In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

I am having a sort out. Because apparently I'm a pack rat and I don't need clothes in all sizes from 14 to 34.

I picked up a pair of size 22 jeans that looked weirdly small. They are EXACTLY the same size as a pair of size 16. And then a second one.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. That's 3 alleged sizes different.

So I stopped looking at tags and have tried them all on. I'm down to 3 pairs that both fit and I like. And none of them are the same size.

Is it any wonder so many women are screwed up about their bodies when clothing manufacturers are working against us even

Ahhhh yep! Ive got a wardrobe full of clothes ranging from size 8 to 16 and all fit perfectly! Dont get me started on shoes either... currently wear 4 different sizes too!

Yep, it's annoying OP. Add in big boobs and a smaller waist and my clothes size varies anything from a 16 to a 22 and even then not everything fits perfectly, let alone from different brands.

I think sizing consistency would be great, do away with vanity sizing and place less emphasis on dress size and more on how you feel in yourself.

Sales is your best friend there oder something cheap on sale like a dress that was ment to be £30-£40

For like £10 on sale oder it in 3 sizes you have paid full price for it but also learned what size to oder from that shop so next time you know what size to oder that’s what I do when ordering form new places

I find it an absolute nightmare too! I’m a size 8, and have clothes that all fit the same from various shops ranging from 6-16. Trouser length is also an issue as a short arse, a short leg fits perfectly in one shop, then the next it’s either way to short or gets thrown into the sewing machine to adjust three inches of excess! Not great when you can’t stand shopping

Don't worry men's sizing ain't standard across the board either. I've got more unworn clothes in my wardrobe that I've bought online than I have worn stuff. There are probably only 2 or 3 shops I can buy from and trust their sizing.

I gave up looking at labels years ago. I found 2 items in the same shop, same size, a good 2 inches different in size.

Now I just take a tape measure or try stuff on. And cut the labels out.

This seems to be the case for most women I know! Three sizes across. At least. I like shops which allow you to leave feedback on the fit too. And one with more realistic models.

It may have been a solution before Covid. But nowadays, some shops still don't allow customers to try before you buy. Also, if you're avoiding going to the shops in person and only shopping online, it's a pain, having to pay for, let's say, 3 pairs of jeans in 3different sizes because the clothing industry cannot agree on standard measurements. And then having to return the ones that don't fit, wait for refund etc.

Also, as the original poster mentioned, it can have devastating effect on girls and women body image.

I ha e a hige difficulty in not only the sizing but also the length. Shopping for trousers on some "taller ladies" sites are ridiculous as they come up like ankle geazers, whereas others i have to take up, and im nearly 6ft2!

And dont go there with Chinese sizing!! Bane of my life and online shopping.

Now there is the issue if you don't actually go shopping, I hated shopping even before Covid and mostly bought on line so end up sending a load of stuff back because not all sizes are the same as the OP says.

It used to be that you could pick a shop and know what size you would need to buy in that shop but even that has changed now.

"I find it an absolute nightmare too! I’m a size 8, and have clothes that all fit the same from various shops ranging from 6-16. Trouser length is also an issue as a short arse, a short leg fits perfectly in one shop, then the next it’s either way to short or gets thrown into the sewing machine to adjust three inches of excess! Not great when you can’t stand shopping

I hear that!! I'm a pack rat because I hate shopping. So 10 "different" sizes of clothes being hoarded means I don't need to shop.

And I feel your pain on leg length as well, but from the other end. 34" of leg is not an easy one to find....

"Don't worry men's sizing ain't standard across the board either. I've got more unworn clothes in my wardrobe that I've bought online than I have worn stuff. There are probably only 2 or 3 shops I can buy from and trust their sizing."

That surprises me... I always assumed that mens clothes were done more measurementy

Yep, I hear you. It's very upsetting when you know your a 14 and your trying on 20 ect. Dosn't encourge ladies to buy items. I for one, end up leaving with out buying, feeling fat and frumpy.

Being a seamstress I understand mesurements with a tape measure. Dress sizes used to be standard against a tape measure. Not anymore it seems.

Exactly that with the boobs! What makes me laugh is when they fit, but the cut of the fabric is such that the band that's meant to go under absolutely has to be half way up the boob or there is no coverage at all!

Years ago there were standard recognised sizes and clothes were checked that they complied before they went to the shops. Generally I think men’s clothes seem to stick to the standard but women’s don’t at all - and don’t get me started on clothes made in China. I hate clothes shopping because of the lack of consistency- nothing so disheartening when you have worked hard to lose weight to find you can’t get a leg or arm into clothes.

"I gave up looking at labels years ago. I found 2 items in the same shop, same size, a good 2 inches different in size.

Now I just take a tape measure or try stuff on. And cut the labels out.

I haven't actually shopped for anything except stretchy everyday tops, leggings and cardigans in years

And leggings..... bought 3 pairs from the same place, all fit differently!

Hint hint some off me te shirt dress aren’t dress but just oversized te shirts in

And there was me claiming to be an over size 8

That can work if you want a te shirt dres to be tight fitting oversized t shirt and size down that why you get the length but it’s tight fitting instead off ment to be baggy looking

Also if you want a micro skirt or micro dress

Oder it in Pettie varied the length is made for people 5ft 3 and under so going to look way shorter on someone over that size I give all my ticks away lol

I tend to wear full length skirts and dresses. Mostly I’m into dungarees and play suits in the summer though.

This drives me potty. I have clothes between a 10 and a 16 that all fit but other stuff that doesn't. I bought a pair of jeans a few weeks ago, same size and style as the pair I was wearing but they are smaller than my old ones

It really doesn't help body confidence when I knew I'd lost weight too.

Drives me nuts! I can be anything from a 10 to a 14 depending on the shop! I’m also more shapely on the bottom half and can never find trousers that fit both my thighs/ass and waist unless I go to a tailor and have them made!

I find more expensive clothing worse as it’s like the cater for the tall and slim, and don’t get me started on Zara trousers think there’s catering for folk on stilts!

It sure is incredibly annoying.

Not just for women either, I can't trust any size labels to be right for myself, my sons or my Husband.

I avoid fitted waist bands and go for elasticated ones where ever possible, we are all on the curvy side and enjoy our meals, so better to be safe than sorry lol.

Even sock bands can be too tight so I order the big foot styles for extra room and comfort, or the over knee variety as they tend to come up larger.

The perils of sending for things that say one size fits all is well known, it certainly doesn't.

And one manufacturers XL is anothers' medium, and some other sweatshop is turning out "small" things which fit you me and the rest of the world...

No wonder us consumers are confused.

OP, I feel your pain and agree with your rant whole-heartedly.

I find that their sizes are cray as well. I bought some size ten slinky leggings from PLT, my size 16 daughter wears them. Bought her some joggers from there, the size 16’s fall down. My mum works in a charity shop so they benefit from having clothing for a younger age range, but she said that the joggers are closer to a 20/22.

Boohoo is the same. My wardrobe, because of these ranges are from an 8-12. But from the goth shops and sometimes have to size up, have clothing ranging in sizes from them too.

It’s so annoying, and can be demoralising at times xz

So why don't some 32" trousers fit? Some are so big I can't walk without them falling around my ankles, others I struggle to do up.

BUT 32" IS A MEASUREMENT! It should always be the same.

It wouldn't be acceptable if your 32" TV was only 30", or a 6' bloke turned to be only 5'6", would it!

Ahhh now i thought you may say that. So a store 'purchase team' will visit various designers in the uk choosing clothing for the following season. Now a design warehouse is a hub for multiple shops, so for instance 'top shop' will buy jeans from 4-5 different suppliers, 3 of those suppliers jeans could be made in 'cambodia' 2 suppliers could use turkey.. all with 'topshop' labels. The cambodia made jeans could be slimmer fit than the turkey made.

Its also down to the fabrics used ect.

Primark for instance use the cheapest fabrics going for their clothing which typically has a 5 wash life cycle and are made in Bangladesh, Bangladesh fitting clothing is typically true to size but fabrics are poir quality.

Many designer brands are manufactured in turkey, the materials are good quality... typically the best quality, then italian dyes are used (the best quality) and theyre very true to size.

Yep. When Mr N was buying a suit recently the variance within sizes was astonishing. Oddly some of the more expensive ones came up smaller by a long way

Maybe best to avoid some of the online places if you want to avoid returns, bring back the high street I say

I loathe bra shopping the most, as even the same brand can't stick to the same body contours... Then of course black always measures smaller, so you can't just buy two different colours, knowing one fits you.

If the companies are more honest, they'd get more customer confident sales and less returns - I don't get the logic.

I'm surprised the EU didn't fix this, in their regulating of everything. We can't weigh stuff in lbs or sell bent bananas yet women's clothing is a free for all.

I'll get off my platform now and make a cuppa, while I debate if my XL item is going to be big enough.

I've found that designer brands tend to be more consistent in their sizing, as well as being generally cut to better suit an hourglass figure...the (now sadly departed with the loss of Debenhams) J by Jasper Conran range I didn't even have to try on, the same size fitted me in every item I ever bought. Primark is just pot luck, I'll only ever buy stretchy t-shirts from there, and the sizing even on those isn't consistent.

My biggest bugbear isn't so much the sizing, I couldn't care less what the label says if it fits me, it's the fact that it's very hard to find any clothes to properly fit an hourglass figure, especially dresses and trousers...it's like they think all women are shaped like a flat chested Humpty Dumpty with no waist and slim legs

Yep, it's part of the reason I've never worn jeans since I was a young teenager - my waist is smaller than my arse dictates it should be. My boobs mean I'm stuck wearing stretchy fabric dresses if I don't want to look like I'm 14 months pregnant (there's only so much a belt can do). You can get items tailored but that soon mounts up.
