Here am I alone in Majorca having the holiday which was postponed from last year. I needed this holiday so much as work has been so tough during the pandemic. Yesterday I received a phone call to say my 14yr old dog had taken unwell and after discussions with family and vets I agreed today to have him put to sleep. I am now heartbroken as was not there at the end when I always promised I would be. My dogs are the one thing in life that keep me going and the one I have lost today was my soulmate. I know dogs don't last forever but I am heartbroken I was not there for him at the end.

From what you have written and the time you had spent with him, he knew that you loved him and cared for him.

He knew it everyday, which was why he was always so pleased to see you.

For an animal to understand a quite human concept, and essentially an alien one to them, demonstrates very clearly that he would have known you would have been there if you could.

All he would have known is that perhaps you were out "hunting for food", and he would have been thinking more about your welfare than his own.

You are the food giver, so please hunt well. Please come back with food. I hope mistress is ok and hunting well.

He would not have been thinking anything more adverse than that.

Oh gosh! Big hugs to you, although know it won't be enough.

I lost my 19 year old man 2 years ago. I was away for the weekend. He'd been rushed into the vets the day before I left, and had to stay in.

My partner and vets had to make the dessision for me, as I was out of contact. I'd given them permission before I left. I loved my old man with all my heart, but I could not have been there in the end. It would of ripped my heart out, looking in his eyes, knowing.... I miss him every day and still talk about him most days.

Your dig will always be with you in your heart.

So sorry for the loss of your canine soulmate, I know how heartbreaking it is. Be kind to yourself, there is nothing you could do about not being there, the vets/nurses will have been with him the whole time. I know when I lost mine last year and I wasn’t there the vet nurse sat with him and cuddled him till the end. You will heal eventually. Sending love & hugs. Xx

I’m so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you right now. I had to make that decision on Monday after my 7 year old pupper went down hill and couldn’t walk. It was heartbreaking and I am devastated. Thankfully I was with him in the end, but it hurts so much more than when a human dies.

That's terrible for you and am sending my condolences.

I have dogs, cats and chickens that I all love dearly. It's always difficult when you lose one. Especially a dog. When I lose one it sometimes hurts so much that it feels like they taken a piece of me away with them. But have realised over the years that the love you can give and receive is infinite.

I appreciate it feels like a burden that you weren't there but that is one thing that you cannot control. And in matters like this life can be so harsh. Sending lots of hugs x

I has to take a family member's dog to the vets for this (they could not go themselves).

I cuddled him as he went, and my god that was hard. I'm not one to cry over anything, but I did have a right bawl after that, geeze.
