Do You Take Your Own Advice ?

I see lots of great advice on Forum, practical and emotional, so there are some wise heads here.

But do you always follow the good advice you give to others ?

Or is it easier to sort out other peoples problems than your own ?

Yup, I wouldn't give advice to someone if I wouldn't follow it myself.

Me too, and that's been my experience with most people. It's so much harder to be objective about ourselves, I think.

Yes definitely.

My advice normally comes from what I should’ve or could’ve done differently and helps me reflect on things that have happened in life, but totally agree about the objectivity

My advice usually revolves around mental health and taking time out for self care. I try as much as possible to cater for myself when I need it but sometimes it's not always feasible! Walking is my medicine but unfortunately I don't have the time or childcare to get out every day which is frustrating.

Very good point. Sometimes it's just practical issues rather than lack of will which stop us.

On a mooch

Helping others is easier than dealing with yourself, a distraction from your own things.

As with all advice given or received, unless the individual is ready to make that change it is just words, only the individual can take the step forward.

I have noticed that people who go out of their way to advise others often have unresolved issues of their own.

I find it helps to write down the self-advice rather than keep it all upstairs. Gives some distance maybe.

The best advice I gave myself was tomorrow is not guaranteed and I'm making the rest of my life the best of my life.really helped me get out of a dark place.depression and anxiety.now,I've stopped worrying, life's too short, and yeah I'm a great listener, there's a world of difference between hearing and listening.

Hearing and listening...important distinction. Very pleased you've found a better place for yourself.

Helping others has always been much easier for me. Too easy in fact which is why I tend to avoid giving advice anymore or carrying the weight of other people's problems.

That's exactly what I've done all my life and as a direct result haven't lived my own life.

I often advised people to be a little more selfish and do things for themselves but I could never do it myself until a few years ago.

It's not in my nature to turn my back on others so it is always a conscious decision not to not offer advice.

It almost broke me and I advise myself now to focus more on me.

I dont really, no. Were would be the fun in that. It's easy to know what to do, not so easy to do it. Which is why I am very sympathetic, I realise how impossible some things can be even when it shouldn't be so of we just listen to the words we say rather than consider putting them into practise.

It's definitely a paradox, advising people to be more selfish when the selfish (or self-first) thing would be to not give advice.
