"It's not sexist I don't think it's more annoying from some people. " It is sexist. It wasn't in the pub. It wasn't a friend. It was her boss , who over the years has referred to women as birds. He says this in the workplace in front of all. It puts women or 'birds' in a subordinate position to men. It likens them to feathered pets. Words form thoughts and therefore his words and actions give the clear , open honest impression that he does not value women as people or workers and nor does he see them as equals or as capable or as worthy of promotion alongside a man. This type of behaviour has detrimental effects on how women in the workplace view themselves and their promotion opportunities. It is so archaic and I for one am constantly surprised at the stupidity of supposedly intelligent employers who imagine that their brand of banter supersedes any laws put in place to protect people. He's sexist.

I my call my female friends chick but I certainly wouldn't do that to someone I work with particularly if we were not friends outside of the workplace. I Do understand people feel they can't say anything these days but I just think it's all about being appropriate and reading the situation.

"So actually when a man calls you a bird you should take it as the original meaning wealthy, well-born, of good birth. ![]() The origin of words and phrases is fascinating, however, time and context changes. "Some of these words are beautiful: Darling, love angel, sweetheart. Not that I am using them to address women at work or anywhere else. But if a woman addresses a man like this, is inappropriate amd sexist? At work or elsewhere? I have been called love or darling by women I do not know and does not really bother me. And expressions such as ok love? You are an angel, you are a sweetheart are not that uncommon. " The problem is some people believe that because *they* don't mind or even like something everyone else *must* have the same opinion. We are all different, have different life experiences and different expectations. I've not read the story nor do I particularly care to, the fact that a judge (who has access to far more info than the newspapers print) has decided this was sexist is more than enough for me. Sexism, like racism, can often be hard to prove or even demonstrate. For example how do you prove that you're boss doesn't consider you as capable as your colleague simply because of your sex? The language he/she uses may be the only objective action that can be picked to demonstrate months/years of unequal treatment. Articles like this are often used to inflame people who are incapable of thinking past the headline. It doesn't mean that asking your best mate "you ok bird?" is somehow illegal or going to get you fined. What it does mean is that the language we use can affect how we make others feel and invariably reflects our biases. If the bias it reflects is sexist towards a member of our staff we can (rightly) expect to be called out. Mr

"All those saying ' Oh I don't mind' ...... ? So what ? It wasn't a personal poll. I don't jump down the throat of anyone male or female who calls me 'luv, babe, doll, hen , or whatever term they use to pacify or form a public relationship .... but in work ? i'd walk over hot coals to let them know they can't treat me or other women in their employ that way. If you had rights let say over being paid the correct amount and your boss paid you less because she thought she knew best ........ would you say ..... Oh I don't mind ? Bins not emptied ? Oh I don't mind. Kids not taught properly ? Oh I don't mind. No doctors to treat you ? Oh I don't mind ... Shop closes early? Oh I don't mind. Police playing cards n having a drink so too busy to help you ..... Oh I don't mind. It is LAW..... that women are treated with the same respect as men in the workplace and unless your boss calls men employees birds....... you should mind. " Exactly! I often wonder if the reason people put things like "Oh i don't mind" is it because they don't want to be seen as a problem.

"I worked in a factory when one of our engineers called a woman line worker “love” once. She had him in the office for sexism. He was nearly sacked. Solution? The us engineers stopped all conversation with the women, all the centuries old banter, flirting and fun stopped. It became a draconian place to work. Miserable to say the least. In the end little miss snowflake was sent to Coventry by her female workers. She left and the cheery happy ways returned. "Indeed I might also add the fact the male apprentice was stripped in the warehouse by 8 women on this 18th birthday and it was classed as “ light hearted fun” by management. Go figure. " Thats not acceptable either and sounds like a very unsafe working environment!

"It's such a shame that people take offense. A lot of it is banter, especially here up North. Some people can find offence in anything these days. Personally it takes a hell of a lot for me to be offended, life is too short to be offended by this that and the other. I'm assuming you didn't read the link because this wasn't just banter, this was her boss constantly demeaning her!" No I didn't read the link, but I have worked in a job where if I'd been called a bird or similar I would of taken that as a compliment compared to the many other names I was called on a daily basis by my boss and colleagues. In my own opinion, it's often to do with the context in which things are said rather than what is said.

So as a previous poster has said women are as bad as the men. Here’s an example of a Monday morning scenario. Engineer walks into a broken down line. 30 women on the line. Engineer gets his tools out and starts a repair on a machine. Conversation goes “ hey ( to the engineer ) what were you up to at the weekend? “ other “ lady” were you shagging? Other “ lady” did you give it her up the arse? Other “lady” says or where you fucking ya brother instead? I kid you not. It’s the real real real world in some factories across the uk. Let’s not say banter is right or wrong, but it happens, and there is no denying it happens.

It's not banter if the other person doesn't like it. Your colleague clearly didn't like it yet you and your workmates felt the need to ridicule her and refuse to talk to her and that is disgusting. Its only banter if all parties are enjoying it, if not it is called bullying.

There was no intention to ridicule and there was no further communication. As I have said when some people are offended by anything the best way is no communication for fear of retribution and subsequent job loss. Is calling someone “ love” really bullying. I agree constant sexual banter to someone who does not like it IS a form of bullying and offensive and deserves discipline but in my experience grown adults tend to have enough common sense to know when they have said the wrong thing to the wrong person.

Or does it sound like petulant sulking like a small child would do? Nope. It stops you getting the sack from saying the wrong thing to anyone who chooses to be offended by anything you may say. i get it mate some workplaces have a buzz n banter bit more industrial shall we say the birds in my place give as good as they get trust me haha when someone comes in that dont fit and demands it all stops it fucks everyone up not everyone understands partic in offices but the birds are as bad as the blokes like with you the buzz returned when she went cos the birds missed it as much as the blokes its how lots of industrial workplaces work ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In my experience women tended to start it, for obvious reasons.

He may have called her ‘love’ once but there was a whole lot of inappropriate language going on all around her. You said so, and that it started up again after she left. So maybe if there was a general atmosphere of respect, the occasional ‘love’ wouldn’t matter

Maybe you didn't get told the whole story of when she went to complain

"I have to say following on from the factory workplace comments. My husband is an engineer and worked in different factories and some of the things females say and do to him shocks me. It's stuff I have never ever seen in an office environment. " I have to agree Monday morning phone calls of norty nora the supervisor were gems, my flange is wet and leaking on number 3, and the knob has fell off one of the tits, and you have a bent shaft on the knobler and how's it hanging.

"Ladies/gentlemen - formal Women/men - neutral Birds/blokes - informal I use all 6 of these terms depending on the circumstances. In the workplace as is the case here, I wouldn't dare call a woman a bird nor a man a bloke. They are very informal terms and certainly not professional. However, I don't see the harm in using any of them. They just have appropriate or rather, inappropriate uses... Does this make me sexist then for using them? ![]() Absolutely not. Like you said it's all about the setting and the context and also about the relationship. I call my female friends chick but only the ones I know like it and I certainly wouldnt call a female colleague that.

The above means you know how to behave appropriately in the workplace. I can call my friends all sorts (and they call me all sorts) but that's because we are interacting on a totally different level to the workplace. I work with my husband and a friend of mine has recently started working in my department. I speak to Mr KC VERY differently at home than at work ![]()
