The greatest song, ever

Manchester (he/him)

I know that this is tough topic, choosing one song arbitrarily is extremely hard, especially as it can often change according to mood, sentiment, context, wind speed, weather and what socks you’re wearing.

In terms of your specific feelings at this moment and giving your own choice of criteria, what in your opinion is the greatest song or songs ever?

My favourite song? Brendan Shine, the Irish balladier singing, "Do you want your old lobby washed down?" I sing it to my mum most mornings as I'm doing her personal care.

Years ago in Ireland when people couldn't pay their rent they would offer to do jobs instead, hence, "Do you want your old lobby washed down?" But now in modern times the expression takes on another meaning! No doubt you've guessed it.

Brendan caused a bit a few red faces on an Irish television show called, "The late show " as he told the story of when his mate phoned him up to say that as The Pope was leaving Shannon airport he was being played all the way to his plane to his song, "Do you want your old lobby washed down." And Brendan told the interviewer that seeing as The Pope didn't understand much English anyway, he'd hardly know what the message was that was being sent across anyway. So that's my favourite song, "Do you want your old lobby a wash down?"

I couldn’t possibly comment on what I think the best song is as there’s so many I love from various different artists and bands. However If I am to pick a singer with a talent like no other I would have to go with Freddie Mercury, his is phenomenal. (In my opinion). Although I will have to add Roy Orbinson to that as well as Prince. Bohemian Rhapsody. Only the Lonely and Kiss. 3 of the greatest songs sung by these men

For me I'd go for

Elvis-Jailhouse Rock.

He just nails this although the version that sold millions was spliced together from 2 takes it was killing his throat making it.

Prince - Last Heart.

I first heard this on a bootleg in the 80's and thought this is the most intricate funk I've ever heard. The bass just kills me.

Finally

Van Halen - Why can't this be love.

80's rock with synths. So catchy wish I saw it live at the time.
