Sorry. Rant over.

They say its good for you but it's all going to depend on how healthy you are to start off with and how physical your job or daily routine is .

There's plenty of YouTube videos on the subject. OP

You’re correct. All calories aren’t equal. Macros are also very important but for the majority of people calories in Vs calories out works.

Sadly the science is pretty set. To suggest calories in vs calories out doesn’t work is to suggest you are somehow immune to starvation, that if you ate nothing you wouldn’t eventually die.

Weight loss is just a controlled version of starvation where we eat slightly less energy than we need to lose body mass.

Eat nothing and you’ll eventually starve and die

Eat 100 dominos a day and you’ll eventually become obese

There’s a middle point between those 2 where your body mass won’t change. Eating just under that will result in weight loss

It’s crazy to think people believe their body has broken fundamental laws of the universe and somehow creates free energy from thin air

I like it. For me, when I have less than a stone I want to lose and everything I did when I had more to lose seemed to stop working, it was the only thing that worked.

"I generally don’t eat till midday but more so from preference like to get up and just have a few cups of tea before work cant be bothered to make or eat breakfast

I need breakfast or I end up with a headache by mid morning."

It did give me headaches at first but once you get past that you feel fine and your appetite reduces.

For anyone wondering about Dr Fung, his book on obesity got just 31% for scientific accuracy and he sells diet teas that boost “2x the results”

Sounds legit

You mean I could do half the work and get better results by drinking that tea?

Yep it helped a lot for me. I’ve lost the routine with it and trying to get it back right now. Feel sharper and healthy when fasting
